In class today we used Maxwell's equations to derive the wave equation for the E & B fields in empty space.
When you ask them to calculate 1/sqrt(mu_0 epsilon_0) and they realize that number is the speed of light is a pretty great moment!
Physics is the realization that math represents reality. Physics is fundamentally, *essentially* theoretical.
Where experiment comes in is that nature is the arbiter of our theories.

Tangentially, consider the following: if you like your insurance and want to keep it, there's a very good chance that's because you haven't had to use it and thus don't realize what garbage it is...
I wish I knew what to say. I don’t. My university’s administration has decided, for whatever reason, to inflict maximal damage to both the university’s academics and its reputation, for no discernible reason. It’s bad and I’m against it.

This is the clearest case yet for abolishing the police. If they can't even be bothered to try to stop insurrection, there is absolutely no need for them. They cause much harm and provide no good.
One of my research students has been award the NSF GRFP!!! I'm so happy and proud!!! Please DM me if you're interested in recruiting a very promising undergraduate that's looking for grad schools 😃
This is a monument to the Choctaw people in Midleton, Co. Cork, Ireland. During the great famine, indigenous peoples of America sent aid to the Irish, who were suffering needlessly at the hands of the British empire.

More than once I've heard "I have a comment" followed by "I have a comment on the comment" followed by "I have a comment on the comment on the comment".
Sometimes that leads to "DOES ANYONE HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE SPEAKER?" but not often enough.
@IBJIYONGI
Years ago when I was in Michigan, my office mate from India told me about the racism he experienced in Europe. It was so bad that he didn’t believe there was any racism in the US 😳 I politely explained that there was, but he didn’t seem to believe me.
My attendance policy has always been and always will be: attendance is strongly recommended but it is not required and you are not graded on it. My pandemic-inspired but permanent addition: it will always be possible to attend class remotely.

@quantum_graeme
I honestly think it's a good amount of both. And as an addendum to that, I think the nearly impossible job market is really a key part of the disillusionment with academia (even though there are many other things about it that can also cause disillusionment, especially now).
Noether BTW was one of the greatest mathematical physicists in history. Her insights underpin much of modern day fundamental physics. The unifying idea behind linear & angular momentum conservation? Noether’s theorem. Scandal that she’s not more famous
You don't learn anything just by measuring shit. You learn by measuring shit and then comparing that new information to what you knew before. Sometimes it's direct comparison to models, other times it's comparing to (and building on) previous experimental results.
Friends, colleagues. Please consider donating to the legal fund to help faculty affected by the ongoing program cuts at UNCG. This is the leading edge of the fight for public education, not only in NC, but the US.
"Ron is literally one of the best professors I have ever had. I ADORE this man. He is inspiring and encouraging, and every time we get deep into an in class discussion on the application of physics to real life, he makes me mildly consider changing my major to physics." 1/2

People who claim that in-person meetings are obviously vastly superior to online meetings are always very concerned that hybrid meetings will make in-person meetings obsolete since no one will want to attend in person... 🤔
@ZhongboK
There are so many reasons why conferences should be hybrid from now on. We have the technological ability! It's pro-parent, pro-accessibility, pro-environment... the list goes on
And as a friendly request, for both your mental health and the health of our server, please go easy on refreshing the Rumor Mill pages. That didn't cause the problems this morning, but it has given us issues in the past.
All experimental results, even completely by themselves, rest on previous theoretical knowledge. Sometimes that knowledge is so well-established that it's all too easy to overlook, but it's still there.
I know the world is totally fucked, but I want to interrupt your regularly scheduled doomscrolling to let you know that
@AliciaAarnio
is really terrific and I'm super grateful to be celebrating 12 years of marriage (and 15 years total) with her today.
Ignorant, hateful shit like this is the reason there aren’t more women in physics. The problem isn’t women, it’s men. It’s men because men say ignorant, hateful shit like this and aren’t held to account for it.
Happy birthday to Emmy Nother. One of the greatest mathematicians of all time just so happened to also be one of the greatest theoretical physicists of all time.
My favorite physicist of all time. I always discuss her and this result when I give talks about searches for P- and CP-violation in heavy ion collisions. She definitely deserved the Nobel Prize, and it’s shameful that she didn’t get it.
Chien-Shiung Wu, who gave an experimental proof of parity violation in weak nuclear decay, was born

in 1912. Her 1956 experiment involving the decay of Cobalt-60 confirmed that the weak interaction does not respect what many had assumed was a fundamental symmetry of nature.
Some truly exciting news: my grandmother, Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu, is going to be on a Forever stamp from the U.S. Postal Service. She was a nuclear physicist who helped disprove a fundamental law of nature and changed a field dominated by men. We’re so grateful for the honor.
Came across this nugget, from Dune:
“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”
Online conference:
-Lower carbon footprint
-More accessible (this extremely important)
In person conference:
-More natural/fluid conversation
Hybrid conference:
-Best way to maximize the number of people who can attend and get the most out of it in the way they choose
Emmy Noether isn’t famous like Albert Einstein, but she connected his revolutionary physics to the realm of pure mathematics.

Stephen Hawking was born

in 1942. He developed theorems with Penrose that determine when general relativity produces singularities, established classical laws of black hole mechanics, and hypothesized that quantum effects make black holes radiate.

Q: Briefly describe the history of the universe. You can start from the quark-gluon plasma phase, or earlier if you prefer.
A: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
Oh, students 😂😂😂
Controversial opinion: Physics is overrated. Statistics gave us linear regression which allows us to make simple extrapolations from almost any kind of numerical data. This ability has contributed massively to human progress. Much more useful that some silly physics equation.
The press release is public now:
No CME signal found in any of the observables. However, the results do pose some interesting questions and the work continues.
I dedicated mine to my grandma :) when I was a child I thought I was bad at math, and she always helped me with my math homework. She passed away about 2.5 years before I finished my PhD in physics. I couldn't have done it without her ❤️
Very much not the point of this excellent article, but apparently UNCG uses a PR firm? At a time when we're slashing programs because of a claimed "budget problem"?

On the rare occasions when it’s necessary for me to mention Feynman in class, I try to always mention he was a misogynist and a bad role model. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a great physicist, I just think we should be honest about the whole person.
I'm thinking about pure math and pure physics which, in contrast to their applied variants, do not have any direct or obvious technological applications. We do them because we love them, not because they have any practical value. They are, perhaps paradoxically, very human.
This is terrible and makes my job a lot harder. I will strongly encourage my students (and colleagues) to be good citizens of the community and continue to protect each other through continued mask wearing.
Beginning March 7, face coverings will be optional in most indoor locations, including classrooms and other instructional settings.

Great, great article about the cuts to higher ed being pushed around the country, and how people at affected universities are trying to fight back. UNCG features prominently.

I'm from NJ where we say "on line" instead of "in line" e.g. waiting on line. My wife always pretends to confuse this for "online"
Wife: what are you up to?
Me: waiting on line at the coffee shop
Wife: why are you waiting on the internet?
Me: omfg
... and that's the end of Physics 2! Thanks to the students for a great semester. It was very stressful at times, but overall I had a lot of fun. I hope they got something out of it too :)
