NYC public defender since ‘09. Former candidate for Manhattan District Attorney. Appeared on Survivor & Amazing Race. She•Her. 欧美玲. Fueled by rage at injustice.
Whenever I post anything about the cops, my replies are constantly filled with people who are like "NOT ALL COPS." So l tried to put together a cogent analogy to help them understand why it IS ALL COPS. 🧵/x
Lori Laughlin was just sentenced to 2 months in jail.
Earlier this year, the Manhattan DA recommended one year jail for a man who stole cough syrup and toothpaste from a Duane Reade.
There are two systems of justice in this county and this is yet another example.
Kyle Rittenhouse, accused of murder, has been released on $2M cash bail.
As a public defender, I represented teenagers unable to post $500-$5000 cash bail for things like theft or drug sale.
Money bail doesn’t make us safer. It just rewards the wealthy and well-connected.
Roger Stone was just sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison.
A man I represented is currently serving a sentence of 3-6 years in prison for stealing a jacket.
Riley Williams, accused of stealing Pelosi's laptop, was given permission to leave house arrest to attend a Renaissance fair.
As a public defender, I represented a teenager who wasn't given permission to leave jail to go to his dad's funeral.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
This is serious. Happened today in Manhattan. As a public defender for over a decade, I have tried cases where the Manhattan DA uses a "hysterical 911 call" as categorical evidence of guilt. Usually there's no video like this to refute it. (1/4)
Capitol riot suspect Eric Munchel, dubbed "zip tie guy," to be released from jail pending trial.
As a public defender, I represented a client charged with stealing detergent. Held in on $3000 bail he could not afford.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
Riley June Williams is accused of stealing Pelosi's laptop in the US Capitol attack to sell to Russia and was released from custody.
As a public defender, I represented a man held in on bail for stealing cough syrup and toothpaste from Duane Reade.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
“If Mitch McConnell isn’t going to honor RBG’s final wish, we will. We will. And we have to.” Thank you,
@AOC
. For your voice. For your fight. Tonight. And always.
All the 16-year-old kids (mostly people of color) I’ve represented who ended up in jail because they were tried as adults in NY are going to be thrilled that Republicans think what you do as a child should not have a negative impact on your future opportunities.
PSA FROM YOUR FRIENDLY PUBLIC DEFENDER: DO NOT PROVIDE YOUR CHILDREN’S DNA TO A DATABASE!
For that matter, this applies to everyone: DO NOT EVER VOLUNTARILY GIVE A DNA SAMPLE.
Texas is sending public school students home with DNA kits designed to help their parents identify their children "in case of an emergency."
After the Uvalde shooting, many parents now feel even more anxious about sending their children to school.
Just a quick note to any rogue federal agents planning on operating Portland-style in Manhattan without ID, or uniform, or (for all we know) warrants: the statute of limitations on kidnapping will not have expired by the time I take office.
"This will fall on the poorest women in our country. This will fall on young women who have been abused, who are victims of incest."
Please watch this video.
@ewarren
is channeling the rage we are all feeling right now. Thank you,

Just heard the blue angels flying over NYC from my apartment. $80,000 was spent on this “thank you” to
#EssentialWorkers
. How about we buy them masks or get them hazard pay instead?
#StandWithEssentialWorkers
Trump is reportedly considering a pardon for the Trump Organization's CFO.
A friendly reminder from your future Manhattan DA: Presidents can’t pardon ANYONE for New York State crimes.
I’m just leaving night court and my heart hurts. So many clients came through tonight on the most ridiculous charges. One was literally STEALING A LOAF OF BREAD. Straight out of Les Mis. The Manhattan DA’s office asked for 30 days jail. For a loaf of bread. I can’t.
#injustice
Our president just said: "I think it's high time that we have public defenders being paid the same as prosecutors." Thank you,
@JoeBiden
.
No Malarkey Detected.
Prosecutors asked to increase bail by $200,000 for Kyle Rittenhouse after alleged violation of bail conditions.
I had a client who used a cane arrive at noon (not 9:30AM) on a snowy day. The judge ordered a warrant and wanted to remand him (NO BAIL).
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
People are sitting on Rikers Island on the basis of nothing more than an accusation (like in this video!) with the added risk of contracting COVID-19. So, we can call out these “Karens," but also we need a Manhattan DA who is committed to real reform. I will be that DA. (4/4)
Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to 14 days in jail. Last week, the Manhattan DA recommended 30 days jail for stealing a loaf of bread. A few months ago, Manhattan DA recommended one year jail for a man who stole cough syrup and toothpaste from a Duane Reade.
#injustice
If your response to seeing a Black man shot over and over in the back is to say “he should’ve followed instructions,” you are the problem. "Not complying" with an officer is NOT punishable by death under any circumstances, let alone an extra-judicial execution.
#BlackLivesMatter
.
@NYCSchools
just released a statement that says the cost of the legislature's class size proposal will be $500M/year (for K-5 alone) and will force them to "defund several critical programs" if it passes
What happens: White lady calls the cops on Black man. Cops believe her. He gets arrested and then arraigned. Outrageous bail gets set. His family cannot afford to buy his freedom. He gets sent to Rikers Island, where he sits for any number of days, months, or years. (2/4)
I am vaccinated and boosted and regularly tested for COVID-19, and I just tested positive.
I’m feeling fine and so grateful for the protection my vaccines continue to provide!
Eventually the case resolves in some way--gets dismissed or he takes a plea to the charge or a lesser offense to get out because he's threatened with doing serious time. Meanwhile, he's potentially lost his job, his home, his children. Right now, it is even worse. (3/4)
As everyone talks about a case the Manhattan DA is not prosecuting, I’m working night court representing people who are being prosecuted for possession of a crack pipe or theft of salami.
And the Manhattan DA continues to ask for bail for poor people.
TWO SYSTEMS OF JUSTICE.
PSA from your friendly public defender: You STILL have a right to remain silent. Use it.
DO NOT TALK TO THE COPS.
ASK FOR A LAWYER THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP.
The NYPD deleted this tweet, but the fact is they proudly displayed having caught people who took diapers and cough medicine.
Basic. Necessities.
This is not public safety. This is cruelty on display.
Rick Gates was just sentenced to 45 days in jail (to be served on weekends!) & 3 yrs probation for lying to the FBI.
Indigent client (who happens to be a person of color) recently got 2-4 years in prison for stealing a jacket.
There is no justice in our criminal legal system.
Today, Trump Org CFO Weisselberg is being sentenced to five months jail.
On a five month sentence, he'll serve approximately 100 days.
As a public defender in Manhattan, I represented a man who was sentenced to 3-6 years (and will serve 1500+ days) for stealing a jacket.
Kim Potter, the former police officer charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, was released on bond after less than 6 hours in jail.
As a public defender, I’ve represented clients held for longer for sleeping on a park bench.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
Derek Chauvin was just sentenced to 270 months (22.5 years) for the murder of George Floyd.
As a public defender, I represented a man who was facing life in prison for stealing a jacket.
I want to talk about how junk science ruins innocent lives.
The criminal legal system is overwhelmed by junk science.
IT IS AN OUTRAGE.
If you're not deeply disturbed by what's going on, I need you to pay close attention.
Let me explain. 🧵/x
I can’t tell you how many clients of mine have been arrested by the NYPD & prosecuted by Manhattan DA, Cy Vance for felony failure to register. They’re almost all poor people of color, who sometimes only missed registration because they changed shelters.
This is my best friend in the world. I’m an auntie to her son and daughter. We’ve been best friends for over 20 years and I don’t know what I would do without her. She is so brave. But I’m not. I’m scared. For her. For her babies. For everyone. Stay home. Get her PPE.
#GeMePPE
My babies are too young to read this now. And they’d barely recognize me in my gear. But if they lose me to COVID I want them to know Mommy tried really hard to do her job.
#GetMePPE
#NYC
Weisselberg, Trump CFO, getting a plea of five months with no cooperation from
@ManhattanDA
.
As a public defender, I wish you could see the things the Manhattan DA refuses to offer a sentence of five months for....
TWO. SYSTEMS. OF. JUSTICE. CONTINUE. WITH. CY. VANCE. 2.0.
The brutal, horrific, intentional murder of
#AhmaudArbery
was a modern day lynching. To call this anything else is to excuse and enable white supremacy. Not sharing the video, but think it’s a moral imperative to speak out.
Periodic reminder from your friendly career public defender: no matter who you are and no matter what you have done or NOT done: DO. NOT. TALK. TO. THE. COPS.
As a public defender, I represented a 16yo for whom I had to beg a judge for release (with escorts, in handcuffs) to go to his dad's funeral.
Meanwhile, someone accused of participating in the insurrection may get to go on a bonding retreat in Mexico.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
One of the Capitol insurrection defendants who was granted pretrial release, Jenny Cudd, has asked the court for permission to travel to Riviera Maya, Mexico this month for a prepaid "work related bonding retreat" (she has to get a judge's permission to leave the country)
This is a high school student in Camden, AR, who was held in a chokehold by a uniformed police officer to the point where his feet left the ground. His offense? He was arguing with another student. This is unacceptable. Spread the word.
HOLY SHIT. Working night court tonight and I just watched Judge Melissa Lewis set bail on an HIV+ trans woman whose life is now in danger at Rikers, even over the Manhattan DA’s recommendation for supervised release. Absolutely abhorrent.
As a public defender, I fight against a cruel and unjust system that’s rigged against Black, Brown, & lower-income folks, & gives special treatment to those like Harvey Weinstein.
If we want to change our system, we must change our DA.
I’m running to be your next Manhattan DA.
BREAKING NEWS: The judge has ordered Officer Daniel Pantaleo be fired for the death of
#EricGarner
. Pantaleo should have been fired years ago. He should’ve been prosecuted. He killed Eric Garner. On video. While Garner said I CAN’T BREATHE. 11 TIMES.
#FirePantaleo
#icantbreathe
Reminder: The presidential pardon power does NOT apply to crimes under Georgia state law.
That's one more reason to care who your state and local prosecutors are.
Let's not forget that in 2011 Manhattan DA, Cy Vance, argued for leniency for Epstein. My clients (mostly poor people of color) never receive the same treatment. This is exactly the two-tiered system of justice that should not exist.
#JeffreyEpstein
I refuse to RT the doctored video of Nancy Pelosi or any of the Fox commentators trying to legitimize the video, but if you didn’t respect

before for her decision not to appear on Fox, I bet you do now.

I’m shaking right now. On the subway home from Brooklyn, I just witnessed the NYPD violently remove a disabled man from the train because he was suspected of riding between train cars.
This is what they’re using their ten BILLION dollar budget for.
THIS. IS. NOT. SAFETY.
It just keeps happening. I will not share the video. No one should have to watch that. But here is a beautiful photo of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by police in broad daylight in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
SAY HIS NAME.
#JacobBlake

Breonna Taylor's killer, Brett Hankison, charged with Class D felony: wanton endangerment in the first degree, max of 1 to 5 years in prison. $15,000 cash bond. No other officers charged. Once again, our “justice” system shows it’s designed to protect the powerful.
#BreonnaTaylor
UPDATE: Her four day trip to Mexico for her "work-related bonding retreat" was granted.
My teenage client remained rear-cuffed at his dad's funeral.
I know I sound like a broken record, but I'm not going to stop:

Due to the national lifeguard shortage, unfortunately we will not be hosting swim programs, including lap swim, senior swim, and Learn to Swim, at our outdoor pools this summer. Outdoor pools will remain open each day for general swim from 11am-3pm and from 4pm–7pm.
Remember Amy Cooper, who called the cops on a Black man out birdwatching? This morning, her case was dismissed.
This isn't surprising. This is how the system was designed to function — to protect the privileged from accountability.

I’ve been a public defender for 14 years and I can tell you how rare it is for a grand jury not to indict.
But here, they didn’t. That’s because this case was absolute bullshit.
Shame on the prosecutor who brought this case and had her arrested and charged in the first place.
JUST IN:
"The grand jury issued a no bill in the case of Brittany Watts, 34, who was facing a fifth-degree abuse of a corpse following a miscarriage she had in September."
Brittany Watts will NOT be indicted.
Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn white supremacy is racist and unfit for the presidency. If you vote for him, you are also racist. The end.

NEW: The city Department of Correction has abruptly stopped notifying the media when an incarcerated person dies and will no longer do so in the future.
ELIZABETH WARREN TWEETED MY OP-ED! I wrote about how her amazing criminal justice reform plan includes funding public defenders and she just tweeted it! I’m not freaking out, you are. Thank you,
@ewarren
, for all of your plans and for everything you do and will do!
#TeamWarren
Public defenders are under-resourced, overworked, and overwhelmed. My plan to reform our criminal justice system will empower our public defenders and make sure they have the resources they need.
I was recently asked by a potential juror during jury selection, “but why would a cop lie?” This potential juror (a cis white male) was incredulous that a police officer would ever make anything up. See below, bro.

Earlier this week, a 72-year-old homeless man was arrested for seeking shelter from the rain in the basement of a NYCHA building. The Manhattan ADA asked for a plea to the charge and 45 days jail. 45 days at Rikers Island at ~$800/night would cost $36,000.
#endmassincarceration
Having seen the surreptitious way NY collects DNA of children as young as 12 and puts it in a DNA database, I can guarantee you Texas is not collecting this DNA to identify victims of school shootings, but rather to prosecute and incarcerate children and their family members.
Did you wake up feeling sick this morning, too?
If you live in Alaska, Indiana, Maine, North Dakota, or West Virginia, your Senator is wavering. That means YOU are crucial!
Call your Senator now: 202-804-8191 tell them to believe women & reject Kavanaugh. There's no time left.
Kyle Rittenhouse, accused of murder, alleged to have violated bail conditions, will not have his bail changed. Remains free.
As a public defender, I represented a man who was held in jail after being accused of stealing a shirt from Urban Outfitters.
Two. Systems. Of. Justice.
I have met plenty of famous people in my life, but never have I ever had a fan girl moment like I did tonight when I spotted our next president, Elizabeth Warren, across Park Avenue South. I ran across the street like a lunatic and proceeded to GUSH about how much I love her.
Countless members of the NYPD abused their power tonight. Many officers are on film assaulting the New Yorkers they are supposed to protect and serve--many peaceful protestors.
When I'm DA, police officers who abuse their power will know they will be held accountable.
Kyle Rittenhouse found not guilty on all charges.
This is not an example of our “broken” criminal legal system. It’s another an example of the system working exactly as designed.
@AOC
As a public defender, I can attest, if you’re being arrested one of the safest things to do is put your hands behind your back or where an officer can see them. And then remember, DO NOT TALK TO THE COPS. Invoke your right to silence and ask for a lawyer immediately.
Instead, they just kept building more car factories producing the exact same cars with the exact same problems in the hopes that the good cars would eventually outnumber the explosive cars. 4/x
And, in addition to the bad batches of cars that blew up, cars in the theoretically good batches would also occasionally blow up, but everyone was so invested in maintaining the idea that these cars were the safest cars on the road, that they refused to build another car. 3/x
