Seed banking is crucial to safeguarding threatened plants from extinction, but seeds can be surprisingly fussy, as I learned in my latest for @KnowableMag ☘️🌱🌳🌼🌸🌺 Featuring @naomibot @cpcplants @MobotMuseum @uwanews #KewGardens & more https://t.co/SycOJgpG0v

The New York Times Magazine tells the story of how two members of AC's board of directors were brought together by their work to protect the Amargosa, among other wild Nevada landscapes. We are grateful for your passion for the overlooked corners of our public lands!

Who dis? This is the Amargosa niterwort, a biological wonder, worth more than all the Tesla's in the world. Its species like this that are building a better word and its what we are fighting for. 💚

One of the joys of my life is to work alongside my partner and love @bitterwaterblue ❤️. Our work to preserve life in the desert is featured in this @nytimes @NYTmag piece by Meg Bernhard. Please read and share!

Many climate experts see its deserts as a place to build the green-energy future. For two local activists, the price is too great.

When the @USFWS picks and chooses the mining company’s “science” to obfuscate facts about habitat destruction. This project spells doom for Tiehm’s buckwheat and its pollinators. @AlanHalaly

Tiehm’s buckwheat, an endangered wildflower, could still hold up construction on a Nevada lithium mine that the Biden administration approved on Thursday.

Bottom line: the Rhyolite Ridge Project is an extinction project. The only responsibility Ioneer has is to their pocket books.
I'm glad the Rhyolite Ridge project is moving forward today. This is an example of how we can work together to responsibly build our critical mineral supply chain, create jobs, and reduce our reliance on the Communist Party of China - all while promoting clean energy.

Hey plant lovers! This is our last chance to tell the BLM to save Tiehm’s buckwheat! The Rhyolite Ridge Mine would put this species in the crosshairs & literally sitting at the edge of an open pit mine. Stand up to save Tiehm’s buckwheat now! https://t.co/zdqa8YewEH

I do not know what I will find when I can return to these places. The area of the Bridge Fire is a place that has carried me in hard times, a place of solace, and refuge. I only hope I can find my way back with strength to help it recover. ❤️

We stand to loose a lot. People have lost their homes, fire fighters are risking their lives, & vegetation could burn so hot it may not recover. Could the fire following seed bank burn too hot? Will we lose more big cone spruce, a poorly fire adapted chaparral pine?

Chaparral forms impenetrable stands. Clearing & cutting it leads to invasion of weeds that are kindling for fires. Newly cut fuel breaks were implemented in the Bridge Fire area. The fire seems to have moved beyond these points of defense.

The dynamic of fire in chaparral is vastly different than in forest systems. Chaparral burns hot and moves fast. Amid record heat this dynamic is exacerbated. Because we have a Mediterranean climate, the plants haven't seen rain in months, giving us the gift of fire season.

All three fires started in chaparral, a misunderstood vegetation, much maligned in part because the plants are very flammable. However, healthy chaparral is ecologically important, vibrant, and biodiverse.

Southern California is on fire amid record breaking heat. Human lives, homes, and ecosystems are at risk from three rapidly growing fires that are driven by human-caused climate change. As of today they not even close to being contained. I am devastated. 💔
