7/ We’re excited to hear *your* ideas for exciting FRCs to accelerate @ARIA_research's opportunity spaces. Competitive applications should include a clear vision for their org, including why the work can be funded with contracts + grants. If you're unsure, talk to customers!.

6/ What kind of work qualifies?. We're looking for FRCs that can enable work that is better or *qualitatively different* than might happen otherwise, such as:. ➡️ Developing new instruments.➡️ Bespoke hardware/software for researchers.➡️ Systems integration for academic "point.

5/ What does FRCL offer?. ✔️ £100,000 in flexible support over 12 months. ✔️ Ops and business plan support. ✔️ Network of potential customers/funders, R&D operators, etc. ✔️ Guest lectures, mentorship, and custom curriculum. ✔️ Opportunity to learn from other FRC founders.

4/ What is an FRC?. FRCs pursues an ambitious technical vision w/ a mix of contracts + grants. As per @ObadiaAlex, if FROs are VC-backed startups, FRCs are bootstrapped. The technical vision can range from building a single piece of tech to a centre of excellence in an R&D area.

3/ What inspired the FRC?. Researchers also often refer to these organisations as 'BBNs', inspired by ARPAnet contractor, Bolt, Beranek & Newman and J.C.R. Licklider’s exceptional BBN computing group.

2/ Why FRCL?. Some of the UK’s key R&D work falls between the cracks:.✖️Too applied, engineering-heavy, or user-focused for academia.✖️Too much research left to go for VC, or the market is too small.✖️Too unconventional for large consultancies. FRCs can fill that gap.
