My book At the Edge of Empire comes out May 28. It's an epic work of memoir and reportage spanning 80 years, from my father in Mao's army to China's rise today. A most anticipated book for 2024 — Foreign Policy and Publisher's Weekly. Pre-order here:
UPDATE: NYT obtained emails between
@NPRKelly

Stunning story by
@peterbakernyt
about powerful Texas politicians who went to the Middle East in 1980 on a secret mission orchestrated by one of them: to get Iran to hold onto US hostages to help swing election to Reagan, who was running against Carter.
Pompeo was on the phone call where Trump signaled to Zelensky that he was withholding Javelins from Ukraine — which had been fighting a war with Russia since 2014 — unless Zelensky gave him political dirt on Hunter and Joe Biden.
This is notable — and a key marker for those who say Trump’s actions help China: The Chinese embassy in the US has retweeted Trump’s fake claim of election fraud. For autocrats, Trump is helping delegitimize democracy and eroding US standing. Putin has repeated his arguments too.
Xinhua released a longer readout of the Biden-Xi call. It indicates no change in China’s stance. Xi didn't suggest a role China could play in ending the war. And he used a favorite phrase of his to cast blame on the US: "Let he who tied the bell on the tiger’s neck take it off.”

This is a photo of the Hong Kong protests, not of the US. And many HK protesters hoped Trump would stand up for them against Xi — but Trump actually told Xi in a June 2019 call that he & his aides would stay silent on Hong Kong. As recounted by Bolton & also reported last year.

Amazing video that shows the spirit of Hong Kong. What happened in Beijing on June 3 and 4, 1989? A government sent troops into the site of a peaceful protest. The troops opened fire, killing hundreds or thousands.
Holy shit this was Hong Kong yesterday, at the vigil for Tiananmen Square. Despite police banning the vigil.
Thank you for the inspiration Hong Kong.

The walls go up in a new Green Zone. I saw this in Iraq, and now it’s in my hometown of Washington. A militant mob incited by the American president to end US democracy through violence brought this. But they failed. Residents of DC stand against the people they call terrorists.
Pence wrote a WSJ op-ed that says journalists have exaggerated the severity of the pandemic. He didn’t mention the 120,000 or so Americans who have died — more than in any other nation. Did editors question the omission? People put up this banner near his DC home earlier.
This is wrong. There were no “violent clashes.” The police fired tear gas to clear the area for a Trump photo-op, and the protesters fled as the police advanced. The protesters didn’t fight back. I was there. And that’s what you see in this video.
Big story: US officials have quietly discussed a Russian military intel unit offering bounties to Taliban & other Afghans to kill US, UK & allied troops. Some have collected. Trump likes Putin. What'll he do? By

Former active US military officers are noting that Lt. Col. Tulsi Gabbard has been amplifying Kremlin conspiracy theories that are anti-US & anti-Ukraine. China has also been openly amplifying the theories in recent days, using powerful megaphones:

In a Fox interview,
@SecPompeo
peddles a new conspiracy theory involving Obama, Hunter Biden and military aid. This insinuation makes zero sense. Pompeo, the top US diplomat, doesn’t seem to care anymore about trying to establish a reputation as a straight talker.
US intelligence failure on Israel-Gaza: Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said this just 8 days ago at a talk in DC: “The Middle East Region Is Quieter Today Than It Has Been in Two Decades”
US politicians could try getting out of their bubbles and looking at how Asian nations — including liberal democracies — contained the virus without destroying their economies. Also, plenty of grandkids in the US want their grandparents around.
Pompeo’s official response to
@NPRKelly
interview doesn’t deny her account of his bullying & cursing. This is an attack on news organizations from the top US diplomat, someone who is supposed to defend press freedoms. It’s obvious he’s playing to an audience of one — Trump.
@NPRKelly
Pompeo also undermines his credibility on the facts of the episode in the statement. There is little chance
