Mid Cheshire action group against #HS2 £107 billion Gravy Train for vested interests. CO2 +ve for 120 years Undeniably environmentally harmful according to DfT
Joined October 2013
This is from 2017. We've done 3 reports on the "challenging" geology #HS2 route through Mid Cheshire. Expert work by geologists internal and external. It's why the M6 avoided this area (notice how it bends?) not ok for 70mph motorway but 250mph train? https://t.co/bAFdZCaQzu

TerraConsult says the new route carries an “increased risk of subsidence” because the length of track on “higher-risk” surfaces has risen by more 3,000ft

There's no denying it now! @tmlbk discusses a new poll from @JLPartnersPolls which shows conclusively that the majority of Britons would scrap HS2 to fill the budget black hole.

@NotFarLeftAtAll Scrap #HS2 and save at least £5bn a year...as Amanda says, just imagine what you could do with that sort of cash.

WCML #railfreight capacity in the north Midlands is 4 trains per hour with a Stafford bypass in place ("Low Cost Option", DfT). Building the much more expensive #HS2 phase 2a doesn't increase freight capacity - it's still 4 goods trains per hour. #gbrail

'Staggering' fall in uk domestic flights, achieved without a single yard of #hs2 track in place
news.sky.com
Better and more frequent train services, higher flying taxes, concern about the environmental impact of flying, and changing work patterns - especially since COVID - have contributed to the change.

'Given the project underwent a reset five years ago, we remain sceptical that the department and HS2 Ltd will have any more capability to ensure costs are brought under control this time around,” the PAC report continued. ' Bob & no hope https://t.co/ZmNCYHPrDu

The chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has urged government to avoid repeating the mistakes made during the ongoing HS2 project.

Using labour input as a proxy, #HS2 phase 2a has a per-kilometre cost of about 69% of phase 1. Given what is now known about phase 1 costs, this means that phase 2a is likely to be *vastly* more expensive to construct than the last official estimate made about a decade ago.

Another bizarre moment from @greensignallers, who seem to think clearing some existing services out of the eastside of #Manchester Piccadilly (to allow intercity or #hs2 trains to access new long platforms) costs more than building HS2 phase2b. #QuiteExtraordinary

For example, this proposed #northernpowerhouserail "high speed" route between Liverpool and Manchester is ~42 miles with 3 intermediate stops, so each station is about 10.5 miles apart on average. Not a spacing suitable for 'high speed rail'.

Worth noting that St Pancras was saved from destruction largely due to the efforts of people who would nowadays be considered as ‘NIMBYs’. If the battle to save the station had been taking place today, John Betjeman & the other campaigners would have been roundly attacked &
St. Pancras station opened in 1868. When built, it was the largest station roof in the world without internal supports. In 1873, the Midland Grand Hotel, designed by English Gothic Revival architect George Gilbert Scott, was constructed on the station's façade. 📷 1895 - 1905.

Remote working makes sense if the objective is to boost the local economy, if it's about giving London commuters somewhere cheap to sleep that isn't going to do much for Birmingham.

All the evidence was that the largest share of economic benefit of #HS2 would flow to London. That's not a good thing for Birmingham. Here's Tom bragging about it. Let's use Birmingham to make London wealthier is not a win.
"Birmingham eyes ‘Zone 5’ status with long-awaited HS2" > good luck to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. If HS2 had made it the centre of England (as it should be) the prize would be even bigger. But 35 minutes to London is still a prize.
