I spent a year in Polygon from July 2022 as Head of Engineering, and I can vouch that this has been in the works since 2022.
We had three phases to make Polygon Mainnet (MATIC) ultra robust
1. Reduce Reorgs (a variety of initiatives including sprint size reduction)
2. Move
Polygon with the Aggregation layer will redefine web3 architecture. This is one of the biggest leaps in this domain. All this is supported by world class ZK technology - Do you know that the ZK tech and some of the pillars of ZK were built by the amazing minds @ Polygon?
1/ Polygon Mainnet had a large 157 block reorg few weeks ago (at Block# 39599624)
This is a true low probability event, however accentuated by the lower sprint length introduced as part of Jan 17 HF.
A top level overview of the reorg can be found here:
1/ Breakdown on the 157 block reorg that occurred earlier in the year on Polygon PoS.
In this thread, we'll explore what caused the reorg and the proposed solutions in the works...
This thread definitely did not get the attention it deserved 🤓
First big update for 2023 for
#MATIC
@0xPolygon
mainnet happening on Jan 17th - Countdown to the hardfork:
Big improvements to the chain and App / Dev Experience! More improvements coming!
1/ We are proposing two important changes in
@0xPolygon
mainnet (
#MATIC
)
Proposal
#1
: A proposal to reduce re-orgs - Reorgs are a challenge for App developers who have to wait for N number of blocks before a transaction can be considered final
Incredibly happy to announce that

I still haven't deleted my parents' contacts and I used make calls from their SIM sometimes. Some strange way of dealing with grief (I lost both of them back to back). I'll probably never be able to delete their contacts.
I used to call my mom twice a day (on my way to office
For several years after Amma's demise, I kept recharging her phone, I would place it in another room, call, and then go and take the phone and answer it myself, and just speak, narrating the day's events. It was a way of comforting myself. An attempt to overcome my grief.

Proposal
#1
: A proposal to reduce re-orgs - Reorgs are a challenge for App developers who have to wait for N number of blocks before a transaction can be considered final
A quick update on what I am doing next, after an incredible ride @ Polygon Labs. It was amazing to work with a legends like
@jdkanani
,
@anuragarjun
and
@sandeepnailwal
at such close quarters.
Root aims to fundamentally change how fintech platforms are built. I am very
Moving from MATIC to POL is not just a name change - It is a complete reinventing web3 architecture in terms of appchains, validator architecture, restaking and so much more. This version of web3 is going to be more interesting and effective!
I am very excited for this!
#MATIC
It is my pleasure to report that POL contracts are live on Ethereum mainnet! 🤩💫
The launch of POL is a major milestone on the Polygon 2.0 roadmap, but it’s only the beginning. It paves the way for a number of upgrades, including launching a new staking layer to power Polygon
I might be a little biased here 🤪 - But
#Polygon
PoS Chain rocks. One of those things that just works even at crazy scale. Love it 🥰
With some significant improvement launched recently , this is deep reorg proof and has deterministic finality 🩷
#MATIC
3/ In Short - MATIC mainnet used to sync 64 blocks from Heimdall which was same as SprintLength. However, Sprint Length was reduced in the recent HF reducing it to 16.
Now the proposal is to sync 128 blocks for State Sync Confirmation.
4/ This should eliminate / significantly reduce probability of this event.
We are also soon introducing faster finality using Milestones in late Q2 - This should also (almost) eliminate this issue - You can read more about that here:
N/ We are also working on some very very exciting Network upgrades to make
@0xPolygon
even more awesome :)
Will keep you all posted - Any feedback / suggestions are welcome!
Welcome to the Polygon ecosystem, Fox Corporation!

1/ Random thoughts on hardware acceleration
In tech, mature components (that don't change that much) can be implemented in hardware and things that are evolving in software / firmware
Hardware execution can be deterministic and fast, but its logic cannot change
N/ We are also waiting on votes from our Validator partners on this - If you are one, please vote and share your thoughts as we steer the

mainnet to become even more robust!
Very well put! While optimistic rollups can provide a chain level guarantee with the cost of execution of blocks, it can't be done for multichain scenario unless we run nodes for all chains.
In ZK rollups, even in multichain scenario, the zk proof is sufficient (no need to
I've seen some rough proposals that enable interoperability in optimistic rollups with latency < the challenge period. They all suffer from an important flaw.
For context, ORs like to claim that transactions on an OR are finalized as soon as they're posted to L1. There's no need
Polygon 2.0 is not just an (exciting) vision anymore!
The 1st phase of implementation officially starts today, with the first set of PIPs (Polygon Improvement Proposals) submitted for community review! 🤗
Get involved; only together we can build the Value Layer of the Internet!
When you are truly in a rut, instead of going on a negative spiral, the best way to break out is to 'Count your blessings' - Just being grateful for what you have instead of 'how it could have been'.
Been through *multiple* lean moments of late, and this *truly* helps
Contrary to the current rhetoric by investors of Monolithic L1s, once zk proofs solve cross chain composability, every Dapp, Defi protocol or any other kind of trustless app will have its own chain.

team - This was the reason I joined the team - I am loving every moment here and super proud of the vision we are going behind & the fire power we have to reach there
2/ Currently, when a validator gets a slot to propose blocks, they retain the slot for 64 blocks (approx 2 seconds per block, and hence for about 2 mins)
Our proposal involves reducing the sprint length to 16 blocks. This reduces the frequency and depth of the reorgs

I have never coded in pair nor will ever do it.
I see programming as a creative pursuit.
Best work happens in flow when one is alone and focused. I don't think pair programming will even let one Dev get into flow
Pair programming is notoriously absent from so many tech companies that otherwise are known for their high engineering bar IME. And I’m wondering why this is.
Impostor syndrome? Focus on individual impact? Code reviews seen as replacing these? “Move fast” mindset?
