Very excited to share that part of my PhD work is now out in @SciImmunology! There we show how modulation of asymmetric cell division can boost CD8 T cell memory. #immunology #memory #ACD #Tcells

Just climbed some steps to warm up for the #KSMitochondria25 in Taipei. First time in Asia, first time I will talk in a @KeystoneSymp, all very exciting!

This will likely be one of my last posts here. If you want to know more about how we plan to understand the reciprocal relationship linking organelle ageing, T cell fate decisions and organismal ageing, find me where skies are bluer: https://t.co/5yMqJBLsRi (4/4)

I was so lucky to have such wonderful women as supervisors. Also have to mention the support from @MichaelLDustin, who allowed me to be an honorary member of his lab. And last but not least, @ImmunologyKing for being the most lovely mentor and @UniBasel for believing in me. (3/4)

Big shout out to @KatjaSimon4 and all the @aksimonlab crew, specially my favourite ladies @avlecvie, @pileticklara and @Crab49165586. And of course I can't miss a big thank you to @LabOxenius, where I became a T cell biologist π«Ά (2/4)

It was not a straightforward path, but it is happening: I am officially an Assistant Professor-to-be! π I am thrilled to announce that was awarded a @snsf_ch Starting Grant and will start my lab next year. Very grateful to all those that supported me over the last years π (1/4)

What does autophagy degrade to maintain a healthy immune cell? Katja and other leaders in the autophagy field discuss this and other questions they believe are key for us to deepen our understanding of this fundamental cellular mechanism. @NatureCellBio

Nature Cell Biology - Our understanding of the basic mechanisms of autophagy is growing, but many questions remain about the types of autophagy cells use, when they use them, and how they function...

I have experienced both sides as a Brazilian that got a "global north" passport after immigration: I can still remember how it felt weird to be the same person, but suddenly have access to so much privilege because of a piece of paper.
Many people have no idea how these things work. For example, right now, as a Brazilian, I can't accept invitations to speak at conferences in Europe because my visa to work in the U.S. has expired. I am not illegal; I have a work contract with the University of California until

And this was also my first ever thread, but X is definetely not Twitter anymore: all came up a bit out of order. Things start here and here is also the link for the preprint.

T cell immunity is impaired during ageing, particularly in memory responses needed for efficient vaccination. Autophagy and asymmetric cell division (ACD) are cell biological mechanisms key to memory...
Ok, bringing this profile back to life because: 1. I just pressed the submit button of a grant application. 2. My first ever preprint is online since less than 24h ago. π

At some point I believe preprints were meant to allow some feedback from the scientific community - beyond the traditional peer-revision. So please share and get in touch with any ideas and suggestions!

This is maybe something one could look from different perspectives, but we found that T cells inheriting old mitochondria are less quiescent, rely on glycolysis to meet their metabolic demands and exhibit a stronger one-carbon metabolism signature.

So we used CD8 T cells that maintain or clear old mitochondria in adoptive transfer experiments and voilΓ : we see that asymmetric inheritance of a pre-mitotic cell fate determinant indeed matters for cell fate! But what do old mitochondria do to the T cell?

But hey, #mitochondria are big players in T cell #metabolism and fate, and now we could use a real cell fate determinant as our asymmetry readout - even if this would rely on the synergy between asymmetric cell division and autophagy.
