American badgers are incredible diggers, using their strong forelimbs and long claws to excavate tunnels and dens at speed. Their digging aerates the soil and creates burrows that other animals (like foxes, burrowing owls, and skunks) later use for shelter. 📸: Norman Welsh

Did you know that hunting and fishing is allowed on more than 400 national wildlife refuges, water management districts, and national fish hatcheries? That means family traditions, good food on the table, and access to the outdoors on public lands across the country. 📸USFWS

It’s not just a day on the calendar, it’s a tradition that built American conservation. National Hunting and Fishing Day is here, and we’re celebrating the role hunters and anglers play in conserving wildlife and wild places. 📸Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge by USFWS

Today is National Public Lands Day. All national wildlife refuges that usually charge an entrance fee are fee-free today. That's more opportunities to explore, wander, and maybe even spot a white-tailed buck showing off his best “branch manager” impression at a refuge near you.

It's Fry-day! These are baby paddlefish, called fry. At this age, they survive off the yolk sac they hatched with, but will soon start feeding on microscopic plankton which will help them grow to be up to 7 feet long and 200 pounds! Photo: Ralph Simmons/USFWS

Tomorrow, September 26, is Black-footed Ferret Rediscovery Day. This year marks 44 years since a wild population of black-footed ferrets was rediscovered in Wyoming in 1981, years after scientists had thought they'd gone extinct.

What is it they say is in the eye of the beholder? For this alligator in TX, it's the reflection of the photographer. Alligators can reach surprisingly high speeds in short bursts on land, so be sure to give them enough space so that everyone can feel safe. 📸: Norman Welsh
