Despite this election, I remain an optimist about America and the world. Humanity will continue to produce new ideas and new innovations to improve our lives. Good people will continue to come together to improve the world. And the political tide will turn. We'll make it so.

Flexible charging (and V2G) matters: uncontrolled evening charging can lean on gas/coal; controlled/V2G boosts the business case for new wind/solar/storage, so total system emissions can fall even as EV load rises. 6/

In geographies with lots of consistent sun throughout the year, batteries + solar provide baseload at the same cost as nuclear. By the time a new reactor can get built, the solar+battery solution will be ~1/2 the price.
Old news, but I need to remind some people on here that you can now build a 1GW *baseload* solar + battery plant at about the same cost as a 1GW nuclear plant. And 5x faster. UAE launches world’s first 24/7 solar PV battery storage gigascale project

Batteries are the new solar. This is just the beginning. They're going to see explosive growth over the next decade. Maybe a quintupling of scale over the next 10 years.
Battery energy storage system era is here. Countries across the globe are scaling up storage the next few years (and for years to come). Over 250 gigascale projects could come online within two years. Battery capacity as % of peak loads rising across key markets.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved. Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning. https://t.co/Xf3EE89ANI

Chinese brands are so far ahead of us in EVs if these specs are real and this is at or can get to commercial scale.
Insane Zeekr EV specs: 800km range, 0-100 in <3sec, MegaWatt (7min) charging, $40k https://t.co/kopxHDIIuv

This question--why can't we just solve our rare earths problem already!--comes up a lot. As someone who worked on this when I was in government, several thoughts. This is to explain, not defend, why we are where we are, and to offer recommendations. Clearly, we need to fix the
Why can't the US do a Project Warp Speed for rare earth minerals? @SecretaryBurgum - This seems like a top priority. Can we get this done my Q2 2026?

TIL (in my replies) that there are Anne Frank truthers, who think she never existed, that her diary is a work of fiction. Obvious there would be on this site, in retrospect.

I'm more worried about AI under authoritarian control than I am about unaligned AI.

My twitter timilene is dominated by 1 AI; 2 Authoritarianism. Few post about both topics. Fewer still are asking if AI is more dangerous because of rising authoritariansim.

Pope Leo quotes Hannah Arendt: “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist." https://t.co/QFwLJrFY6C

Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the "ancient art of lying" and manipulation.

I was talking with a friend and made this confession: When I was younger, I thought everything was settled, pretty much. Feudalism bad. Nazism bad. Communism bad. Liberal democracy good. Etc. How weird it has been to discover, at this stage, that nothing is settled.

Even people in AI keep forgetting what log-linear scaling laws mean. The improvement from 100k GPUs to 1 million GPUs is the same as 10k to 100k. Which is the same as 1k GPUs to 10k. It'll be better, but there are severe diminishing returns to compute.
GPT-5 was trained on 180,000 GPUs, a true powerhouse. By the end of this year, OpenAI will have over 1 million GPUs, according to Sam Altman. My bet: the GPT-6 training run starts right after that… and by mid-2026, we’ll be looking at AGI. The acceleration is insane.

"Bechtel is willing to change the way it gets paid, Albert said. 'Some areas have more cost-certainty,' he said. 'We can take on more risk for some.'" One of many benefits of building reactors like the AP1000 that are no longer first-of-a-kind!
The US may have as many as 10 large nuclear power plants under construction within five years, meeting a goal set by President Donald Trump, according to Bechtel, one of the industry’s top builders

No tipping point modeling is ever exact. And AMOC collapse is currently highly debated. Nevertheless, this should: 1. Concern everyone. 2. Make clear that our actions still matter.
“The tipping point that makes an Amoc shutdown inevitable is likely to be passed within a few decades, but that the collapse itself may not happen until 50 to 100 years later.”
