Chicago. Previously: Biden transition and @harrisonjaime. Writing over at @acitythatworks

Really interesting piece on how University of Chicago professors helped a national network of food banks get surplus food much more efficiently to where it's needed, by creating an internal auction market.

Good intentions matter, but good systems turn generosity into abundance.

Over at @acitythatworks: in the interest of not just being a naysayer, some suggestions on what we *should* be doing in this year's budget.

This is the sort of federal law enforcement much of Chicago’s political and business class can get behind, not masked agents snatching up landscapers and tamale vendors
Chicagoland is seeing one of the largest surges ever in federal prosecution of gun cases, with indictments up nearly 300% from 26 to 102 so far this year, officials say. https://t.co/ynRrx9cxvM

Yeah whoever jacked up tariffs on coffee from Brazil earlier this year must be a real bonehead
🚨TRUMP: “The economy is MY THING.”🚨 @POTUS told me he’s cutting tariffs to bring COFFEE prices down and expects GAS at $2 a gallon. Real relief — not slogans.

Just a disaster for our party. Everyone involved in Dunlap's campaign should be completely and utterly ashamed of themselves.
After much deliberation, I’ve decided not to seek reelection in 2026. I’m confident that were I to run again, I would win. But recent events have made me reconsider whether the good I can do in Congress still outweighs the cost to my family. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished

This is a great take from a great legislator.
A tad bit dramatic, methinks. Developers will still build parking where it makes sense, but cities can’t keep using it as an excuse to block growth. The Trib Ed Board calling People Over Parking “Orwellian” is more than a reach…it’s upside down. Orwell wrote about govt’s. that

Illinois isn't dead yet. This is the civic and political order shaking off the rust and making deep, painful, long-needed reforms and budget reallocations to keep the region moving Honestly: I didn't really think reform on this scale was possible in Illinois Glad to be wrong!

Massachusetts passes major literacy bill 155–0 despite opposition from powerful teachers union: “Districts must use state-approved reading curriculums that include ‘five research-based areas,’ which include not just phonics but also vocab & comprehension, among other focuses”

This is a much, much better plan.
Details on transit revenue confirmed by bill sponsor: - $890 million will come from sales tax on motor fuel - Interest from the road fund will fund transit capital projects - The only tax increase is a 0.25% sales tax increase in the RTA region No delivery or amusement taxes

If Republicans are going to try to rig the game, Democrats in Illinois and across the country must fight back with everything we've got.

This is why I am willing to talk plainly about public safety and order. If we want to reurbanize our cities and build denser and more walkable neighborhoods, we have to take concerns about crime seriously. If we take them seriously, a large part of the NIMBY opposition goes away
In our housing poll, folks also said building new housing increases crime. The spectre of crime influencers so many issues, even as crime is down

“Don’t protest”
“The use of force that I’ve seen has been exemplary — the least amount of force necessary to accomplish the mission,” Bovino told @CBSNews Friday. “If someone strays into a pepper ball, then that’s on them. Don’t protest and don’t trespass.”
