IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Essential thread🧵 from @mer__edith, her response to a (rather patrician) note by Lord Bethell - who claims that 25 years of working "on the internet" (apparently in Journalism, Nightclubs & PR) underscores his understanding, expertise & frustration.
Dear Lord Bethell, thank you for being willing to engage. I'm providing my reply here, in a thread & a linked letter, given that the public is clearly interested in this topic. I am hopeful that we can find common ground. Here, then, is the letter: https://t.co/pgdEQCuXFq 1/

Extraordinary that the cycle path is only for part of the day, so that people can park and leave their cars in everyone's way in a public space. The entitlement around car use, and its antisocial consequences, blows my mind.
"The kid has skills!" Video shows 5-year-old cyclist expertly navigate his way through traffic and a blocked cycle lane His parents pointed out the lack of safe, segregated infrastructure that would make more kids get on their bikes https://t.co/dlPagfrGMO

We have an update. Ahead of our final market of the year this Saturday, we wanted to share where we're at since we announced our break from trading. These last few weeks have certainly been an emotional rollercoaster for our small volunteer-led team... https://t.co/wrT3RauGxP

it's actually your civic duty to share Ursula le Guin's casually devastating, icily astute take down of the harry potter novels whenever you see it

NEW: Britain’s grim winter of strikes, falling incomes and a worsening NHS crisis is not some unfortunate series of events It’s the inevitable result of a decade of Tory austerity that steadily weakened the state’s capacity to respond to shocks https://t.co/xJcNiCJk2b Thread:

So excited that @stationsouth is making the trike library I fundraised £10,000 for a reality. Money is being used for trike that can be loaned out, storage (trikes take up lots of space😅) and community engagement. Thank you to everyone who donated. This is just the start!

This is going to be one hell of a week for postal workers. Facing an out of control CEO and threats to their job, terms and conditions. They take strike action on Thursday and Friday. Are you with management or your postie? Pick a side. RT if you back postal workers.

This (as usual for JBM) is an excellent thread on a complex issue. We have to improve how everyone in society can eat, exercise, *live* rather than blaming people for environmental outcomes. Applies in so many other areas too
NEW: a column in the Times argues that the only way to tackle obesity is through fat shaming (yes, you read that right). It’s an astonishing argument to make, and unsurprisingly it falls to pieces under scrutiny. Let’s take a look, and see if we can do better:

Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. V/@StreetsblogUSA

Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Today I met with officials in Helsinki, which has had a ~75% drop in road deaths over the last thirty years (including recent years with no ped/cyclist deaths at all). Me: “How much of a role has IT played in reducing crashes?” City official: “Zero. We simply slowed down cars.”
NEW! @USDOT is seeking your feedback on a critical topic – Intersection Safety. See “Enhancing the Safety of Vulnerable Road Users at Intersections” and see how you can contribute https://t.co/tBShkfgKu3

Don't hug the kerb. Cyclists may sometimes choose to ride in the centre of a lane. Not to deliberately slow drivers, but to increase visibility and ensure cars can only overtake when safe to pass. 📸: @davewalker
