🧵You might’ve heard of restorative justice and how it’s messed up school discipline. But have you heard of PBIS? . For @CityJournal, I investigate how PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is leading to classroom anarchy

A student who threw rocks was rewarded when he stopped, says teacher. There were no consequences for him or "Tiger Tokens" for students whose learning was disrupted.

This rubric is VITAL for understanding what PBIS is really about. Easy to get confused when teachers say PBIS leads to chaos while trainers say schools are just doing it wrong & PBIS still includes discipline. If you’ve heard PBIS isn’t about going easy, see ⬇️.
Schools use a rubric to assess if PBIS is being implemented correctly. Schools that use punitive measures to address student misbehavior get a score of 0. To get the highest score, schools must use “restorative practices”, restrict suspensions, & reduce/eliminate restraint

I do respect when people, like this individual, take a flawed system and make the best of it, but…. My job is to look at how policies are being used broadly. There is a Center on PBIS, funded by the Department of Education. They created the Tiered Fidelity Inventory, which is
PBIS works when the plan is thorough, implemented well, and utilizes consequences, including exclusion. Restorative practices DO NOT work. My system is proven strong and effective, but as soon as admin are bullied out of giving consequences, it's over.

“Holistic review” also sustains a lucrative industry for college admissions consultants. In a recent NYT article, one consultant apparently charges up to $750K to help students navigate the process
If you *only* used SAT to admit to elite colleges, share of admits from top 1% income falls 15.8% → 9.9% and representation from <$200k rises by +8.8%, with no reduction in post-college outcomes. It's 'holistic review' and 'ban SAT' policy that allows the most wealthy and
