Thanks to all who came out to the launch. Fitting to have it on Dublin’s north side (where Burke was born). Even more fitting to have it in Belvedere House given that a key moment in Burke’s story - a duel between Francis and Hastings - took place at Belvedere House, Kolkata!

I was very chuffed to see Edmund Burke included in Eoin's Books of the Year for 2024. Looks like I'm in good company too.

That's very kind of you to say. I'm glad that the book's contemporary relevance is ringing true.
Uncivil Mirth by @rossecarroll is properly excellent - and an important text for thinking about contemporary debates about #speech, satire and laughter.

How much does it cost to run a general election campaign? Prof Iain McMenamin @imcmenamin, from the School of Law and Government @LawGovDCU, said what people here “would be surprised at is how little is spent”. Read more here in @IrishTimes: https://t.co/kHPZGkNCN6

Really enjoyed this work on Edmund Burke by @rossecarroll A concise and rich analysis of Burke's political life and thought, which draws out several perennially important considerations for political conduct - 'When all about you are full of presumption [...] dare to be fearful'

Nice work from @AntonJaegermm: “While the internet has radically lowered the costs of political expression, it has also pulverized the terrain of radical politics, blurring the borders between party and society and spawning a chaos of vaguely mandated online actors.”
“As Clinton handed a presidential medal to Rawls as ‘perhaps the greatest political philosopher of the twentieth century who helped a generation of learned Americans revive their faith in democracy’, popular disengagement was reaching a Jim Crow era level.” https://t.co/S40Ba3jWTN

Fascinating papers delivered in the criminal law stream at yesterday's @LexConnect_Conf for law PhD students, hosted in it's inaugural year at @LawGovDCU. Was great to meet emerging criminal law scholars and act as discussant in response to their papers

These massacres have become so horrifyingly routine that they barely make it into the top three stories in the papers. At least 93, including 20 children, reported killed in Israeli attack on Gaza building https://t.co/QIJhzw23r1

At least 93 reported dead or missing after Israeli missile strikes house packed with members of extended family displaced by war

My wife rocks the purple robes better than I do. But how lovely to have the excuse to wear them! Congrats to all the @LawGovDCU and @HumanitiesDCU students who we saw take the stage.

Fantastic to see this! My office is just down the hall from @GezimVisoka. I’m hoping that some of his phenomenal publication energy transfers to me by osmosis through the walls. 👏
Advance copy of my latest book arrived today ahead of its publication next week! ‘The Derecognition of States’ https://t.co/klBySESirz Many thanks to the University of Michigan Press (@UofMPress) for publishing it as open access!

Absolutely delighted that @AMasternardi and Zornista received their parchment yesterday! It was an honour to be part of their special day! @HumanitiesDCU
Yesterday also saw the celebration of three PhD graduations from the school. Zornitsa Lachezarova Todorova and Annalisa Mastronardi (pictured) graduated alongside Iuliia Ibragimova. A huge achievement! @HumanitiesDCU

I very much enjoyed this interview. I would have enjoyed it even more if my dog hadn’t barked at the bin men when I was trying to explain Burke’s Vindication of Natural Society (!). We talked conservatism, Burke’s complex imperialism, slave trade reform, and lots more besides.
New interview with Ross Carroll about Edmund Burke. https://t.co/hIQBEVolmn

An astonishing statistic. But remember folks, we’re not allowed to use the phrase “vulture fund” because someone in government thought it sounded mean.
Last year just 846 apartments were bought by individuals and families. 6,203 were bought up by investment funds to be rented out at exorbitant prices. It's no wonder homeownership is at its lowest level in more than 50 years. https://t.co/Dog4gTpsLe

Impressive turnout this morning for funeral of Prof Tom Garvin of UCD, first President (1984–87) of PSAI. Distinguished academic – and, while some people can be described as ‘no craic’, no-one ever said that about Tom Garvin. https://t.co/gDsPJ5IppX

Sad to learn of Tom’s passing. He taught me at UCD and encouraged me to take the life-transforming decision to pursue a PhD in the US. As a student I once bumped into him at a swimming pool and he said he had my exam results in the car if I wanted to see them! Quite a character.
