Unpublished research alert! More eggs are laid when there's more underwater vegetation. Things like eelgrass, rockweed, red algae, flat kelp, and sugar kelp are very important to spawning.

Herring can live up to 15 years, although this is very uncommon. More often, they get eaten before then. 😬.

Female herring can lay up to 20,000 eggs per year. Collectively, a school will lay millions of eggs. The eggs will incubate for about 3 weeks on marine vegetation, hatch into larvae and drift, then grow into juveniles. It takes 2 years for a herring to become an adult and spawn.

The migratory herring don't migrate using smell or in ways other fish, like salmon, do, but are guided by older, wiser herring. (Note that this fact is still somewhat up for debate!).

Pacific herring are split into two groups: resident and migratory populations. The resident population used to be much greater in number, but they have been reduced over time by fisheries. The migratory stock now dominates.

Herring underpin the who marine ecosystem in the Strait of Georgia, and are the most important prey. If chinook salmon don't have access to plentiful herring, they don't grow as large, which then impacts orcas.
