Have you heard of the giant phantom jelly? There have been less than 150 sightings of this species worldwide! This rare footage was captured by our scientists. 👻🪼 📽️: 2024 NorthEast Pacific Deep-sea Exploration Project Expedition @nepdep_

Welcome back to our fishery officers who just returned to Victoria, B.C., after successfully completing this year's mission to detect and deter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the North Pacific.

1/2 There’s nothing spooky about these skeletons! 🐋💀 At a whale fall like this, large scavengers come in to feed first. Next, smaller animals, such as worms and crustaceans, feed on the remaining tissues and even burrow into the now nutrient-rich sediment around the carcass.

#DeepSeaMining could destroy some of the most mysterious and least known ecosystems. @CherisseDuPreez and @rmlauer37 share interesting scientific facts and discoveries from deep ocean seamounts and hydrothermal vents with @CanGeo:

Though it’s the largest ecosystem on Earth, we know less about the deep ocean than the surface of the moon. As the threat of mining looms, will its fate be decided before we know enough to make such...

That’s a wrap on the 2024 #NEPDEP expedition! 🎬 Among the most remarkable findings: We mapped the heat flow, skate migration, & nursery ground, & Canada’s first known Precious Coral forest—all on the same seamount!🪸🥚🌋🥚🪸 🎬 Full 4 min video https://t.co/nMXsslA4Jq

This octopus is at the end of her life. Her eggs have hatched & her job is done. She'll continue to waste away & become easy prey for predators & scavengers. It's heartbreaking to witness but it's reality & her death means survival for others in the deep sea. @nepdep_ @ROPOS_ROV

This octopus is brooding eggs. Amazing how she lets the ROV see more and more of the eggs as we wait. She'll stay here for years, not eating, only moving her arms to aerate her eggs or fight off predators, until her babies hatch. Then her job is done. 🐙 @nepdep_ @ROPOS_ROV

Not surprising that one of the many reasons why I like skates & rays is that their underside looks like a happy face even though their eyes are on top.😁 @nepdep_ @ROPOS_ROV #nepdep

This week the NorthEast Pacific Deep-sea Exploration Project Expedition team visited the SG̲áan K̲ínghlas-Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area. It is believed that this seamount was an active volcanic island about 18,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. 📸: 2024 NEPDEP

Definitely one of the coolest captures ever from an ROV of this female Boreal skate in active egg laying mode. Well done @ROPOS_ROV team! This dive is live now on FB you can check the timestamp on the screenshots & go back and watch on video. @nepdep_ #nepdep
