In future work we hope that we can use some of these metabolites to rescue antibiotic- associated neutropenia, making antibiotics safer to use.

Stool metabolomics revealed a number of differentially abundant metabolites including members of the uridine synthesis pathway.

Amazingly, those who developed neutropenia had depletion of a specific class of microbiota: Lachnospiraceae. These bacteria have been reported to impact outcomes from HSCT and to be significant producers of short chain fatty acids.

We did not find correlation with any particular antibiotic or infection type.

Patients on longer courses of antibiotics, especially IV antibiotics, and with ICU stays were more likely to get neutropenia.

Sure enough, 17% of prospectively enrolled subjects developed some degree of neutropenia.

We enrolled pediatric patients @TexasChildrens and @VUMCchildren and collected stool samples at the start and end of prolonged antibiotic courses (2 weeks or more) 💩.

Another piece of the puzzle in our quest to discover how interferons disrupt HSC quiescence and promote differentiation.

Instead @MarcusAFlorez found that BST2 affects lipid raft formation and promotes ERK signaling.

Since BST2 is a surface protein we thought it might work by affecting HSC niche localization…. But not so.
