So much of what we call reading comprehension failure is basically disguised vocabulary failure. Struggling kids don't need to be taught to "find the main idea", they need to be taught more words. And explicitly. Reading Marzano's book on vocab and I'm fascinated by this table.

Parents -find out if your child is being taught solely with this curriculum. If so, your child is in trouble. Only being taught with passages 18 pages long is really scary. Sixth graders can handle multiple full length age appropriate novels by 6th grade. They are dummying down
Wonders is a K-6 English Language Arts curriculum from McGraw-Hill. It includes zero “chapter” books in grades 3-6. Sixth graders read only passages and excerpts. The average text is 7.3 pages in length. The longest text is 18 pages.
