As a consultant doctor rota'd to cover for residents should they strike next week I'm kinda embarrassed the Health Secretary thinks so little of me & my senior colleagues who have the most training & experience that we'd endager patients if we stepped in to cover the strikes.

You had a month to negotiate & failed to do so @wesstreeting. It is very convenient to blame resident doctors for your failures as Health Secretary. The NHS is not a sweat shop & doctors deserve fair. You promised pay restoration when you were in Opposition. Now deliver it!
Strikes will certainly disrupt operations and scans for patients. It is shameful that you and BMA leaders treat that so lightly - as if it is consequence free. That’s our family, friends and loved ones waiting longer when they’ve waited too long as it is.

There is no right time to strike. The winter crisis is now a perpetual crisis. The real threat to patient safety is chronic understaffing and underfunding of our healthcare system. If we want to fix the NHS and deliver the care patients deserve, we must fix retention of staff.
