NHS GA Cons Psychiatrist in Chesterfield 28 years and doctor for 38. Seminars in General Adult Psychiatry (2024). Views my own - but owe a lot to Karl Jaspers

Jaspers! “the idea of the disease-entity is in truth an idea in Kant’s sense of the word: the concept of an objective which one cannot reach…but all the same it indicates the path for fruitful research and supplies a valid point of orientation for…empirical investigations”
Thanks to @SameiHuda for recommending this paper. Most of our debates in psychiatry would benefit from the clarity of thinking shown here.

In the #AssistedDying Bill, we have reached a crucial point in medical ethics. I will always believe that preserving life is paramount, that helping people through their worst crisis is essential. I will never accept that helping patients take their lives is part of our role.

Why physician-assisted suicide has no place in the NHS | BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care

The UK is currently debating legislation to allow physician-assisted suicide for competent, terminally ill adults. Though not explicit, it is likely to be delivered through the National Health...

This is the fourth Nazi euthanasia memorial site I've visited. If you’re interested in this topic and want to learn more, check out my article: “Euthanasia in the Castle: Inside Europe’s Museums of Nazi Medical Crimes” in @PublicDiscourse.

Today we might instinctively look at Nazi criteria for death as utterly baseless, but at the time seasoned medical professionals regarded them as reasonable. To have a sense of history is to grasp...

The calling for death to people is a criminal offence in the UK. I anticipate appropriate action will be taken as a matter of priority to arrest those who believe they are beyond the law.

Sadly there was no box for ‘entryism’ but I ticked ‘trades union’ so I hope that will do
@paul42smg You’ve mentioned it once, but I’ll think you’ll get away with it.

If we are to withstand our enemies, bring our society together, and tame the technium (somehow ensure that human values govern the new age of machines), we are going to need values that are up to the job. I don't think humanist atheism or progressive liberalism or whatever the

Christians by contrast think human beings are fallen - weak, selfish, dangerous - so we don't trust them with absolute power. That's why over the centuries, especially in England, the idea developed that the law should protect us from each other, and even from ourselves, and

I've been accused of disguising something myself - my Christian faith. And it's true that while I've never hidden it (see my maiden speech) I didn't parade my faith as the basis of my objection to assisted suicide. You don't need religious arguments to show this Bill is bad,

Opposing the #AssistedDyingBill isn’t being immune to painful patient stories or dismissive of choice. It’s about social responsibility, our duty to help people through despair. About the value we place on human life. 1/2

Nothing progressive about nations where •1 in 20 deaths, thousands/year, are by AD •these include people with mental illness •medical ethics are re-written against views of many doctors •inc those in palliative medicine, specialists in terminal care.

Not the main argument against #AssistedDyingBill that I would use, but it could be the best approach to use with Labour MPs.

Our obligations to each other are ill served if laws focus unduly on those who want assisted dying. The priority should be the best palliative care, says former prime minister Gordon Brown

The Leadbeater bill is on a knife-edge; but if it passes, you can expect in 10-15 years to hear its backers saying, “Of course, in retrospect…” and “Hindsight is 20/20” and “Had we known then what we know now…” Thread on what we know now, June 10 2025:
