As PM Harper's former top justice advisor, I used to agree with @jkenney and @fordnation that supervised consumption sites are a bad idea. I was wrong. It isn’t illicit drugs that are killing people, it’s our lack of compassion. Here's why...

So let's make sure I got this: there are people who use drugs who are ASKING for safer supply drugs on the street and are even willing to pay for it Their other option is toxic contaminated street drugs - which is what is actually killing people

Justin Trudeau said that spending tax dollars to give free hard drugs to addicts was "safe." Now we know addicts are reselling Trudeau's drugs and using the proceeds to buy deadly fentanyl. My common sense plan - give addicts rehab, not free drugs, to bring our loved ones…

@PierrePoilievre Mr. Poilievre says today his goal is to "bring our loved ones home DRUG-FREE" Indeed, his policy would bring many people home but DECEASED due to his opposition to life-saving harm reduction measures His primary goal is abstinence - not to save lives

FACT CHECK: If you watch the video @PierrePoilievre shared to the end it shows a “76% DECREASE in mortality in persons receiving prescriptions for opioids” Toxic contaminated street drugs are the poison killing people. As are policies of ignorance.

The theory of safe supply: give people taxpayer-funded “safe” drugs so they don’t use dangerous ones. The reality: they sell the “safe” drugs (sometimes to kids) to buy more potent ones that kill them. Enough. More treatment—not more poison.

My commentary in today's @globeandmail : "Mr. Poilievre’s tough-on-crime messaging has long been a winning formula for politicians, but research shows that hiring more police and sending more people to prison does NOT lower crime rates."

"ACCESS DENIED" #Alberta just refused my Access to Information request to release the number of people dying from unregulated drugs If they hadn't just released this info publicly, I'd be filing a complaint with the Commissioner and going to media with their Orwellian…

If we want to make criminal justice policy based on rhymes, a more accurate slogan is "with jail we fail" Incarcerating people increases reoffending. People leave worse off than when they entered. Status quo isn't working either. We need a totally new approach.

Good to see @Twitter flagged @PierrePoilievre video which uses homeless people as props and spreads lies & stigma against people who use drugs They should add @CommunityNotes too since his claim safe supply is killing people is patently false, as shown by the BC Coroners Service

It's heart wrenching to see the hatred & judgment against people who use drugs A study of 14 countries (including Canada) found people who use drugs had the highest level of stigma of any class of individual—worse even than those with leprosy. Let's push back.

The @nationalpost makes mistake of thinking there are only 2 options: "soft-on-crime" or "tough-on-crime" - neither work As I show in "Indictment" , we need a new transformative justice system that prevents crime, addresses root causes, reduces recidivism and is evidence-based

Unconscionable. Cruel. Wrong. This appalling #Barrie Ontario bylaw would make it illegal to give food on city property to people experiencing homelessness

Welp. They're doing it. #Barrie City Council are set to pass a bylaw this Wednesday night that criminalizes providing survival items to unhoused people on public property, with zero public engagement. It's undemocratic and it's mean. This is not how we take care of each other.

Tragically, so much for the "Alberta model" "Alberta and Calgary are experiencing the worst drug poisoning death rates on record ... amid a push from UCP members to end public funding for supervised consumption sites."

EMS data is out. Drug poisoning calls are at their highest level since November 2021. Only 2 times has it been higher since surveillance began. Be very careful if you are using. It’s bad out there.

What a ham-fisted PR statement. They complain that Danielle Smith's now infamous "Nazi" comments were taken out of context, then DELETE the full podcast that would give that context. There is no context to justify what she said.
