Before the bald eagle soared onto official seals, another creature had already coiled its way around the American imagination. It didn’t fly. It rattled.

The phrase "DONT TREAD ON ME" was forged in the early days of American history and inspired by a shy North American reptile. The timber rattlesnake is a secretive but powerful native species that once stood for unity and defiance during the Revolutionary War. #America250

While there's no scientific backing to the idea that the banding color can predict winter weather, it's still fun to watch for patterns. Even caterpillars from the same clutch of eggs can have a wide variation in color!

8 out of 9 woolly bear caterpillars agree it will be a mild winter. Severe or mild, they'll all be frozen solid under leaf litter anyway. In the spring, these caterpillars will thaw out, pupate within cocoons and emerge as adult Isabella tiger moths. 📸Courtney Celley/USFWS

American crows are among the smartest and most adaptable birds in North America. In the fall, they form large communal roosts, sometimes gathering hundreds to thousands of birds. These groups help them stay safe, alerting to predators. Photo by Peter Pearsall/USFWS

American oystercatchers are shellfish specialists. They use that large, strong bill to stab into a slightly open clam or other bivalve shell, snip the muscle that is used to hold the shell closed, and snack on the mollusk. Photo: John Olson at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

In the early 1900s, wild turkeys were nearly extinct. Thanks to conservation efforts, their population count today is approximately 6.5 million, with ranges expanding in many areas. Next time you spot a wild turkey, remember this amazing rebound! Happy Thanksgiving! 📸USFWS

Posting a wild turkey photo every day because turkeys are cool. Wild turkeys have between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers. They use them for insulation, communication, waterproofing, protection, and dramatic flair. 📸 Raymond Lee (sharetheexperience)

Posting a wild turkey photo every day, because why not. Only male wild turkeys gobble. Females just look at them like, “Calm down, Brad.” Males make the gobble sound to attract females and compete with other males. 📸 Steven Hunter (sharetheexperience)

Posting a wild turkey photo every day until people yell at us to stop. Wild turkeys can run up to 25 miles per hour, which feels really fast for a bird shaped like a gym class dodgeball. 📸Heather Bell (sharetheexperience)

Posting a wild turkey photo every day until our boss tells us to stop. Wild turkeys can make more than 30 different vocalizations, from soft purrs to loud yelps to gobble gobbles. If they had a group chat, you’d definitely mute it. 📸 John Mack (sharetheexperience)

With colder weather setting in, it's time to start think about hunkering down for the winter. While striped skunks don't hibernate, they do spend much of the winter in cycles of torpor. Their body temperature and metabolism is reduced to minimize energy loss. 📸: K. Theule/USFWS
