T1000 reprogrammed to make cartoons. Animation director and sometimes comicsmith. From the part of Canada where they make the stereotypes. Opinions are my own
Realizing it’s probably a good idea to assemble a list of all the various places on the internet that you can find me and my art and pin them here so people know where else to look for me in case they need to
“Why aren’t people making the kind of old-world classical sculptures and oil painting I like anymore?” I dunno dude why aren’t you providing an artist with a full time salary and residence on your property so they can focus on nothing but making one painting for three years.
I don’t completely understand how athletic tape works so I sort of assume the physiotherapist transcribes some runes on you and it fixes your tennis elbow
My dad watching the She-Hulk trailer: “why do they put the green on her when she isn’t big? Bruce isn’t green when he’s not big”
Me: “that is her when she’s big”
My dad: “that’s her when she’s big???”
I had no idea how many people didn’t know horse hooves need maintenance until a hoof trimming video can across my instagram feed and like 80% of the comments were people crying that this was animal abuse as though the guy was just cutting slices of an animal’s foot off for fun
I saw a new type of comment I’d never seen on people’s art before popping up that some variation of “what do you call this style?” and was briefly confused until I realized it’s people trying to trawl for prompts to feed into AI generators to mimic that artist’s style
Honestly a big part of the answer to the “why are so many American adult animated series ugly” is because studios are by and large terrified that if they make adult cartoons that look appealing to kids (or in a general “cartoony” way), audiences will assume they’re kid-safe
You know what I’m really happy for Lil Nas X for being able to provoke a genuine 1980’s style Satanic Panic pearl-clutching monocle pop reaction in 2021
I saw a similar discourse happen when I said Big Mouth treated me better than any other show I’d worked on and people were like “well if treating artists like people makes shows like Big Mouth we should abuse them more”, but I’ll tell you what actually happens-
My gender is the episode of Hey Arnold where they don’t invite Helga to the girl’s sleepover and the boys tease her for “not being a girl” but don’t let her play in their all boys baseball game, so she uncomfortably tries to perform femininity until she snaps
Thinking about the completely fake bomb/drug/criminal detection device that was sold for up to $8000 per unit to police and militaries the world over and was quite literally a useless piece of plastic full of strangely deliberately placed dead ants
A new study suggests that the biggest spreaders of coronavirus in the US are adults aged 20 to 49, but that doesn't mean they should be pushed to the head of the vaccine line, experts say
I think CONSTANTLY about cult classic media that “failed” by the box office measure but was foundational in the modern media landscape and how every year it gets harder make that. Highlander was a mid-budget box office flop that inspired like half of nerd media these days
Everyone pointing out that it’s suspicious how many AI tools are free, it’s because building a tech company these days 100% revolves around giving people your product for free/at an extreme discount until they forget how to function without it, then closing the jaws of the trap
I know this is mostly a joke but this really is the best way to improve your art; just draw a whole lot of what makes you happy, because drawing things you’re excited to draw is always gonna make you more enthusiastic and prolific than just doing rote technical drills.
When they talk about little Victorian children dying from exposure to the sensation of one flavor blasted goldfish cracker, this guy is the specific little Victorian child they’re talking about.
The wild thing about the whole “we’ll pay you for one day’s work to scan you and use your likeness in anything we want forever” is that they aren’t even offering the same licensing expectation you would give to a font.
In a sea of animation horror stories, I just want to say that in the time I spent on this show it was one of the most ethically-run productions I’ve ever been a part of. The process was constantly being evaluated to preserve quality of life and stave off burnout.
When people talk about “what’s alienating conservatives” about comics/games/movies/whatever I remember a conversation I had with a self-proclaimed conservative who said that if Gargoyles was made today (like not a reboot, exactly as it was in the 90’s) Elisa would be too “woke”
The most “adult” joke I’ve ever tried to put in a kid’s show was a throwaway line in an episode of Ben 10 where Tim Buktu is talking about selling essential oils and he’s like “People have to buy them! They’re essential!” (It was cut)
If the cool, high art projects treat their artists like garbage, those artists burn out and go to the jobs that treat them well. You don’t get better art from abused artists, you get the best, most experienced artists avoiding those projects after they’ve been burned
The way cop shows have made people expect police to care about solving crimes that happen to them is kind of like how medical procedurals make people to expect doctors to do more than just kind of shrug and tell you to lose weight if you come to them with unexplained pain.
This is a hard thing to explain or quantify, but a lot of these Disney movies that come out and then kind of blink out of existence are full of characters that look like no one fell in love with them while they were making the movie.
If you want a great example of how references don’t really help unless you break them down to understand what you’re looking at and why things look the way they do, consider that the infamous Rob Liefeld Cap was pretty clearly directly reffed from pumping-iron-era Schwarzenegger
Cool projects aren’t made better by bad conditions. They have bad conditions because they know that by virtue of being cool and desirable, they won’t have a hard time finding more bodies to throw into the pulp mill when if they grind up all the ones they already have.
I know the Tom Holland character in that new Pixar movie looks like every Chinless big-nosed affable hero everyone in animation has been drawing since 101 Dalmatians, but the female characters actually look like they’re gonna have a decent range of variety
Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing for a new round of layoffs, hitting DC and Cartoon Network, along with other divisions of Warner Bros. Television Group. The layoffs are expected to be comparable to the wave that took place in August.
I promise you almost every person you know working in adult animation has come up with a pitch for a cool, funny series with an visually appealing art style that was thrown in the garbage for not being fast and cheap enough to meet the studio’s standards.
I’ve said pretty much all I want to about AI, but this whole “we can create an animated woman using nothing but a real woman with the exact body type, outfit, and range of motion we want the cartoon to display” has real “they say he carved it himself… from a bigger spoon” energy
There’s no nice way to put this but anyone who sincerely thinks that text generators will perform emotional intelligence because fiction has primed them to overestimate the abilities of “artificial intelligence” is a profoundly stupid person.
This is really sad knowing the woman who kicked off gender reveal parties did it because she’d had so many miscarriages she just wanted to celebrate the personal milestone of making it far enough along for the doctor to be able to assign the baby a sex
If I can offer a piece of art advice it’s that nothing you draw is really under any obligation to be good. But if you want it to be good, you can draw as many janky drawings as it takes to get there (and you will have to, if that’s what you want)
Over Christmas my dad said something like “I’ve noticed that collecting art supplies and making art are two completely different hobbies” and it hit my weak point for massive damage
The funny thing about this is that the scientific community has a really hard time letting go of phrenology, so science centres and aquariums in the 90’s were full of these two brains next to each other and write-ups about how dolphins were probably smarter than we could imagine
So really the answer to “what is alienating conservatives” is “absolutely anything that reminds them of any new information they’ve learned about the world since they were a small child” and it becomes a lot more clear how futile it is to pretend you care about what they want
Kid's Networks basically will not look at your show pitch if the main characters aren't children unless you're trying to sell them on recycling an established superhero franchise.
I’ve personally witnessed Roger shut down transphobia in the booth when he was being given direction to voice a character in a way that was making me (one of the writers) really uncomfortable. Total class act, just said he wasn’t comfortable and wanted to do something else
One of my wildest experiences as an animator was the time I spent weeks doing this realistic, traditionally animated scene of animals scattering from a sabertooth tiger for an educational video, day before the deadline client asks if we can replace a mammoth with a herd of horses
In light of the Tuca and Bertie controversey, I think people outside the animation industry have this idea that there aren't a lot of women making shows because not enough women are pitching or believing in themselves or whatever and blaming "the patriarchy"-
The literature: “Symptoms of ADHD include object permanence issues and forgetting whether you have something if you can’t see it”
My five bottles of mustard:
Funkos took a page from Diamond’s extremely predatory distribution tactics and used it to create a ton of forced scarcity and plastic waste to put the American vinyl toy market in a stranglehold and choke companies trying to make more interesting art figures to death.
I beg and plead every single young person today please, PLEASE, if you have stories living inside you just make them and share them. Don’t worry about professionalism or thinking of webcomics as an industry to be cracked into, please remember anyone can make comics
Auntie is sitting here *fascinated* that webcomics have become “an industry to break into.” Webcomics started out equivalent to zine-making or noodling on your guitar at a party with friends. They eventually evolved into a business model, and now they’re like… pitching a book.
This is one of my favourite functional character design cheats, they came up with that so they wouldn’t need to worry about fitting all of the characters’ wings in every scene all the time
The suspension of disbelief breaking element for me in Game of Thrones isn’t the dragons or zombies or whatever, it’s the idea that people could farm and stockpile enough food and produce to last through a seven year winter
I feel like the idea of
@TheJohnDiMaggio
as a replaceable element of Futurama is part of a wider issue of an industry that doesn’t respect voice actors on the same level as live action actors. You’ll see voice actors who MADE a character treated like no live action actor would be
I just want everyone to appreciate what a phenomenally smart design choice it was in Gargoyles to do that wing-cape thing so they didn’t need to worry about composing shots around a bunch of characters with huge wings blocking everything
I bring this up a lot when I talk about projected audiences, but a lot of media comes down to the “ice cream problem”, you tell a huge group of people they can have free ice cream as long as they all agree on the same flavour, that flavour will always be chocolate or vanilla
For anyone saying “what about the jobs” remember that Walmart pays employees wages too low to live on and manipulates schedules so they can’t receive benefits. Most wal-mart employees need social safety nets to survive, so walmart depends on taxpayers to pay their employees
One time I worked at a studio producing an animated web series for Tom Hanks and he sent an In-N-Out truck over one day to give free burgers to everyone
BREAKING: There are reports from several people who have worked with Tom Hanks, some from as far back as 1994, saying that he is still the nicest man in Hollywood who is as kind and considerate as he is talented.
“If it was so important you wouldn’t have forgotten it” is like the meanest thing you can say to an adhd person who just lost their train of thought, especially if they lost it because you interrupted them to interject a new string of ideas for them to hold onto.
He had this idea that all the media he consumed in his childhood existed in a political vacuum and all the choices made about character ages, races, genders, etc just happened to turn out that way because that’s how they were plucked off the Organic Farm-to-Table Fiction Tree
I think just about every person I know who actually self-reflected and stopped catcalling/making bigoted jokes/bullying/etc did it because one of their friends whose opinion they respect casually said they were being shitty.
This is something I’m kind of heartbroken and at my wit’s end about so I figure there’s no harm doing a last chance bid to twitter to signal boost for help; is there any chance at all that anyone around LA has come across this huge leatherbound sketchbook?
And he seemed to very sincerely believe this, with the complete lack of self awareness to consider that maybe these political conversations were always happening and always influencing creative choices, but he just wasn’t aware of that because he was a six year old at the time.
People in the comments are saying “well if treating a crew like this gets results this good, then we should celebrate it!” But I PROMISE you a crew is always going to give you the best version of what they’re capable of when they’re happy and feel like their work is being valued
Across the Spider-Verse animators say Phil Lord drove them crazy with relentless revision, seeming unfamiliarity with 3D anim, 6 months of indecision and demands to redo finished work 5X. They say no way is Beyond the Spider-Verse coming out in 2024. By me
Lrt: my biggest “art police” pet peeve is the ones talking about how people need to draw eyes in profile the “correct” way, because the realistic way to handle eyes makes most heavily stylized character designs look like dead fish.
Some twitter person giving art advice: “if you draw chubby women with defined cheekbones, jaws, necks and collar bones you’re doing it wrong, only pregnant women look like that”
Counterpoint, fuck you.
When you make a sci-fi or fantasy story it’s important to choose elements of realism to give the audience relatable touchstones to identify with. For example, Star Wars grounds their franchise in realism by making sure anyone who talks to John Boyega falls in love with him.
Anyway this thread was inspired by the endless conversations about “how to handle Superman so everyone is happy” and the fact is you could reprint the exact stories people loved as kids and if they were under the impression they were made in 2022 they wouldn’t like them.
The sad thing is the average person who isn’t neck deep in animation discourse online has no idea this extinction event just happened at turner media and is just like “wow cool new Game of Thrones spin-off”
This feels like some non-issue a bunch of people with nothing better to do echo-chambered at each other on a discord until they convinced themselves it was an actual issue.
Hilda is another great example of how artistic interpretations of a given subject matter will come out very differently when you’re seeing it portrayed through the lens of someone who thinks that subject is beautiful vs someone who does not.
He was trying to make the point that he liked this character in his childhood and enjoyed how she was written, but if the exact same character was written in the exact same way now it would just be “furthering agendas” and it would make the show bad, even if it was the same show.
I used to have a job in a Hydro dam where I had to locate all the first aid kits and restock the bandaids and stuff in them, and never have I felt more like the person who scatters all the health items around for the player to find in a Silent Hill game or whatever
The artists out there working are plenty creative, your issue is with the executives who refuse to greenlight anything we pitch and tell us they’re only interested in remakes of things they already own.
I think it’s extremely funny that Jensen Ackles was talking about how hard he worked to beef up for The Boys and Antony Starr was like “why didn’t you just ask them to put the muscles in the suit?”
But if he saw the exact same things being handled the exact same way today it would be bad and impure because the only reason someone would make those choices these days would be to “pander”
