In future work we hope that we can use some of these metabolites to rescue antibiotic- associated neutropenia, making antibiotics safer to use.

Amazingly, those who developed neutropenia had depletion of a specific class of microbiota: Lachnospiraceae. These bacteria have been reported to impact outcomes from HSCT and to be significant producers of short chain fatty acids.

We did not find correlation with any particular antibiotic or infection type.

Patients on longer courses of antibiotics, especially IV antibiotics, and with ICU stays were more likely to get neutropenia.

Sure enough, 17% of prospectively enrolled subjects developed some degree of neutropenia.
