With Biden's campaign talking about big plans for rail, here's a map that Amtrak is circulating with ambitious but realistic expansions over the next 15 years. The railroad says this would cost $25 billion

Buttigieg on DOT's role: "I know we think about planes, trains, automobiles, but what about bikes, scooters, wheelchairs for that matter? ... Roads aren't only for vehicles. Got to make sure that pedestrians, individuals, cyclists and businesses can coexist on the same roadway."
Here's some of who Buttigieg beat out for DOT:
-David Kim (8 years at DOT, LA Transit, head of Calif's state transportation agency)
-Sarah Feinberg (4 years at DOT, led FRA, head of NYC Transit)
-John Porcari (led Maryland DOT, USDOT deputy secretary)
This entire thread is mind-boggling. Rolling stops like he's describing, which were built into the Tesla software and resulted in a recall, are literally illegal in every state of the country.

He’s actually a lobbyist, not a journalist. There are many who pose as the latter while behaving like the former. No integrity.
Indeed, there were no safety issues. The car simply slowed to ~2 mph & continued forward if clear view with no cars or pedestrians.

"There was a time when everybody believed that the best way to deal with a congested road was to add more lanes. Sometimes that might be true, but sometimes you just get more cars and more congestion. We have to create alternatives,...
Buttigieg in North Carolina today via press pool: "When we envision travel for the next 50 years, the train should be a common sense option. The rumble of rails. The freedom of looking out your train window should once again be known to be as all-American as the open road."
Two things about the rail labor dispute that I think are going under the radar:
-How minimal the worker protections are that the unions are asking for
-How massive the disruption would be to economy and society if the unions strike
The two previous relief bills, which were created when Republicans led the Senate and Trump was president, also sent stimulus checks to incarcerated people. Cotton voted for both of them
To recap the last hour: Trump admin says it will be lifting restrictions on non-citizens entering from Brazil and the EU on Jan. 26.
Biden spokesperson says, actually, that's up to us and we won't be doing that.
In congratulating Joe Biden, Amtrak leans into the climate argument for rail.
"As we look to the future, expanded Amtrak service is essential to decarbonizing our transportation network"

"We’ve been asked to settle for less in this country. I don’t know why people in other countries should have better train service"

@BernieSanders
& I called for Buttigieg to implement fines & penalties on airlines for cancelling flights. Why were these recommendations not followed? This mess with Southwest could have been avoided. We need bold action.
Since the Alaska Airlines incident, it's likely that more than 300 people have died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States, based on NHTSA averages from last few years.
National media priorities remain grossly out of whack when it comes to transportation safety

"If this government doesn’t work for us, we need to focus on the fact that it is our labor that gives all the value to this country. This country doesn’t run without us as workers. We have to think about that option as well."
Senator Jon Tester with some glowing praise for Buttigieg:
"You have put on a clinic on how a nominee should work and act. You haven't avoided the questions. You've been straightforward. And you know what the hell you're talking about. And that's pretty damn refreshing."
The e-bike industry is booming, but the summer of 2023 has brought sharp questions about how safe e-bikes are, especially for teenagers. To some policymakers and law enforcement officials, the technology has outpaced existing laws and safety regulations.
Staffer familiar with the Senate infrastructure negotiations lets loose:
"It’s a fucking mess, it’s a cluster. It’s 22 people, they’re all defending their pet rocks. The communication is very confused."

I know that complaining about Elon Musk is really the definition of taking the bait. But it's hard to stomach that his troll attitude on Twitter actually translates into the design of the cars Tesla is putting on public roads
Approximately every 4.6 days someone posts The High-Speed Rail Map and gets 30,000 likes. This is a phenomenon that anthropologists will study for hundreds of years.
SCOOP: The White House considers indexing the gas tax to inflation to be a violation of Biden's pledge not to raise taxes on people making under $400k and is not willing to include it in infrastructure package, according to a source familiar with President Biden's thinking.

To be very clear here, the committee doesn't have the authority to order this. It's a request (albeit one with a lot of eyes on it). No indication yet from TSA or FBI that this has actually happened
Joe Biden's infrastructure plan says he wants to "spark the second great rail revolution."
Here's what that might look like in a post-Covid world.
Comments from top Biden transportation adviser John Porcari today
In the first 14 months of her term as Transportation Secretary, Elaine Chao spent vastly more time meeting with officials from Kentucky than any other state. 25 PERCENT of her meetings with local officials were with Kentuckians.

You're telling me that Gregg Berhalter, a coach with a .500 record in his MLS career, is now struggling in World Cup qualifying, the only part of his job (which he got through nepotism) that matters?

Buttigieg on Biden's reversal of transgender military ban:
"Everyone in politics says that they support our troops. This is an example of what it means to actually do it, to support all of our troops and to support patriotic Americans who wish to be among our troops."
Navy Seal who claims he killed Osama Bin Laden banned from Delta Air Lines after posting a maskless picture in clear defiance of the airline's (extremely straightforward!) mask policy.
The unions want (unpaid) time off to attend previously scheduled doctor's appointments without facing penalization up to and including the risk of being fired. That's it.

Here we go: Biden and Harris are meeting with senators on infrastructure tomorrow, with Transportation Secretary Buttigieg joining virtually from quarantine
Transportation Secretary Buttigieg says it's tempting to fixate on high-profile new stuff, like high-speed rail and electrification of vehicles. But:

There's never been an incoming Transportation Secretary like Pete Buttigieg.
Here's our story on what it will mean for the agency to have a political celebrity at the helm
The White House ousts FERC chairman (a former McConnell aide!) after his move toward climate-friendlier policies. (He'll still remain a commissioner).
This is a big story
Let me be more explicit. Chatterjee's carbon pricing move, and his recent action to open wholesale power markets to distributed energy like rooftop solar, was a clear driver in this decision by the White House.
The Senate votes to confirm Pete Buttigieg as Transportation Secretary, 86-13.
He's the first openly gay Senate-confirmed cabinet secretary in U.S. history.
