The great contradiction of Chris Minns' view of multiculturalism is that it is on the one hand this fantastic virtue but on the other requires all sorts of rules and restrictions on speech and gatherings and behaviour to keep us all from killing each other.

The gun thing is so impossibly cynical, in one fell swoop the side of politics that normalised river to the sea bridge marches etc has taken the focus off Islamic radicalism, migration, assimilation, etc, and in the process set the 'right' up to be the straw man enemy of reform.

Why is it impossible to build nice things like this in Australia? There would be a lot less NIMBYism if local development proposals didn’t come with a punitive edge of enforced ugliness.

I argue that the real crisis facing Europe is that remilitarization requires identity, purpose, and legitimacy & these foundations are eroding. Eastern and Central Europe have begun to rebuild them under the pressure of war. The rest of Europe has not. https://t.co/ee3ZRxYacA

There’s a new serif in town.
The latest strike in the Trump administration's war on "woke": @SecRubio orders the State Dept. to abandon using the Calibri typeface and to go back to Times New Roman. Blinken had State adopt Calibri since a sans serif typeface is easier for people who have a hard time reading.

A recent newspaper report suggests Sydney is to grow by one million people over the next two decades. Does anyone remember us having a discussion over whether that was a good idea?

Nuclear energy is still regarded with skepticism. But nuclear power’s critics wildly overstate its dangers, and preserving and expanding this energy source is essential to a just green transition.
