Mealworms & superworms have become the poster children for plastic biodegradation, but new research shows that while they can chew PVC, they can’t eat away at the problem. @WoodsideEnergy @arc_gov_au @Fritz_Lab @UWAresearch

🚫🪱 Can worms eat away our PVC problem? Not quite. Our new study shows mealworms & superworms chew on plasticized #PVC but gain nothing—no biodegradation, just toxicity. Brilliant work by Zahra & Sinu! @ProfRobAtkin @Fritz_Lab @uwanews @SMS_UWA 🔗 https://t.co/QTIy0OG0GC

New #RSCSustainability study shows that Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is not chemically degraded by mealworms emphasising the need for alternative plastic waste management strategies. Read the full paper from Zahra Tahroudi and @Fritz_Lab: https://t.co/egAj4a36Wp

For instance, rearing worms individually prevented false weight gains attributed to cannibalism. Also, co-feeding EPS with bran should be avoided, as mealworms prioritize consuming bran and only approach EPS once the bran is depleted, causing misleading biomass increases...

This not only raises questions about the utility of these insect larvae for sustainable plastic recycling but also highlights the need for well-controlled experiments to avoid artifacts. @RSC_Sus @ProfRobAtkin @SMS_UWA @uwanews

Work by Zahra Tahroudi shows that mealworms do not chemically degrade expanded polystyrene - they simply starve on EPS if confounding cannibalism among the worms is prevented! No change in polymer size. Are they just expert munchers creating microplastics? https://t.co/kjPSZSYX7q
