Sad news. James Mayall taught me as an undergraduate and was a brilliant teacher and kind man. He was also, I believe, the last surviving British diplomat who served in @UKinIndia Delhi High Commission in the 1960s - on which I interviewed him about 18 months ago. RIP.

https://t.co/ICH817Fr0Z James Mayall has died. He was one of the doyens of African & international studies in the UK. He and I were discussing mortality just a month ago after good friends had died. He seemed well then. He examined my PhD decades ago and was the finest colleague.

Where have Reform’s supporters come from? Less than two in five of their supporters voted Reform in 2024: a fifth voted Conservative last year, a fifth did not vote, and 15 per cent voted Labour.

There's a lot to be said for gatherings like this. Time to think, listen, and learn. And where better to do this that at Casa Ratiu in Transylvania, under a Parliament of Owls. My huge thanks to the Ratiu Foundation and family for making this possible. 5/5

There was real debate: about Trump, Europe, Ukraine, populism, cognitive warfare and disinformation. And a proper sense of perspective: discussion too of history, and some pushback on whether this all looks like an essentially European (rather than global) discussion. 4/5
