Looking back it’s odd how there weren’t a lot more people expecting Starfield to be as repetitive and obtuse as it was. Bethesda kept comparing it to Daggerfall specifically, they were very upfront about that.

“Yeah this thing that almost nobody has believed for thousands of years is real, and all the world’s governments are working to keep it secret… why? I dunno. What to do about it? Uhh… nothing I guess, except spreading the word about it in as many online spaces as you can”.

It’s sort of a perfect theory to test this- it requires a belief so extreme (in terms of departure from basic observable reality) that subjects are willing to ostracize themselves for it, but is also oddly benign in a lack of tangible “targets” for them to potentially go after.

That huge burst of “flat earth” theories in 2010-13ish was an experiment to test how far and fast a theory like that can spread online, what vectors and techniques are used, and which people are likelier to pick it up and spread it further.
