@OrrinHatch
For me the most moving part of the Notorious RBG documentary was you: telling the nominee that you disagreed with almost everything she candidly said she believed, but that you thought she deserved the spot and would vote for her.
My mother died.
I didn't expect to write this on Twitter, but her ballot didn't arrive on time for her to fill it out. So because she can't, please, in her memory, vote for
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
, all blue, all the way. Do everything that you can.
People.
What does Bernie have that
#PresidentElizabethWarren
doesn’t?
—A Y chromosome
What does
@ewarren
have that Bernie doesn’t?
—a history of getting it done.
I love Bernie’s commitment & heart & that he sounds like my family. But don’t vote out of fear. Choose her.
@bariweiss
You embarrass me. You consistently refuse to use the power of our tradition to fight injustice. I’m stopping to honor
#George
Floyd but I’ll be back.
@MoiraDonegan
Adoptive parent here. That Barrett, an adoptive parent, would say this, is chilling: it is well documented that the trauma is not only the mother's, but the child's.
@yashar
The problem with the Ethnic Studies letter and with so much of the reaction to 10/7 is that they think what Hamas did is an expression of Palestinian liberation.
As if Hamas cares.
@yumcoconutmilk
I feel like this about the Buy Nothing Groups, which have rigid rules and geographic boundaries that result in people exchanging among their own class, instead of redistributing.
There is a teaching in Judaism that if a wedding and a funeral procession meet at a crossing, the funeral procession must wait for the wedding to pass, because life always takes precedence over death.
I believe that is the lesson Noa Argamani was following when she danced. +
@bariweiss
Bari, it would be generous to call me 40+. We grew up in the same community. You went to private schools; I went to Linden and Allderdice. We both went to elite women's colleges. You were bat mitzvah at Tree of Life; I went to Dor Hadash.

Someone wrote about the Republicans hatred of Bill Clinton that they could not stand it that he was smarter and more talented and more charming than they could ever be. Then along came Obama, and it was worse.
They are made of envy.

As a realtor you should want people to have houses. If you’re just encouraging people to buy them as investments so you can make money, you’re participating in something evil.

No need to use that emoji. If you’re not quarantining and you’re eating inside with a lot of people, we know you’re giving us the finger.
This is your regularly scheduled reminder that in Judaism the life of the mother is paramount, abortion is permitted, and a ban on abortion is an infringement on our religious liberty.

When the minority imposes a restrictive law on the majority, and that law is encased in and founded upon religious doctrine, you are now officially living in a Theocratic state. Welcome to living under Taliban courtesy of the Supreme Court

That ship sailed with Bush v Gore, in which justices selected by the candidate’s father stopped a vote count at the behest of the Fl sec of state, who was appointed by the candidate’s brother— the governor—and was also the candidate’s campaign chair.
@BenBonnema
This is a good letter (especially the offer to shop for non-maskers, who if they really have a condition that requires them not to mask should be delighted with your idea).
Trader Joe's was wrong.
I'm just going to say it: if America weren't racist LeVar Burton would be the permanent host. You know there were executives sitting and fretting about potential lost market share/advertising revenue in MAGA land, without grasping how beloved LeVar Burton is.
So a relative died, and the funeral is being live-streamed on FB. I called the funeral home to see if there was going to be Zoom access, because my dad can do Zoom but not Facebook, and they said they stopped Zoom because white supremacists crashed people's funerals.
I participated in the South African boycott. You know what I don't remember? Boycotting organizations of SAs trying to end apartheid. Bc the goal was to end apartheid. The goal of BDS isn't to end the occupation, it's to end Israel. Boycotting Standing Together made this clear.
Jewish & Palestinian *actual* activists from
@omdimbeyachad
have been escorting aid conveys, day after day, into Gaza. Facing down Kahanists. But they’re Israeli citizens. So none of that is relevant. Or as meaningful “activism” as boycotting a folk band from Wisconsin

The _opinion_of a senator— who can easily amplify his position without the mouthpiece of the Times— is only news if it is REPORTED as NEWS: challenged, questioned, placed in historical and legal context.
@BradMossEsq
@MollyJongFast
I will never believe that people voted for him for anything other than sheer racism and misogyny. No one could possibly believe that he was fit to serve. He is truly one of the most repulsive humans ever to walk the earth.
And yes, I'm including 2016. He didn't hide it.
@weijia
@CBSNews
So does this mean he did not have it when he debated Biden? Because honestly, that's all I care about. I want Biden to be safe. Trump doesn't deserve my concern. I didn't wish COVID on him but I'm not worried for him. He did this to himself and to the whole country.
@bariweiss
I know that you have spoken out against the murder of
#GeorgeFloyd
. But when
@nyt
allows a senator to call for military forces to quell protests by force, and you defend that as “all the news,” that is a moral failure.
@pendicott70

Barrett never should have accepted the nomination, because judges are to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, and accepting a nomination from that man, under those circumstances, at that time, when he bragged she would protect him, shows she has no integrity whatsoever.

(I live in a 2 br apartment and have a decent job -- I'm damned if I'm giving my stuff to people in a 3000 sq ft house with a carriage house because we share a zip code.)

If the
@AnneFrankCenter
says there's a problem with your Holocaust book, maybe you shouldn't come back for part II, and maybe you shouldn't be promoting it (even to say it's controversial).
You know this was not a widely-used expression among Jewish Zionists?
If you don’t, you shouldn’t be writing about this subject.
Also, to be perfectly literal about it, Columbus could NOT have used this expression because the Spanish were not a people without a land.
@MollyJongFast
I get really mad when I think about Amy Coney Barrett & her meager qualifications & her ordinary legal mind & the way she was rammed down our throats & her lack of integrity & her contempt for birth mothers & adopted children.

Thinking about when my 9th grade public school social studies teacher asked me whether I was a Jew first or an American first — but didn’t ask the 18 Christians in the class the same question.
The idea that Will Smith can't show his face at the Oscars for ten years while Mel Gibson is still making movies = proof positive that the Jews don't control Hollywood.

Well — when it’s a choice between the fetus and the life of the mother, fetus wins.
When it’s a choice between a child and a gun, gun wins.
It’s like Rock Paper Scissors but really gruesome.

John Lewis served 17 terms in Congress.
Constituents should be able to elect good representatives over and over.
The issue is money. Fix that and the incumbency isn't such a problem.
Antisemites are responsible for being antisemites. People who don’t already hate Muslims didn’t start after 9/11, and people who don’t already hate Jews (or Israelis) didn’t start because of Netanyahu. He’s just confirmation bias for people eager to hate us.
i'm jewish and if i had a nickel for every time i've said netanyahu's horrific and genocidal behavior is a direct cause of increasing antisemitism over the last few years i'd be rich
Before people lose their ___, I’d like them to consider that Fetterman is from Allegheny County, where 11 Jews were gunned down at Tree of Life, and that whether you like Israel or not, there was barely a DAY of even sadness on the left for 1400 people butchered by Hamas.

It’s illegal. Sorry. There’s no reason to suspect people of being in Al Qaeda, unless we’re now going to ask white men if they’re in the Klan or other supremacist terrorist groups.

Tell me what you're talking about. I'm a lawyer -- they have determined there is no right to privacy. Why should he have any?
Maybe he can explain to his daughters why women hate him.
Mesmerized by the scores of ex-Bernie supporters who ditched him as soon as they noticed he was a Zionist, which he never hid, and despite their former adulation can’t take 5 seconds to think about how his Zionism is expressed and what that might say about their assumptions.

You should be out there with your colleagues, who have a clearer sense of right and wrong, who know the power your paper wields and want it to do better. “Fitness” matters, as we have seen over the past few years.
Tzedek, Tzedek tirdof, Bari.
@RebeccMcLaugh
What kind of person uses the holiest day of someone else’s year to be a tourist and to pass judgment on them? I feel sick. You violated us. This is utterly vile. I try to be measured on Twitter but sometimes people need to be told what they are.
White Ashkenazim: just don’t. Don’t do this.
It is against Halacha for you to question someone’s Jewishness. It’s just bad manners. If you’re asking bc the person is Black, it’s racist.
Unless you see someone waving around a crucifix or talking about Jesus, just don’t.
@JRubinBlogger
I’ve followed you for almost eight years— I thought you were heroic. But Biden’s post-debate performance has been fine and it’s not about proving the media wrong, it’s about not letting them torch another election.
I hate it when people with no skin in the game dunk on Palestinians and Israelis working for peace. I get it, you hate Jews/Arabs. You want total liberation/conquest.
Play Risk and get out. People have suffered unbearable losses and they’re not your game pieces.
@dominowski
@mkraju
I’m pretty confident Merrick Garland hates fascism to his core. He’s just measured enough not to have a tantrum, unlike Kavanaugh, for instance.
May he make them weep that they didn’t put him on the Court.
The privilege of white Europeans looking down their noses at what they call an “ethnostate” when their countries still follow a Christian calendar floors me, especially when that ethnostate has more diversity than their own countries.
Jwitter.
I am never vetted as a Jew (except by Twitter evangelicals) bc I’m Caucasian, have brown hair and brown eyes & a stereotypically Jewish name. But all you vetters: how do you know I’m halakhically Jewish? Why don’t you vet me? Check your assumptions. Stop gatekeeping.
This.
I would join a peace movement in a heartbeat.
I would join a movement for Palestinian liberation that wasn’t also a movement for Jewish erasure (and don’t but JVP me, people can disagree, Jews do that).
But there isn’t one, here.
Smarter people than me will write about how we got here, but one thing that’s striking about the university protests is the absence of an actual peace movement. There are pro-Israel and pro-Palestine groups, but what you don’t see is a broad movement for a full ceasefire, more
@BeschlossDC
I hate the Melania garden. It's cold and spiteful and lifeless, like the whole sick family. We elected dead people.
Is there truth to the reports that came out that the changes were planned before her? Or is that the load of garbage it appears to be, to any rational observer?
@motheroftheses
I loved the strategy that women staffers in the Obama administration employed of immediately repeating what other women had said, giving them credit by name, so the men couldn’t do that.
@realgirl_fieri
Not sure this qualifies: "Now that my child saw that your child nailed it at her bat mitzvah, he's not worried AT ALL. He knows if she could do it, ANYone can."
Reader, she still has all her teeth and her nose.
Cut it out, kids.
A) this is not the way
B) this lays bare the narcissism in this movement. Gaza is a horror. But these people went about their lives as other horrors took place and now at the end of her life they harass this woman.
WATCH: Susanne DeWitt, an 89 year-old Holocaust survivor who was arrested and sent to Dachau Concentration Camp at age 4, was repeatedly heckled by demonstrators as she spoke in favor of the City of Berkeley's Holocaust Remembrance Day proclamation.
@elizaorlins
Actually, this 👆 is a bad tweet.
She isn't hysterical.
She makes a calculated decision to call the police and pretend that Christian Cooper is attacking her.
She is a privileged white person and her behavior was considered and monstrous.
There are plenty of colonizers who ally with Palestinians, to offload their guilt onto Jews.
Jews returning as refugees to the only place they ever had political autonomy, to join Jews who never left, are not colonizers.
It can still be terrible for the other people there.
I don’t like it when people spitefully say Palestine doesn’t exist.
I don’t like it when they call Israel “the Zionist entity” or “Isntreal.”
And I don’t like it when people write, “cry harder.”
@aziz0nomics
I’m tired of artwork that depicts Palestinians as dark and Israelis as blond. The unspoken message is that Palestinians are indigenous and Jews are European. It’s false. There are blond Palestinians and dark Jews. It’s a false construct.
My mother had MS and in the last decade of her life she wore Depends. I don’t think I am shaming her by writing this. I’m doing it because i despise Trump and think surely all of you can find more damning things to say about him than that he wears diapers.
Ableism isn’t cool.

I am no flaming lefty. I don’t get off on being woke. I’m a pragmatic progressive— I know what I want the world to look like and I try to make it better, but I am comfortable and hopeful voting for people who aren’t my ideological soulmates.
When white Ashkenazim sign onto a service led by two black rabbis and post in comments, “we are here to be uncomfortable” instead of “Shabbat shalom,” they are intruding. If you’re uncomfortable, keep it to yourselves.
I grew up with the narrative that "Hitler lost, because we are still here." I told this to an Irish-Catholic colleague in grad school -- who studied German history -- and he stared at me in disbelief: "He destroyed European Jewry." This thread is such a gift. And heartbreaking.
It's impossible not to wonder if his goal is for all of them to die, so he doesn't have to answer to their families anymore, so he can flatten everything, so he can continue to lay waste.
@juliesauls901
You told us that he’d pass the most consequential package of legislation since the Great Society? Or that he’d get dozens of women and people of color appointed as federal judges? That’s great. I’m gonna keep voting for people you hate.
@DavidAFrench
Did you know he hoarded Nazi artifacts? Did you know that he was essentially purchasing a Supreme Court justice? Could you please explain, as a NYT columnist, how owning a justice squares with "abhor[ing] tyranny"?
