📢 New paper! 📢 We have a lot of evidence that microbial communities are important for litter decomposition but we haven't evaluated those microbial community effects in ecosystem-scale models using empirical data. Now this work has! 1/n

I am so grateful to have joined such a lovely group of collaborators for this work, all of whom contributed in huge ways. This was such a great project to teach me process-based modeling and that’s largely thanks to my collaborators! 6/6

Overall, we believe parameterizing MIMICS with microbial community data form the field provides more confidence in our model output, since it is underlain by empirical measurements. 5/n

We also provide a case study for assimilating empirical bacterial community data into functional microbial groups in an ecosystem model. We think this is a great starting point for empirical-modeling integration of soil microbial data! 4/n

We reasonably represent 3 drivers of litter decomp (proxies for climate, litter quality, and microbial community) w/o compromising model performance. This predicted higher litter mass loss under climate change at 3 sites, w/ implications for C-climate feedbacks. 3/n

We used the MIMICS model coupled to a litter decomp dataset to evaluate: (1) effect of representing empirical drivers of litter decomp for ecosystem model performance and predictions (2) the potential for integrating microbial composition data into an ecosystem model 2/n
