On several occasions lately I’ve had to manually download PMS swatch files from Pantone’s website and add them as a color in Creative Cloud libraries so it syncs across the suite. Not elegant but the only solution I’ve found.

Definitely start from a template. It’s SO much easier to get up and running and if you’re comfortable with basic CSS you can still get a fairly custom look that’s built on a really scalable, modular framework. Going custom can create some headaches with apps & integrations.

Don't understand the pushback here. Solutions like this have existed in the industry forever. Noun project, squarespace, unsplash etc. In my experience, companies using these services aren't the ones hiring for specialized talent anyway. They either use free icons or none at all
