Overdose Awareness Day is a time for us to remember and honor those who are no longer with us and strengthen our commitment to supporting those who are struggling. We must continue doing everything we can to prevent another family from losing a loved one to opioid abuse.
Today on Overdose Awareness Day, we remember the New Yorkers we have lost to the opioid crisis and the families left grieving. The Council has passed several laws to prevent overdoses and will continue to prioritize keeping New Yorkers safe. 🧵

My thoughts are with the @FDNY firefighters who were injured battling this devastating fire in Richmond Hill, as well as the residents impacted. I'm wishing everyone a full recovery, and I'm grateful for the bravery of our first responders.
I'm praying for the nine @FDNY firefighters injured in today's fire in Richmond Hill. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for all those wounded while doing the heroic work of protecting New Yorkers.

The Trump administration's continued attacks on DEI and efforts to advance racial equity are attacks on us all. This morning, I joined @TheRevAl and @NationalAction's March on Wall Street to call for economic justice, accountability, and an end to this escalation of racism and

The use of ghost plates, especially from out of state, to evade responsibility for violations and fines has become too commonplace in NYC. @NYCCouncil’s investigation underscores the need for more coordinated enforcement and policies to ensure bad actors are held accountable.
Ghost vehicles—cars with fraudulent, expired, or mismatched plates—are racking up fines, dodging enforcement, and undermining public safety on NYC streets. Our new report shows this is not an isolated problem, but a citywide crisis that requires action to address.

I’m heartbroken by this senseless tragedy in Minneapolis. Our children deserve to go to school without fear of violence. My thoughts are with those who were impacted and their loved ones, who should receive victim services to help them recover from this trauma.
BREAKING: Two children were killed and 17 people injured in a shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school, police said. The shooter is also dead.

These bills would secure fair pay for the nearly 20,000 grocery delivery workers who keep NYC’s booming delivery sector afloat – without raising grocery costs. With his veto, Mayor Adams has chosen to side with corporate interests over working-class New Yorkers once again.
The data is clear: we can have fair pay and workplace protections for food delivery workers and still enjoy the meals we love. Grocery delivery workers deserve the same protections. Mayor Adams' veto isn’t about protecting New Yorkers’ wallets. It’s about protecting corporate

It's critical that our government invest in services to fight hunger. Especially with 1 in 4 children experiencing poverty, Summer EBT is a lifeline for working families during these summer months, ensuring our youngest have what they need to stay healthy, safe, and nourished.
Today, @NYCCouncilAyala joined @NoKidHungryNY and @MercyCenterBrnx in the Bronx to encourage families to sign up for Summer EBT before the September 4 deadline. Summer EBT offers eligible families up to $120 per school-aged child to buy groceries and other essentials.

Confronting the citywide housing crisis requires us to invest in housing solutions. I’m proud of the work with @CMErikBottcher and @KeithPowersNYC to pass the Midtown South Mixed-Use Plan that supports our historic garment industry and delivers much-needed affordable homes.
