Exploring global cooling interventions | Ex-CEO Nori (carbon removal marketplace, $18M raised). Applying category creation lessons to planetary-scale solutions.

Joined December 2008
I've spent a decade trying to scale carbon removal. Here's the hard truth: We built an entire industry that mathematically CANNOT reach gigatonne scale. This isn't a technology problem. It's not a funding problem. It's a fundamental design failure. š§µ

Fantastic overview of the subject by Ted Parson. Iād recommend this to anyone who wants a thoughtful discussion of solar geoengineering
In this episode, I interview Ted Parson about geoengineering as a potential response to climate risks. What ethical, moral, and biophysical concerns should we consider as we weigh the costs and benefits of further altering Earthās planetary balance? https://t.co/jE1ttPWhDr

Holding warming to 2C is unlikely without SRM but doable at a stretch. 2.5C is doable. If we want to keep warming anywhere close to 1.5C, or even make 2C likely, we need to get serious about researching and experimenting with SRM. It's the only plausible approach.
@ramez And in terms of CO2? 2C still doable ?

I spoke to @SpaceSRM this week and now I am way more hyped about how cool this could be. Gigantic space mirror fans with 40km long blades and youād need thousands of them. š± No wonder everyone thinks itās sci-fi. At the same time, all you need is financial incentive alignment
Most of the SRM researchers Iāve spoken with dismiss space-based sunlight reflection ideas as too expensive or too long to produce and so thereās not a lot of research into it as far as I can tell. But it would be worth researching further, as it would certainly present different

Itās already too hot. And thereās no realistic pathway to slowing the growth of warming, let alone reversing it, in the near term. (Carbon removal remains the long-term solution but that will take too long to avoid mass suffering.) We have to intentionally cool the planet.

Many places may become uninhabitable. Many people may be on their own.

A large solar-powered AI satellite constellation would be able to prevent global warming by making tiny adjustments in how much solar energy reached Earth

Iāve made a short film. Look at the things around you: doors, bins, staircases, furniture, railings, doorhandles, windows. Do you like how they look, or not? Modern design has become boring, but it doesnāt have to be this way. The word ābeautifulā is overused. We donāt need

if I can add just ONE thing to your or anyone elseās understanding of climate change & mitigation efforts itās well illustrated here: CO2 emissions mitigation is simultaneously very vital AND very low leverage with respect to making it materially less hot anytime soon.

Watched the whole thing last night, and you should too. I love her ending message and hope more people hear it.

Thereās too much sunlight, itās getting hotter, and we really ought to do something about this like reflect some sunlight back out
šØThe Earth is reflecting less & less sunlight, new study revealsšØ Satellite data show the planet is reflecting less sunlight than it used to, with the Northern Hemisphere darkening fastest. This imbalance has big implications for climate and rainfall.š§µ1/8

It is both sobering and encouraging to see this tiny community getting more formally organized. Everyone's finding their piece of the puzzle. I've found mine in building narrative and trust infrastructure. Full reflections here:

By my estimate, fewer than a thousand people globally are working on cooling interventions. Now the Climate Emergencies Forum is helping this tiny ecosystem coordinate efforts.

We don't have time to muddle through. The climate crisis demands strategic coordination. Without cultural permission to even discuss cooling interventions, technical readiness means nothing.

CEF is building the "backbone" - not another research institute or advocacy group, but actual coordination infrastructure. Getting dozens organizations to align on shared principles is how movements shift from ideas to action.

The scale mismatch is staggering. The shopping mall near my home employs more people than the entire global workforce figuring out how to stabilize Earth's temperature. But Thursday's @RenPhil21 Climate Emergencies Forum workshop showed something new emerging.

I spent 4 days at NY Climate Week watching the architecture for cooling Earth finally take shape. Fewer than 1,000 people globally work on climate interventionsābut for the first time, they're building the coordination infrastructure to work as a unified force. š§µ

In case you missed it, 2 major AMOC studies have come out in the past week. One from Stefan. They both find AMOC collapse is no longer a long shot, and is now likely in an emissions business as usual scenario -and- the tipping point (of no return) is likely very soon⦠just a
