our latest preprint is available! with @JoseCaparrosPhD, we optimised a methodology for assessing the nasal microbiome using nasal lining fluid, validated with long read sequencing, and it may be a less invasive surrogate for nasal swabs thanks to seed funding by @WalyanCentre

Made a simple long read phage assembly pipeline with @AVaitekenas and @samueltmont . - No logging, no checks, nothing fancy, just click and hope (for now)... - Need to turn it into a conda package somehow next? https://t.co/nFeKbv8UMj

With newer @nanopore quality, you only need 10x depth to match or exceed Illumina SNP/variant calling in bacteria, including homopolymer regions. https://t.co/SZ5JLiC9Oh

Variant calling is fundamental in bacterial genomics, underpinning the identification of disease transmission clusters, the construction of phylogenetic trees, and antimicrobial resistance predicti...

makes it really hard to plan studies using #nanopore when these things are changed that have effects on outcomes (time to result for pathogen detection) and could affect adaptive sampling etc without justification or explanation

hey @nanopore - if you make an update to the software required to run your devices and fundamentally change how data is basecalled (not keeping up w/ v23.11.03+), it'd be great if you explained why or at a bare minimum put it in the changelog

I've confirmed with @antoinette_news that this post is what @abcnews said violated their 'social media policy' & is why they fired her. @hrw is the world's most prestigious human rights organisation. This is deeply alarming censorship & intimidation by ABC management.

Our co-author, Dr Hammam, was killed today. He was a gracious, articulate, dedicated doctor. Hammam last messaged me this morning: “Your shouting means a lot to us. Please keep it up.” So that’s what we do. Keep it up. Everyone. @crikey_news @sophblack

Shameful for WA gov that Unit 18 at Casuarina is still open. 22 hours of isolation for children in a maximum security adult prison. Unlawful and violates human rights. Truly awful. Important advocacy and warnings from @SocialRWA fall on deaf ears with @WAGovernment

The Government’s Science, Research and Innovation Budget tables reveal that Gov't investment in R&D is at the lowest on record at 0.49% (as a percentage of GDP). In February, Australia’s leading scientists urged the government to commit to a ‘bold & ambitious’ structural reform

this data is fantastic and will be in incredible resource for those in the COVID-19 space
Our pre-print is out!! Proud to share our work as part of the world’s first human #COVID-19 challenge study, in which we looked to temporally resolve the epithelial and immune response in SARS-CoV-2 infections at the single-cell level. 🧬🦠🔬 Key highlights summarised👇🧵(1/6)

funding rate below a p value cut off - what an absolute waste of time for early career researchers who are already so time poor and have little job security, so spend too long applying for grants like this where success is almost random chance #MRFF
Am I the only one who feels disturbed looking at these stats? 307 teams of #ECRs spent countless hours putting in applications with 9 awarded (2.9% success rate). #mrff #emcr #AcademicTwitter #postdoc
