True story: In 1993, a tanuki and a fox snuck into a doburoku (unfiltered sake) festival, helped themselves to leftovers and passed out together. Locals captured the scene with a photograph, then watched over them until they woke up the next day and left. Real life folklore🤣

The lightest punishment in the Edo Era was Shikari 叱 a reprimand. There were two levels of this, a regular reprimand and Kitto急度叱 a severe scolding. Both of these could mean your relatives and friends were all called down to the police office and given a group tongue lashing.

Takeda Kotsugai 武田物外 (1795–1867) was a Zen priest and martial artist from the Edo period. He founded the Fusen-ryū school of jujutsu. In this scene he is trapping the sword of a Shinsengumi member with two tea bowls/ begging bowls (because monks don't use weapons.)
