The FBI is calling
@bariweiss

@mtaibbi

@ShellenbergerMD
"conspiracy theorists" who are purveying "disinformation." I'd like to see an open debate between these parties.
What an extraordinary moment for our govt institutions...
🚨BREAKING: The FBI responds to
@elonmusk
releasing the Twitter files:
"It is unfortunate that conspiracy theorists and others are feeding the American public misinformation with the sole purpose of attempting to discredit the agency."
I don't live in CA, and I'm happy about that. Don't pretend to tell Californians how to vote - but I have met
@ShellenbergerMD
and I wish we had people that smart and humane running for office in my own state of VA...
Historic!
The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI 🇪🇺
The
#AIAct
is much more than a rulebook — it's a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race.
The best is yet to come! 👍
Been interviewed by a lot of smart people, and
@bariweiss
is at the top of that list. Not really a podcast - more like an audio documentary = audiomentary?
Brilliant...
Happy to announce that a documentary based on The Revolt of the Public is in the works. I’ve teamed up with director
@JohnPapola
and his terrific crew at Emergent Order Foundation – we've already begun filming interviews.
I am, as you might imagine, truly buzzed about this...

So we said "Don't" to the Iranians and they did. So we said we stand with Israel but we also said we condemn Israel. So we called the ruling prince in Saudi Arabia a "pariah" the we begged him for more oil production.
Is there a plan anywhere in here?
"Dumber" because even in the Cold War, when we knew the Soviets were trying to manipulate the info sphere to influence USG decisions, it never occurred to anyone to get our govt involved in content control.
That was what we were fighting against...
Prove "influence". Where's the data? What pure American minds are polluted? And if there's no data, how isn't this an even dumber version of "a Commie under every bed"?
I have read many wise thinker saying that the pandemic will reinforce trust in institutions - but this is what I see has happened, in most countries, again and again...

I don't go in for predictions or melodrama - but this could be a fatal development for the administration on the one issue it was going to be judged on...
"The West" is a very silly term when used as a euphemism for "white people", but actually makes sense when used to mean "the countries that are allied together against Russia"
I'm happy to announce a new printing by Stripe Press of The Revolt of the Public - all cleaned up (I'm looking at you,
@Yascha_Mounk
) and with a new index.
My thanks to all of you in Twitterland and beyond who have read the book and keep me busy fussing about its ideas...
Google has morphed into a metaphor of affluent hyper-educated America: easy life, no competition, virtue shadow-boxing to escape boredom.
Great piece by Solana…
After the Gemini fiasco, new reporting from our sources inside Google describes a broken, hollowed-out culture at Google where HR reigns supreme, and no one wants to speak up for fear of being noticed 👇
For me, the striking thing about so many of these images of rioters in the Capitol is that what they're doing - all of them - is creating content for social media.
At least in their minds, the true seat of power is not actually in that building. It's online.
@bariweiss
is my hometown newspaper, but I disagree with her on this: loss of trust in media is a positive development. We are now less likely to think that we know when we don’t…
One last vent: does anyone think that the Biden administration's endless performative condemnations of Israel - a fellow democracy, an ally, and a friend in need - played no part in Iranian calculations?
From the moment we declared our disastrous flight from Afghanistan an "extraordinary success," everything that followed - the wars, mass murders, missile attacks - was predictable...
"The intent of post-journalism was never to represent reality or inform the public but to arouse enough political fervor in readers that they wished to enter the paywall in support of the cause"

Well written, but I find this request astonishing. What we need is to find out who was right, who was wrong, for what reason and with what motive - otherwise, how will we do better the next time?
Why is everything so broken? And what broke it? I don't think anyone answers those questions better than
@mgurri
. Was thrilled to talk to him for

:
Hamas is fully funded and trained by Iran. The Biden admin just handed $6 billion to the Iranians. Don't think it's too harsh to say they have blood on their hands...
It's remarkable to me how conservatives and progressives, neither of which can think ahead from lunch to dinner, see a sinister "long game" being played by the other side...
The target achieved today is not the only target. It's also everyone who would want to seek such leadership roles in the future. The signal being sent is a very real and negative one. That is way more damaging than we can see right now. Remember who is playing the long game...
The Biden admin and the federal law enforcement and intel bureaucracies are deep in the business of managing media content. Not really sure when we voted for that...
A critical but fair review of The Revolt of the Public by Scott Alexander. He says reading the book is a pointless exercise in 2021 because everyone already knows everything in it.
Honestly, I wish that were true...
I have seen Milei described as "far right" (CNN, NYT), "rightwing populist" (AP), "libertarian" (Reuters), "far-right libertarian" (Guardian), "far-right outsider (BBC) - all these labels blend into a single screechy meaning...
It’s very simple.
If the RNC wants to FAFO, let them.
We will only vote for the nominee if the nominee is Donald Trump.
If they sabotage that, then GOP will lose in 2024 because over 30% of GOP voters are
#OnlyTrump
voters.
I’d love to watch the system burn.

"The internet is the single biggest threat to our democracy" is our version of "The printing press killed millions in the 30 Years' War."
Mind-boggling...
This is morally repulsive. The people who did this are morally repulsive. Apple managers are morally repulsive cowards. Antonio as a human being is worth a million of these twerps.
For shame....
Antonio García Martínez, a newly hired engineer on Apple’s ads team, is gone from Apple after employee backlash regarding sexist comments he made in his book Chaos Monkeys, company says. Employees have been incredibly angry about his hire and questioned Apple’s hiring practices.
"Every statue knocked down in anger offers proof, to someone, that change is possible. As for what remains behind, I imagine it’s exemplified by the empty pedestal: we are looking at nothing—a political void"

During the 2016 presidential race, the NYT stumbled into a new business model, entailing a pivot from a journalism of fact to a "post-journalism" of advocacy. How well did it work?
My latest.
Those who accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide" - sometimes before a shot had been fired - need to go deep into themselves and figure out what went wrong there...
The
@BBC
spells out the concrete evidence for Hamas abusing the Shifa Hospital for military purposes, building tunnels underneath it and abducting hostages into it on October 7.

"The populists have failed for the same reason that the street revolts have failed: Both are driven by a politics of negation. Both rage against the rule of the elites but lack a coherent alternative to put in its place."
Why would anyone fake data making US society look far more racist than it is - specially an academic researcher? I mean, what is the point of truth?
(This is when I feel REALLY old...)
For some reason, my old interview with

is getting a lot of hits.
I am reposting strictly as a warning of what can happen when two Cubans get together...
Every word in this argument against the Colorado decision is what I would have written, if I were eloquent enough. In my ideal future, some day not far off I'll vote for Peter Meijer for president...
US President Joe Biden is under investigation by his own Justice Department to determine whether his serial mishandling of classified information -- including Top Secret documents about Iran and Ukraine -- violated multiple federal criminal laws and should be prosecuted.

Cuba isn't what you think: the regime is a corrupt mafia; health/education are collapsing with the economy; 4% of the population have fled in the last 2 yrs; and the rest are venting mightily on the web. My latest...
Sometimes a regime that is way past its sell date deserves to be disrupted digitally. If the US govt can really offer wifi to ordinary Cubans, it must do so.

Q4: Who is trying to prevent future horrors and who has vowed to exterminate a whole people?
A: Do I really need to help you here?
Japan and Italy have attained the objective many can only dream of. Become reasonably rich, stop growing, reduce population b/c people do not want kids or migrants, and thus rapidly shrink its total GDP and reduce CO2 emissions.
Is the world falling apart? Yes. Is the current crowd in office largely responsible? Of course. Should we yield to anger or despair? Not really. There is always reason to hope.
My latest at The Free Press...
There has been a "herding effect" at work in the info sphere: we express more opinions about ever fewer subjects (Trump, Covid, race). Is it the algorithms? The culture? Both?
