Pedestrian Deaths 2013-2022
99% of deaths are caused by people driving motor vehicles
The government turning on cyclists is a distraction from their failure to save pedestrian lives over the last decade
Trying to arrive by bike to a meeting at Beehive Mill, Ancoats.
Not everyone has the ability to lift their cycle off the ground.
@urban_splash
@TomBloxhamMBE
this is your building - what can be done to make cycle parking more accessible?
NEW: Manchester has just released its new city centre strategy! Remove thru-traffic, fully pedestrianise Deansgate & other areas, create a triangle of proper cycle routes, remove bus terminuses incl from Picc Gardens, make Picc station a real gateway....
Depressing drop in number of cyclists braving UK roads - particularly women - and the Sunday Times frames it as a victory for drivers in their “long running battle with cyclists”. 🙄
BREAKING
@AndyBurnhamGM
, pending re-election, has tonight announced the rollout of 100 permanent school streets across Greater Manchester by the end of 2028
DEANSGATE IS GETTING CYCLE LANES THIS MONTH
Road closures will start on the 30th April until December
This is the missing link that will unlock a continuous cycle route from Manchester city centre to Chorlton
Your reminder that without 'Bus Stop Bypasses' there is no safe cycling infrastructure
With no safe cycling infrastructure, cyclists will continue to use the pavement - creating even more danger for visually impaired pedestrians
HAPPY DANCE:
@ManCityCouncil
and
@AngelikiStg
say they are ready to pedestrianise part of Deansgate as long as they can re-route the buses. Woo! This is excellent news - kudos to
@XR_MCR
for showing them how it can be done
Signage like this blames pedestrians for a problem solely created by road violence and inadequate junction design
We are really disappointed councils and
@OfficialTfGM
have allowed such poor public messaging to be displayed
'People are surprised to know that cycling is a lawless activity when it comes to the Road Traffic Act'
Families of victims of speeding cyclists demand action for a 'dangerous cycling' law.
"Restrict the number of hours a day that car traffic is banned from bus lanes"
If this goes ahead then it will spell the end of the
@BeeNetwork
@AndyBurnhamGM
must fight against this attack on sustainable travel.
Congratulations to all pro active travel candidates who won in the local elections!

We offer tours of existing infrastructure so Cllrs to familiarise themselves with what can be done
MAKE 🚌 ALL 🚌 BUS 🚌 LANES 🚌 24h
If a road isn't busy, cars don't need to use the bus lane.
If it is busy, bus passengers deserve priority.
At all times, bus lanes provide a less dangerous space for cyclists (albeit less safe and less inclusive than segregated cycle tracks)
@MartinH51368406
@WalkRideGM
A question that was asked in the consultation. We're struggling to see the sense in a part-time bus lane when general motor traffic doesn't need access to two lanes outside peak hours. And if it does, then so do the buses.
🔊 We are consulting on plans for the A6 corridor from the boundary with Manchester to the town centre.

Two more drop-ins will take place - the next one is today, Wednesday, from 2pm until 8pm at Heaton Sports Club, Green Lane.
If you're wondering why we need School Streets then look no further than this video
This could have been your kids school.
Ask your local councillor if they'll install a School Street to protect your child
Great to see opening of UK’s 1st ‘Cyclops’ walking & cycling junction - in Manchester, & more coming in GM via

@ManCityCouncil

@AngelikiStg
who are speeding up rest of this route & £79m of other plans 👍
We just visited Ghent, a city that has almost entirely managed to remove city centre traffic with a circulation plan
Will Manchester - the city that does things differently - be as bold as Ghent?
42% increase in road deaths in GM this year - 6 people killed cycling, including a 6-yr-old boy; 16 pedestrians killed, among them an 8-yr-old boy. Stark reminder of the need to make our streets safer & put people before cars

gets his way, Greater Manchester will get 20,000 “implied” zebra crossings to help pedestrians cross side roads. These cost £300 but are currently illegal in the uk. From today’s

Brilliant to see live bus tracking starting to appear on the
@BeeNetwork
& other travel apps
Rolling this out across GM will help people choose to walk to the bus stop, confident of timings
Reliable public transport goes hand in hand with active travel 🚶 🦽 🚲 🚌 🚃
Absolutely bonkers that
@BBCNews
&
@SkyNews
are told by the courts to block the entire pavement
Absolutely shameful that disabled people are discriminated against like this
Motorists in Edinburgh face a £100 fine for parking on pavements, as the city becomes the first in Scotland to implement the ban.

We have submitted a bid to
@ManCityCouncil
to close a section of Deansgate on Friday 13th September to let the people take over. Expect greenery, deck chairs, a bike lane, science experiments, children doing their Daily Mile & much more if we get the go ahead cc:

If we can spontaneously close
#Deansgate
for a day to permit a parade of sporting champions, then surely we can do so permanently to enable our citizens to saunter along this key boulevard every day. Let's make that happen!
Surely you’re not really planning on remodelling one of Manchester’s busiest streets with no protected cycle lanes
@ManCityCouncil
? We applaud the pedestrian crossings but what about bikes?
Absolutely shocking news today that a teenager has been killed by a driver just off Deansgate.
We need safer roads in Manchester City Centre, it is absolutely unacceptable this could happen in our city.
#APPEAL
| Officers investigating a fatal collision whereby a cyclist lost their life in Pendleton yesterday (Thursday 16 May 2024) are appealing for information.
A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Now we have seen the final plans, it can be said that Manchester will have the longest and safest Dutch style cycle route in the UK - what an achievement!
Now let's get building this across the entire city and see the transformation in how people travel 🚴
Today we announced our Active Travel and the Bee Network Manifesto
Active Travel should be at the heart of the Bee Network
Our nine point plan explains how 👇
Today many parents across Withington will be telling their kids it is no longer safe for them to travel to school by bike or scooter.
The reason they will have this conversation is because
@WithWardLab
decided to remove the local LTN
