It was a pleasure working on this story for @onlinehyphen with @denisethewriter. Take a break from poll anxiety and give it a read.

ICYMI, it's a good time to re-read her NYT opinion piece on the same:

No matter our intentions, lawyers like me were complicit. We owe the country our honesty about what we saw — and should do in the future.

It includes a pretty damning quote from ex-DOJ lawyer Erica Newland: “I feel confident that anti-Muslim bias is part of what enabled the supreme court to feel it could get away with claiming that the Muslim ban was a rational policy response to an allegedly real problem.”

Media and political leaders have been eerily quiet about Trump's vow to bring back EO 13769 aka the Muslim ban. In his first piece for @onlinehyphen, @KZiabari asks why. Proud to have worked on this piece.

In 2017, the 45th president outraged the world by blocking immigration to the US from several Muslim-majority countries. Now he wants to impose even harsher sanctions

Silicon Valley firms have been pitching the defense community hard on AI uses for military contexts. This needs much closer scrutiny from policymakers, @HeidyKhlaaf, @mer__edith and I argue in a new paper released today:

That shiny Silicon Valley tool comes with big risks for civilians, according to a new report.

The assault on socio-technical researchers studying online misinformation is a clear and present threat to democratic norms. Excited about this, my first piece w/ @Compilerdotnews and tremendously grateful to everyone who lent their time and thoughts to it.

Proud to have edited this story https://t.co/l25u1E4IJK Deeply appreciative of the terrific work of all the (now former) Coda staff, the depths of experience that sources shared, and the razor-sharp insights from experts like @Bomu @AuthorPMBarrett @ubiquity75

So: resist the hype. Take the long view. And read @isocockerell's story on “green colonialism” and techno-solutionism in the Swedish Arctic, which I had the privilege of editing last fall. It has forever changed the way I think about tech & the climate.

Industry leaders say natural resources in northern Sweden can power the green transition. But environmentalists and Indigenous groups say they’re trying to fix the climate in precisely the same way...

One especially risky geoengineering idea is to literally dim the light from the sun. The technique is being tested in the western US. This @nytimes story makes it sound exciting, cutting-edge, disruptive...reminds me of starry-eyed AI coverage. Yikes.
nytimes.com
A trial in California is testing a machine designed to reflect sunlight back into space. “All my colleagues hope that we never use these things,” one researcher said.

ICYMI, geoengineering is a kind of science that seeks to “tweak” the natural environment so that we can have our carbon emitting-cake and eat it too. Some of its loudest purveyors are sipping that same potent cocktail of hubris and megalomania that dominates Silicon Valley.

Listen to @SashaMTL on this: "This is so symptomatic of the broken relationship between AI and the environment. We can't magically generate more energy, nor is geoengineering a viable climate solution."
This is so symptomatic of the broken relationship between AI and the environment. We can't magically generate more energy, nor is geoengineering a viable climate solution. We need to stop stuffing gen AI into everything and reduce its energy use, right now.

If we want to keep living on Earth, we must reduce emissions and use less energy. But @sama says we shouldn’t worry. At Davos, he suggested using geoengineering as a “stopgap” measure to offset the destruction that AI will cause to the climate.
thestreet.com
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said that energy breakthroughs are needed to power the future of artificial intelligence.

Tech industry leaders get pretty slippery when asked how their businesses affect the planet. The fact is, they are using enormous amounts of energy. The evidence is plain to see. @SashaMTL is all over it. So is @_KarenHao
