2.) in some systems, POM decomposition has the potential to be decoupled from MAOM formation, as we don't observe any change in MAOM stoichiometry, or coincident increase in litter derived MAOM as litter derived POM was decomposed. We did however, see some patterns in the CHAOM. .

The big implications being that 1.) the MAOM formation via the sorption of soluble litter materials (either in or ex vivo) that occurs relatively early in the decomposition process (sensu Cotrufo et al., 2015-- the same plots!) seems to form relatively stable MAOM, and. .

While those results might be expected, one of the really cool things we observed is that the amount of litter derived MAOM present at year 10 is pretty much the same as the amount that formed during the first year, and has a very similar C:N ratio.

The way these organic substrates persist over time really varies though. After ~ 10 years, the bulk of PyOM remains in the POM fraction, while the majority of litter-derived C and N is in the MAOM fraction.

First off -- SOM derived from PyOM is much more persistent than litter derived SOM (not super surprising), even when we account C loss during the pyrolysis.

Very excited to have this out (and in Nature Geoscience, no less!). We returned to in-field incubations of isotopically enriched litter and pyrogenic OM ten years after inception, and were able to glean some insights into the persistence patterns of the SOM that was formed.
