After a unanimous vote yesterday on a compromise Black History Month resolution that didn’t include

The Gates is a 19th-century synagogue, one of the oldest such buildings in the US, lovingly preserved and moved from its original site to James Madison Park. It’s one of the most deeply beautiful things about Madison on so many levels. What a vile and heartbreaking sight.

's arrest shows that the manhandling was worse than I realized. You can clearly see a cop grabbing her throat/chin from behind while she grimaces in pain
Contrast: In November 2023, a group of Nazis marched on campus/through downtown Madison, pointedly stopping at a historic synagogue. City and campus police did little about it and shrugged it off as a simple free-speech issue with a side of "well obviously we condemn..."
An email sent from UW-Madison regarding protest policies informs students, faculty, and staff: "Failing to abide by these limitations can and will have consequences, both within our code of student conduct and more broadly under Wisconsin law."
UW Professor Samer Alatout, who was arrested by UWPD this morning, is addressing protestors. “The administration is not the university, it is part of the university. We are all the university,” Alatout said.
In case you've forgotten about the absurdity of August leases in Madison, one of my friends is moving *upstairs in the same building* and has to find somewhere else to put her shit overnight
if you're protesting in Madison this weekend, please remember that the cops still have tear gas, various projectiles, and other evil shit they've used indiscriminately on protestors. Your local elected officials didn't have the guts to take these things away or cut their funding
These people could not care less about Madisonians’ well-being, have been lethally negligent in the face of a pandemic, but never miss an opportunity to play cheap resentment politics
“Violent protest is the exact opposite of how change will occur,” says
@SpeakerVos
at Capitol media availability this morning. He and GOP leaders are responding to violent and destructive protest last night in Madison.
Seriously,
@GovEvers
and election officials around the state need to basically tell the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take a flying fuck at the moon and do all they can to force the issue and push this thing back. Fucking do it, lives are at stake
On Friday night, artist Lilada Gee found out that her exhibit for MMoCA's "Aint I A Woman?" had been vandalized. Gee, beyond being distraught, tells Madison365's
@davedahmer
that she is searching for answers about the incident.
The worst part of a pandemic is that America is full of adults who need the concept of “things affecting other people” explained to them every five fucking seconds
This is a huge deal.
@AboutFreedomInc
fought an uphill battle and did. not. stop. the whole window of what people think is possible in Madison has shifted radically
BREAKING: The Madison School Board just voted unanimously to terminate the contract with the Madison Police Department, removing police from schools effective immediately. Full coverage to come.

Liberal

Karofsky won despite election disrupted by coronavirus outbreak, Democrats' calls of voter suppression
The fact that Michels conceded should not erase the fact that he’s a fascist who ran on election denial. Same for his party and all the orgs that prop it up. Don’t forgive or forget. Ruin them.
UW System President Jay Rothman said the “clashes” were “instigated by the protesters.”
In all video footage taken by the Cardinal, police officers were the first to encircle the encampment and begin to push.
Marijuana is still illegal in Wisconsin, but does it really matter when a legal cannabis dispensary is 1,000ft. away in Illinois? Not for many living anywhere near that border. Excellent and informative piece by

In Madison we make renting or owning a home increasingly unaffordable, fail to create resources for homeless people, evict homeless people from one camp spot after another, then scold homeless people for supposedly mucking up the parts of the city that are gentrifying fastest
UW admin is not telling the full truth by a long shot when it blames arrests on protestors, saying they “pushed toward officers at times becoming confrontational.” I didn’t witness it all of course, but largely saw cops surrounding protestors who peaceably stood their ground
“You’re giving demands that this committee doesn’t need to listen to,” Wisconsin Assembly Rep. John Spiros (R-Marshfield) tells Milwaukee activist Kamila Ahmed, testifying today about de-escalation and bad experiences with police. Then Spiros bangs his gavel a bunch and adjourns
one wonders how different this could have been if Dems hadn't totally half-assed one Congressional race, hadn't let two Congressional races go *entirely unchallenged*, and hadn't actively joined in on vile, racist crime nonsense. just thoughts folks!!
A Madison-themed comedy duo called Sherman & Sherman, the whole act is an argument about where the east side ends and the north side begins, then the 02 bus runs them over
If you are still waiting to vote for Gloria Reyes, STAY IN LINE! A medical professional will arrive shortly to figure out what, exactly, makes you such a cop
Friday is an extra-good day to buy music on Bandcamp because the platform is waiving its (pretty reasonable) cut of sales and letting all that money go to the artists. Lemme recommend various Madison things that would be good to buy

We are prepared to activate the Wisconsin National Guard to protect state buildings and infrastructure and are continuing to work with local law enforcement to understand their response to last night’s events and their plan to respond to similar events in the future.
This is very unambiguously the police attacking and arresting a crowd of nonviolent protestors. No broken shop windows to point to in this morning’s events. No tear gas but I saw at least a couple cops with launchers
The camping thing is even more idiotic in a place whose "beloved" (horrid) moving day "traditions" (things we put up with because city officials are too chickenshit to stand up to landlords) include people having a "homeless night" between leases
🧵 Wow, stuff you won’t find in the press (retweet this, let’s make it viral)! Two days before the primary, so here’s a recap of our enthusiastic campaign: yesterday we earned the endorsement of Congresswoman
@Ilhan
! The biggest endorsement in the race.
Windows of businesses and residential buildings being smashed on University Avenue — which were not preemptively boarded up. This Papa John’s employee asks protesters, “Do you want Trump to be elected?”
If I were Kraft Foods I would simply leave a gaping economic hole in the north side of Madison but still pay people to drive a giant hot dog car around the city, like a demented child-emperor

here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna pool our money. $15k should do. we're gonna buy a dozen chest freezers. we're gonna place the largest order in Burrito Drive history and store these things, for our own survival and so that future generations know how beautiful life can be
been trying to report this story since November and I'm still kind of amazed that this info hasn't come out in a public way yet, beyond one obscure state board
A UW-Madison student unknowingly damaged one of the Indigenous mounds on campus in July 2021. Almost a year later, there's been almost no public attention on the incident, but UW officials have agreed to improve protections for the ancient monuments
I'm not gonna link to it but some folks in Madison have a habit of portraying Freedom Inc. as highly racialized caricatures of irrational yelling black people when in fact they're very organized and have a strategy that has massively shifted discussions on race/cops in Madison
Despite a menu on
@UberEats
, I can assure you Crystal Corner Bar does not have a kitchen so cannot serve you lobster ravioli or an arugula salad. We can barely pour you a whiskey soda in a timely manner. But stop in for a selection from our Nut Hut or an Emil’s 🍕!

That the city had cops and cop cars to spare to arrest one single activist today but can’t seem to get its shit together protecting people from vehicular attacks is not a good argument for policing and state-driven public safety as we know it! 🤔🤔🤔
