I’ve realized it’s almost impossible to avoid de-intellectualization once you leave the university scene. I try my best to read at least 15+ books a year, I take courses, volunteer etc. but there’s still nothing like the environment of a university which constantly engages you

I met Asad a bit before the Occupy episode, during the UC "occupation movement" prelude to it, in fact. We shared interests, theoretical and historical, that many others in that milieu did not. This was once source of what I felt was our closeness, our understanding. 1/
