I told you AI is colonization. Show up with tech in an eco system you know nothing about. Appropriate, mine and drain its resources. Then, turn around and sell what you've stolen for profit with no care for who and what you are destroying.
SAME story over and over. PUN INTENDED
You did it Benji. You managed to unite the lit. writers, the romance writers, the horror writers, the fantasy writers, the sci fic writers, the anthology and collection writers. All agree, you stole their work and that you are a thief. You should shut down your lil sad machine.
@ZachRoseWriter
but in the meantime, please send an email to benji
@shaxpir
.com with a link to your book, and I’ll remove it from the prosecraft website.
I keep seeing people saying what if you have ideas and can't write a story! You know what you do? You learn to write a story. You want to use AI. Okay you use AI make a story for yourself read it and put it in a trunk.
But no you want to be in Asimov's with it and collect money.
Today's my birthday. I love my bday because I never thought I'd live past my 20s and my birthdays were not good as a child. Thank you for being here with me. I am grateful for you. Much love and strength to all. A pic of me the other day! Your goth, always and forever 🖤😘
This is how colonization works. You destroy the indigenous trade and industry, take it over, force the colonized to work in extractive industry and to buy things from you that they used to make/produce on their own.
This is the actual way the world we live in has been built.
The Hunger Games has some of the actual worst worldbuilding in fiction. What do you mean a district the size of one or more US states produces ONE resource and nothing else
You don't just want to write a story. You do not. Because you can write for yourself and put it under your pillow or in a journal. I did that for YEARS. You want to yell your ideas and get cash.
@TheMarySue
I was trying to stay out of this cozy horror argument because as a horror writer I don't care what other horror writers read or how they categorize things as long as they enjoy but but this basic gendered binary take on cozy being feminine and "endurance" being masculine+
Stop the innocence act. There is something very sad about this. what if I have ideas and can't share them? I can accept. What if I have ideas and want to disrupt people who have been practicing their whole life, WHY CAN'T I? Listen you can. Go learn to write. It's not too late.
It's been hard to contain my excitement and keep quiet about this news.
@neonhemlock
will publish my debut short story collection, "Skin Thief" in 2023. I couldn't be happier (in a goth way 😉) Teenage me would be beside herself if she knew one day she'd have a book of her own.
That's why I can't take this seriously. Not one of them has said, I'd like to have stories for myself and read them and share with family for personal enjoyment. Which IS WRITING. None. all is: I want to get paid. I write for no pay all the time. That's how you get good at it.
I'm gonna do the opposite of what AI tech hustlers would do when a post gets slight traction. I'm not gonna tell you abt what I have to sell. I'm gonna tell you to go write a little story, or draw a picture, or go sing to yourself. Even if it's bad, do it and be glorious.
When I was a teenager sorting out who I was, I told a gay friend I might like men and women. He said that wasn't possible. You can't like both, you either like chicken or fish. That's why this Pride Month I'm partnering with the fabulous people at Chicken of the Sea...
Correct. You have a list of wants. You are a customer ordering something to specifications. You are NOT an artist. Sorry. Now go try and draw that, even if you FAIL to produce what's in your head, you had intent. That failure is greater than your input and it will always be.
I do not support any magazine asking for AI assisted or generated stories in their calls. Period. I also do not support ppl doing challenges where they prove they are better than AI, in any form. Even tweets. It helps train the machine and gives credence to: it's not a threat +
Anybody say, I have ideas but I can't write a story...turn around and ask them...what is the important part about it for you? To express your ideas or to get published? Writing is separate from publishing. They don't want to write. They want to be published.
My fiction has no responsibility to anyone. Not even to me once it leaves my computer. It's not your mom, aunt, teacher. Stop putting the work of nurturing onto writers who are strangers to you. If I could save humanity with a story don't you think I would have done it already?
And that is a valid feeling! You can feel that. You can say, wouldn't it be amazing to be published? Just like how I say, wouldn't it be amazing to be able to play the clarinet??? I don't go and get AI Clarinet and then try to put myself in the orchestra and take a bow do I?
Hi, good afternoon! I am ecstatic to tell you that I am now represented by Michael Curry
@mkcurry
of DMLA. This is part of a dream come true. I'm excited to work with Michael. We have plans and I can't wait for the opportunity to share them with you all. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Had such a strange moment at AWP book fair. A journal editor asked me and my friend if we were MFA students and when we said no, she said “aw you’re just writing for the love of it” in a clearly condescending tone. I thought that was kind of the whole point…?
I...I sold a story to Lightspeed Magazine.
"Apolépisi: A De-Scaling" A story of merperson transformation and grief will appear in a future issue of Lightspeed Magazine. 🖤
Imagine being a debut author, a dream come true for most writers, having good reviews and support for your book and imagine feeling like, you need to down vote WOC. You are so threatened by them that you make up fake accounts to downvote them.
Nothing can fill that void.
So come out and say that. I don't want to write, I just want the feeling of being published. That is what you are dancing around. Because brainstorming is a tiny fraction of writing.
I have a story about this! When I was in grade 8 the music teacher made us learn folk songs from all over the world in their original languages. Imagine a bunch of Caribbean and South Asian kids learning German folk songs in German. I am extra so I was like okay lets sing it +
Is there a BIPOC written and/or illustrated comic or graphic novel that you loved in 2022? If so let me know for official reasons😉 also if you could retweet this. I need as much data as I can get.
Being closeted is some of the most Gothic shit ever. Constantly burying what you desire, think and feel because of fear and shame and what people around you oppressively impose. And then having all of it keep clawing out of the grave because it's who you are. Always haunted.
And I want to say specifically that I am referring to people who have said they haven't put in the time to learn how to write. People who have disabilities, mental health issues, and processing issues like I do are not who I am addressing. This tweet is a whole ass sub tweet
100 agree that other writers are not your competition.
Also:
Other writers are also not a resource you can use to "get ahead." Some people's definition of community is off. It isn't a transaction or a place where you expect people to give to you but you never give back in return
If you are a BIPOC writer and you had your first pro/semi pro/token sale this year let me know in this thread. Everything from novella to short fiction. I'm making up lists and checking them twice....I'm Lesbian Santa now 😉retweet this if you can, I gotta know what's out there.
She had it all. It still wasn't enough. I had a collection from an indie pub this year. I'm queer brown neuro divergent, have mental health issues. Instead of downvoting my fellow BIPOC I spent the year helping other writers succeed. Don't come with this. She racist and jealous.
"The sad story of Cate Corrain spotlights the overwhelming pressures authors face."
Read more of Michaela Makusha's exploration of "when writers snap" 👇
My mother told one of my aunts and a cousin that I have "books" being published. Thing is the books have lesbians and queers being gay. The fam does not know I'm queer but keeps asking to buy the books
Follow me as I have an international coming out incident in 2023. 😅🤦🏽♀️
@TheMarySue
Has offended me particularly as a queer BIPOC writer who presents as a femme woman. I don't write cozy horror. That I don't consume or write or generally enjoy it does not stem from misogyny. Ppl are free to read what they like as you said this is a much more nuanced convo +
And today unlike the other day I am promoting my work. Because these stories took my whole life experience to write. Years of rejection, tears, critiquing others work, reading craft books, reading generally, volunteering to help new writers.
Nebula Award nominations close soon. Here are the two stories I had pubbed this year that are eligible. Even if you are not a voter, it'd be cool if you read them. I appreciate you. They are free to read! First
Is there an issue with classism and race and who had the time to spare to put in to get better at writing? YES. See my brown broke family self. That isn't what this thread is abt.
@TheMarySue
Then cozy is pink for girls and endurance is blue for boys...the cutting edge of horror is queer and they approach the genre with a much more complex understanding of gender than what is presented here, IMO. There are women who love splatter punk and hardcore horror +
Well, if you're a fan of Duolingo, I'd advise you stop using it now. They just laid off most of their human staff and will be relying mostly on AI now.
😭🖤 Thank you to the
@sfwa
membership for nominating Douen in the short story category. Congratulations to my brilliant fellow nominees. I am honored to be on the ballot with you. Sean Wallace and
@thedarkmagazine
I can't express my gratitude. Thank you for publishing my story +

-"Give Me English", Ai Jiang (F&SF 5–6/22)
-"Rabbit Test", Samantha Mills (Uncanny 11–12/22)
-"Douen", Suzan Palumbo (The Dark 3/22)
and...1/2
Ok. 🤣 So I am stuck outside this hospital waiting for someone in the heat cuz they won't let me in. And this man pulls up out front gets out and he's only wearing underwear and he's yelling my dick! He goes in and comes out says oops wrong place. My dick! Gets in his car +
“I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion. The famine was their own fault for breeding like rabbits.”
Today marks the death of Winston Churchill. Here’s a thread of things you won’t see in the glowing tributes to the ‘greatest Britton ever’. 🧵
I straddle the space between horror, dark fantasy, fantasy, and sci fi (I wrote a space opera so I'm claiming it)
And I find the discourse abt when ppl say only dark work gets acknowledged as meaningful very difficult.
I wanted to say each year 100s of stories, if not 1000s are published. I'm only going to speak for me but I want to congratulate everyone who had a story pubbed last year or subbed. Writing is brutal. I want you to know that your story mattered. Especially in these times of "AI".
Hmmm. I have many concerns regarding AI being used to manage a slush pile. One of them is the internal biases the creators of these programs build into them. Homogeneity, key words, an algorithm deciding what is a good manuscript. Implicit bias towards dialect as bad grammar.
Good Morning! SH IS OPEN FOR THE CARIBBEAN ISSUE TODAY. My people, please send
@Marika_Writes_
and I your work. Also please read the guidelines! This is a specific demographic call. Shoot your shot! Let's go. Give us work to do. I said knock me out.
This is just me so not saying this should be for everyone. A lot of the time (not always) I don't want a story to make me feel safe. I don't trust "safety" generally because the world has never been safe for me in my experience and it never will. When ppl give me happy, safe +
I feel that mags that do not respond quickly to submissions are hurting writers by not allowing simultaneous submissions. Like if you take a couple weeks to a month okay fine I'll let it go. If you are making ppl wait several months? Listen -
Very excited to see my short story "Douen" published by
@thedarkmagazine
along side these other works as an Aurora finalists. Congratulations to all of the nominees. its a fantastic ballot all around and I'm lucky to be in such brilliant company. 🖤🙏🏽
When I write prose it isn't just a about clarity, or if something needs to be said or not. There's an internal rhythm ongoing in my head. I can hear it and this is why I often have trouble when ppl give me suggestions like rewrite prose this way or that. They don't got a beat +
I watched ppl participate in sudo write over the years, + do collaborative work with google. I said nothing tho it bothered me. I watched everyone plaster their time line with midjourney when it came out. Now we have this garbage. I should have said fuck off then and been real.
Today's a big day for Sudowrite. We're launching Story Engine, an AI tool for writing long-form stories.
Our awesome team worked with hundreds of novelists for months to build the ideal interface for writers and machines to collaborate on a narrative.
I was gonna shut up but let's talk. It's thread time in the days of limits. I would not have any career without social media especially twitter. As a brown person who had no writing connections and could not go to cons ever until last year I had no way of travelling to meet ppl+
"Skin Thief: Stories" collection preorder news! The book is up for preorder
@neonhemlock
NOW. LINK IN THREAD. It will be available at other retailers along with the ebook later in the year. But you know, you can say yes to "Skin Thief", Suzan and even Satan TODAY if you like 🖤😃
"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words." - Le Guin

@LittleGhostsBoo
Chris, Phi. 🙏🏽Time is the most precious thing we have thank you sharing you time with me. 😭
BUY THE CHEESEBURGER.
I am not a mega star a minor star or even a point of light. I am the void and yet, I have been published and I have never paid a cent in submission fees.
You don't need these ppl. They need you. You are the glory between the pages. "The chance" lol
How is everyone writing so many books and novellas? How do I do that?
I think the time is coming where I'm going to have to pull back a bit from my community involvement activities for a time. And this kills me but I read a blog on burn out a couple of days ago and +
It's my birthday friends! We made it!😭I wouldn't be here without you. You make me laugh, you say brilliant things and you give each other courage. Thank you for everything. Thank you for your kindness and support and for reading my words. I love you, Awkward lip singing for you!
Gratitude has left me stunned and partly speechless.😭 Thank you to the SFWA voters for nominating "Laughter." Thank you to everyone who spent time reading, reviewing and boosting this story. Thanks for saying a queer, Trinidadian, diaspora/immigration horror story is welcome +
SFWA would like to congratulate our 2021 Nebula Award Finalists! The awards will be presented on May 21st, 2022 online aboard the SFWA Airship! Please see the list here:
Congratulations to
@sillysyntax
for her short story "Laughter Among the Trees" placing on the Nebula Awards ballot! This may be a first for The Dark, but I will have to double-check!
@TheMarySue
I like some of those things. I am not an unfeminine writer because I write bleak chilling ghosts stories. Really, this was a very basic take, IMO of course.
Do you know what you want to achieve artistically? I've been thinking about this a lot because it's a question I've been asked/talked about with interviewers/writer friends recently. No is a 100 valid answer.
I just cannot get behind the word "content" used for stories or art and I see people using it and it's like they are slapping me and themselves in the face. Why you don't wanna call what you do art? Is it because it's the business buzz word? Is it cuz it's mercenary? +
I got a review in publishers weekly! That's new!
"Palumbo proves masterful at taking material from folklore and making it personal, letting those things that are meant to terrify speak for themselves. Readers are sure to be impressed."
I want AI enthusiasts to feed themselves to the dataset. Stop telling everyone else to give up their work and rights. YOU walk into the metal confines of the main frame and let it devour you. Then, if we want to hear your basic ideas we can turn a knob like a gumball machine.
@spaceandtimemag
This is disappointing. AI is "involved" with scraping art and words from artists who have honed their work over years. Asking whether this is friend or fiend is inviting debate where there is none. Corps are pushing AI as a tool to reduce having to pay and employ human artists +
I have been thinking and deleting my thoughts on this all day. Maybe cuz I'm associated with FIYAHCON/IGNYTE Awards I don't get invited to diversity panels. All of the points made by BIPOC in the quote tweets are valid. Read those. It's hard to articulate what I want to say +
This is the essential problem with the way most diversity panels are structured for conventions. They are built for white people to learn how to profit by writing "the other"
It's an honor for me to present the Caribbean Special issue of
@strangehorizons
with
@Marika_Writes_
I am incredibly proud of the writers and work we were able to publish and of everyone who submitted their work for consideration. It's a dream come true +
My struggle with the SFF space particularly in the short story realm is lack of nuance....what we are getting, not always but a lot of the time is protagonists who are deemed marginalized and perfect. Someone oppressed and hurt them. They have a pet. and everyone loves a pet. +
lol my short fiction writing stats the last two months.
Submissions: 0
Rejections: 0
Acceptances: 0
Holds: 0
It's okay though! Dis a marathon. Pace, Pace. Watch when I'm ready. 😉 I'll have a whole 1 out! 🔥

@FantasyMagazine
called: "Oral Storytelling and Culture as Personal Canon"
Did I write about Soca and Trini food in an essay about my SFFH influences? I did. 😀
