After 5 years of research at @broadinstitute and leading a team at @whitelab, I am starting my dream Ph.D. in France. I am very excited I will be designing novel #GraphNeuralNetworks and working on #GeneRegulatoryNetworks inference from single-cell data using foundation models.

Ultimately, the delay in care ended up being only a few minutes early on and did not affect the outcome. Nonetheless, it was an unexpected (and perhaps avoidable?) experience to find myself arguing with the crew about EMK access in front of other passengers. 3/.

There was no automatic epinephrine injector (EpiPen) in the EMK, only glass ampules with epinephrine which I would be Okay using but would take longer so I opted to use my own EpiPen. 2/.

I see that my tweet generated some attention, so I want to clarify a few things. The sick person was in no apparent distress initially, and by the time signs of anaphylaxis became more apparent, the EMK was already open and available to me. 1/.

A medical emergency happened when I was on a Turkish Airlines flight, and the attendants asked for an MD. I stepped forward and after assessing the patient asked for some items which were in the “doctor’s box”, only to be told that they are not allowed to open 1/.

Perhaps something to think about, Turkish Airlines?. P.S. I later remembered that I had a copy of my state license scanned in my phone and showed it to the crew.

Meanwhile, the patient was having anaphylaxis (a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction). I understand the desire to make sure that only MDs get access to the medical box, but there is no good excuse for delaying medical care in a potential emergency.

the box without seeing “proper MD identification or license”. I tried to explain that MDs typically don’t carry copies of their licenses on them, and, after some convincing they let me access the box. 2/.

Stay tuned for the third paper from @ParalkarLab which will describe a detailed protocol for measuring rRNA abundance and transcription rate by FISH-flow! Congratulations again to the whole team!.

In a follow up paper by @Subin_S_George we share custom-build genomes for protein mapping to rDNA from standard NGS experiments, which will serve as an important and accessible tool for anyone interested in rRNA transcription.

rRNAs are transcribed from ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeats, the most intensively transcribed loci in the genome. Due to their repetitive nature, there is a lack of genome assemblies suitable for rDNA...

However, mapping of transcription factor binding to rDNA is not straightforward: rDNA is composed of hundreds of nearly-identical repeats which are not included in the standard genome builds.

Using CEBPA as a case study, we show that TF binding to rDNA facilitates recruitment of Polymerase 1 and regulates rRNA transcription.

Congratulations to @ParalkarLab on the second paper in the rRNA transcription saga. I am very happy to have contributed to this important work. In the first paper (Anthony at al., @MolecularCell) we show that hematopoietic transcription factors bind to cognate motifs in rDNA.
