Director of New America’s Open Technology Institute... but tweets are all my own!

A bittersweet announcement as I say goodbye to the organization that has been my professional home for over a decade (and to the many, many incredible people I worked with along the way), but I'm truly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the stellar team @NTIAgov
After ~11 years at @OTI, OTI Director @sarmorris will join @NTIAgov as Senior Advisor to @DavidsonNTIA, working to invest in bridging the #DigitalDivide. OTI's Chief of Staff @ckapadia will serve as OTI's interim director. Our statement:

It’s been a privilege working with @rmack over the past decade and watching @rankingrights grow into a leader on human rights in the digital age. Rebecca: it's bittersweet to say goodbye, but we're all better off for what you've accomplished here. Cheers to your next chapter!
I am grateful to my friend and colleague @ellerybiddle and the rest of the @rankingrights team for this moving farewell blog post as I wind down my final week with the non-profit research program I founded in early 2013.

Listen to @FranOchillo and keep this front of mind, particularly as we talk about $100B in outlays of federal funding for broadband.
Nobody knows their community better than the local leaders who are not only officials but also neighbors. In overlooked towns and cities, we must empower local solutions developed and implemented by the people they benefit. #SubCommTech

The @OversightBoard is right to uphold @Facebook's Trump deplatforming, and to require the company to publish criteria for restoring a suspended account. Read our full statement from @sarmorris: https://t.co/LcUI3OrGia

Super excited about this important new report out today from my @OTI colleagues
Why is the tech industry failing on equity? In a new report, @kjbagchi & Brittany Thomas say the problem is twofold: process & personnel. Read our road map for much-needed change in an industry that continues to produce biased & discriminatory products.

I routinely get asked on conference calls/presentations whether I mean $37,000 per year. It blows people's minds that if you are an adult without children you never quality. Plus a parent loses Medicaid coverage once a disabled child turns 18, leaving them in the gap.
I think we sometimes get numb to these numbers. If you're a parent in a family of three in Texas and make more than $3,733 PER YEAR, you make too much to be eligible for Medicaid. If you're an adult without kids in Texas who isn't elderly or disabled, you're ineligible, period.

Hear hear! This was a tremendous lift on a very tight timeline, and the agency’s work will be critical in making internet affordable to the people who need it most during the pandemic.

When AI is combined with the raw power of the U.S. gov't, the results can be both unexpected and alarmingly bad... The procurement process is a crucial opportunity to set clear standards for trustworthy AI. More from me & @LeilaDoty in @ISSUESinST 👇 https://t.co/G9IyhRHumY

To avoid buying unfair and untrustworthy AI decision making tools, the federal government should reform its procurement process.

Yep. This is a story about the power of organizing, not Comcast’s generosity.
“Today’s announcement shows that Comcast can improve its service for families and community members in need, at any time,” said Devren Washington, Senior Policy Organizer of the @mvmalliance 🔥🔥 https://t.co/E67Sn3kXsh

Started the day listening to Marine One overhead in its final moments en route to JBA. Ended the evening watching the tip tops of the fireworks closing out the inauguration concert on the Mall. Ready for tomorrow.

While today’s terrible display of terror and meanness shakes us, let’s remember: @ossoff, Jewish son of an immigrant & @ReverendWarnock, first Black Senator from Georgia, will join a Catholic POTUS & the first woman, Black + Indian VP in our nation’s capital. God bless America.
