Former hockey coach, frustrated golfer, political and history nerd. Just a kid from Sunny LA (Lackawanna that is) who grew up to be Erie County's Executive.
I've seen videos of the incident in front of Buffalo's City Hall in which an older protester appears to have been shoved by police, fell backwards and suffered a serious head injury. It sickens me. I've confirmed he is at ECMC in stable condition. My thoughts are with him now.
Nothing matters more than Damar Hamlin's life. I don't how the game can be continued. Even if they attempted to play there is no way his teammates could even think of anything other than him. Just terrible.
Further update on tonight's incident. I've confirmed the 75 year old man injured tonight is in serious but stable condition
@ECMCBuffalo
. While it is early, thankfully he is expected to recover. Simply put, the officers must be held responsible for their actions, not just fired.
A president who cared about the nation would come out of his bunker, take down the unnecessary fence around the White House, and try to bring our country together rather than further fan the flames of dissension. Unfortunately this president doesn't care about anyone but himself.
Buffalo protester shoved by Police could be an ANTIFA provocateur. 75 year old Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment.
@OANN
I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. Could be a set up?
Reminder to all employers: if your business is in a driving ban area or your employees are located in a driving ban area, it is illegal to make them come into work.
All reports I've received are everything went well with the fans at the Stadium today. Fans followed rules beforehand, no tailgating was observed, and just minor issues inside stadium. Thank you to all for doing a good job!
Well the protest has started. Not a huge turnout. Someone might want to tell the Ding Dong driving the truck with the US and confederate flags that the conf flag is flag of the those who were shooting AT the Union soldiers (but he or she probably already knows it). Back to work.
New update on the 75 year old man injured during last night's BPD incident: he is still in serious but stable condition at the Erie County Medical Center and, as was relayed to me by an ECMC official, he is "alert and oriented." That is better news. Let's hope he fully recovers.
I've been advised there just was a car protest in my neighborhood for about an hour in which protesters drove around honking their horns, waving signs and shouting about me and the governor. However, I wasn't even there to see it, so all they did was anger my neighbors. Good job.
It's ILLEGAL for employers to make employees violate a travel ban. If the employee OR work location is located in a travel ban area, employers can't make you come in unless you are truly essential/emergency personnel. Full service grocery store staff are considered essential.
Kyle Williams of
@buffalobills
exemplified the work ethic of our community and was a true role model to others. I just got off the phone with Kyle and informed him Sun. Dec. 30 will be Kyle Williams Day in Erie County.
#ThankYouKyle
for your commitment to the team and community.
I worked at Sears in 2 states. I met a lot of hardworking, smart people there & learned a lot. It is sad to see what its become after years of mismanagement & corporate raiding.
@ewarren
and
@AOC
do a great job in this video explaining what happened & what it means for America.
Before
@StevenMnuchin1
became Treasury Secretary, he was on the board of
@Sears
, where he helped gut the company and fire thousands of employees. Now,
@AOC
and I have some tough questions for him.
I won't be declaring a state of emergency regarding the possibility that legal asylum seekers may be housed in our county. I will not be issuing an emergency order prohibiting the housing of such persons. Not only is such an order illegal, it is morally repugnant. Full statement:
The NFL has made the right decision suspending the rest of the game tonight. Football is just a game. As I said earlier, nothing matters more than Damar Hamlin's life. All we can do now is say a prayer for him and hope for the best.
After a few hours of sleep I came downtown to help cleanup from last night's vandalism but many citizens had already cleaned up the damage. This family from Niagara County, with little Collier, came to help. Thank you and consider yourselves honorary Buffalonians for life!
Our community has faced a tremendous amount of adversity during the past 2 weeks — the Blizzard, the horrible fire, and last night's Damar Hamlin incident. If you need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to call our 24 hour crisis hotline: 716-834-3131. We are here to help.
For the record, credentialed media are considered essential during any situation. They may be out and report during any curfew/driving ban/etc. It is imperative a free press be allowed to perform it's important task for the public, though we ask they do so in a safe manner.
Please do not go outside to shovel your driveway during this storm. You can develop hypothermia and frostbite, those with cardiac conditions are also at severe risk. It is OK for snow to stay on your driveway for a day or two.
Until social media came along I would have never guessed how many people are combined climate scientists, epidemiologists, constitutional law experts, social scientists, and road engineers. It's amazing how much one person can know.
I really don't understand why anyone would vote for him. He disparages our war dead, POWS and wounded vets. He cares only for himself.
Please read this from
@TheAtlantic
We don't know why, but DPW and law enforcement are reporting people are attempting to drive this morning, violating the Driving Ban, and are getting stuck, adding to the problems.
Unless you are emergency personnel responding to the blizzard, do not drive. It's as simple as that.
I've spoken to
@MayorByronBrown
who confirmed it was members of the Buffalo Police Dept. involved in today's incident with the protester who was pushed and hit his head. He indicated actions are being taken against two officers by BPD, which actions will be announced soon.
I've seen videos of the incident in front of Buffalo's City Hall in which an older protester appears to have been shoved by police, fell backwards and suffered a serious head injury. It sickens me. I've confirmed he is at ECMC in stable condition. My thoughts are with him now.
That will go down as one of the worst losses in Bills history. Not for the score, as in a blowout loss, but in how they lost. Truly mind boggling and unacceptable in so many ways.
Thank you to the
@Wegmans
staff on Losson and Transit Roads in Cheektowaga for providing food and other supplies for our first responders and the team at the
@NWSBUFFALO
Office. It was much appreciated by people who have been on the front line for more than 48 hours straight.
When we rely on products made in China and other countries, we are at their mercy. Maybe we should think about making things here in our country and pay a few dollars more for products.
#MadeInAmerica
Worth thinking about, this crisis shows a real weakness in the supply chain.
Welcome to Buffalo
@BlueJays
. We are glad to host you this year and know we can do it a manner that protects our community and your team and the opposing teams.
For the first time in more than 100 years major league baseball is back in Buffalo with the
#BuffaloBlueJays
. :)
I think all of Buffalo aged 10 years watching those final 3 quarters, and it was definitely NOT a thing of beauty, but the Bills did win and move onward. Lots that will need to be improved upon if the ultimate goal is to be attained.
One final thing about today's march: everyone wore masks. It was an impressive site to see thousands coming out to demand an end to injustice and knowing they all cared enough to wear a mask to protect themselves and others. That's what a caring community does. Thanks to all!
It's a Saturday morning Social Distancing Lesson courtesy of 1980s WWF wrestling figures. The top picture of a Royal Rumble is NOT proper social distancing. The bottom one of Andre the Giant and
@HulkHogan
is proper social distancing. Thanks Hulkster for the lesson and RIP Andre!
I was shocked to learn today that
@Tesla
fired 30 employees at its Buffalo facility after
@united_tesla
began organizing efforts there. This is unacceptable. The firings are wrong and Tesla must immediately reinstate the workers to their positions.
My full statement is below:
A president spoke today about the death of George Floyd, the protests and violence we are witnessing, and what we must do, especially young activists, to move onward.
Not the current president, but the most recent one.
I wrote out some thoughts on how to make this moment a real turning point to bring about real change––and pulled together some resources to help young activists sustain the momentum by channeling their energy into concrete action.
As I said earlier today in response to whether the driving ban should have been instituted earlier, I do not know if it would have changed anything but it was my decision and I bear full responsibility.
As JFK said, "victory has a hundred fathers, but defeat is an orphan."
I'm more than disappointed in New Era. Last year it closed its Derby facility, laying off 200 employees, and now announced it's laying off 117 employees at its Buffalo office. Its name should no longer be on the stadium owned by the people of Erie County.
For those of you who are wondering why there is a driving/travel ban across most of Erie County, check out this video I just shot in the Town of Cheektowaga off of Walden Avenue. It's REALLY bad. This why we did not want thousands of vehicles trying to get to a football game.
Hottest gift in Buffalo this Christmas week will be Bills AFC East Champion sweatshirts. Just like the old days. Great job by the entire
@BuffaloBills
organization to build this team. Best team we've had since the Super Bowl years.
#GoBills
#AFCEastChamps
Hi from DPW1 at the corner of Abbott Road and Southwestern Blvd. You should be able to see a stadium there but you can't because it's terrible out with snow falling at a rate of at least 3" an hour and winds still whipping. This is why there is still a driving ban. Be safe!
In the areas of the City of Buffalo, Cheektowaga Amherst, Lancaster, Williamsville, there are no emergency services available right now. We are continuing to do everything we can.
Our Central Police Services Dept. reports protest is over.
@BPDAlerts
estimates about 150 cars were involved.
To those who think I have a problem with a protest, I don't (though this one is premature), but I do have issue with protester with confederate flag. Wrong in every way.
Please keep in mind, Erie County did not approve or sanction the Bills driving from Rochester during the ban, nor did
@ECSONY1
provide any escort to them.
Just off the phone with
@ErieCountyESU
Dep. Commissioner Butcher who confirmed quake was felt as far north as Niagara Falls and south to Orchard Park from initial reports. It felt like a car hit my house in Buffalo. I jumped out of bed.
As of 7 AM, the Driving Ban will STILL be in effect for the cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna and the Towns of Amherst, Cheektowaga, Clarence, Evans, Hamburg, Orchard Park and West Seneca. It is lifted for all other towns as of 7 AM.
The Thruway and NYS route are still closed.
How does
@POTUS
announce he is holding a press conference, issue a statement on China and Hong Kong, and then walk away and not even mention the death of George Floyd and what's happened in Minneapolis since then?
I was shocked. All of America is talking about it but him.
I don't care what political party you are in, if you are an American you should be disgusted to see the White House turned into a campaign prop. It proves once again
@realDonaldTrump
cares nothing for the institution of the presidency or our laws, he only cares about himself.
To all who voted for Trump in 2016 thinking "he can't really be as bad as it seems" I guess you were partially correct because he turned out to be so much worse. The important question now is are you still going to vote for him in 2020?
Our President is openly working to help a deadly virus spread that has killed 120,000.
Russia is putting bounties on the heads of American soldiers and he seems ok with it.
He’s distributing white power videos.
And that’s just the last 48 HOURS.
BINGO! Well said
@NYGovCuomo
. What kind of society have we become when supposed leaders start weighing the cost on our economy versus the number of people who may die? No one is expendable: not my parents, other seniors nor the child with immunosuppression issues. No one.
Cuomo: "My mother's not expendable. Your mother's not expendable. ... We're not going to accept a premise that human life is disposable, and we're not going to put a dollar figure on human life."
#coronavirus
This should not have happened and is unacceptable. The careers and lives of players, coaches, staff, and security at the arena and hotel where the Devils stayed were put at risk by the NHL to play 2 games when it appears the Devils had an outbreak. The Sabres should be furious.
Our community is hurting tonight but Buffalo is known as the City of Good Neighbors and we saw that in action throughout the day from law enforcement, first responders, clergy, mental health counselors and citizens volunteering to help. Thank you to all for your efforts. ❤️
Just because we have to practice safe social distancing doesn't mean we have to disconnect from each other. So while I don't think I will be playing my guitar at parties any time soon, here is a song for my friends. I hope you enjoy it.
After watching the president's statement this is the most measured thought that came into my mind, "being president doesn't change who you are; it reveals who you are." - Michelle Obama
Our people, our country, and our democracy are so much better than this one man.
Good news: my dad Charles was discharged from the hospital today and is home now! He is happy and doing well, and we are all happy. Thank you all for your well wishes. Mark
Lots of people wondering why I wasn't part of today's Facebook Live briefing. I am not sick. I was in the office but very tired. So I left early, slept a bit and then did much needed yard work to No. Buffalo Command Center. I needed it,don't want to burn out. Yard looks good now.
Thank you to all the persons and business owners who have contacted my office commending us for reinstituting the mask mandate during this COVID-19 Delta Variant surge. While there is a vocal minority who object to it, the vast majority of residents support these safety measures.
This game is OVER! Heading to the AFC Championship! Great game by all in windy conditions. Even the
#BillsMafia
guys with no shirts on are wearing masks! Great job all around.
4 years ago, prior to President Trump's inauguration, I remember people who supported him saying "Don't worry, what harm can he do?".
Since then we have witnessed the damage to our nation he could do, culminating with today's treasonous attempted coup d'etat. It is horrible.
Team is on fire and the aerial shots of Buffalo look awesome. Even had some Rick James playing on the cut away to a commercial. Great night so far!
#Bills
Sadly, I have to report our
@ECDOH
has confirmed another death: a 22 year old female who was found in a car in Buffalo. There are now 13 confirmed deaths from the Blizzard. Unfortunately, we do expect that number to grow.
The failure by the GOP to extend the $600 unemployment benefit is based on its long-standing false premise that the unemployed are lazy and don't want to work. It also ignores the facts that 30 million were laid off and the aid will help keep our economy from crashing further.
Congratulations to
@Indiawaltonbflo
on her historic victory in yesterday's democratic primary and her presumptive election as Buffalo's next mayor, and first woman mayor. I look forward to working with her to create the best City of Buffalo possible for our mutual constituents.
I know a thing or 2 about the new Bills stadium deal. Governor
@KathyHochul
is right, the deal we negotiated was a good one for WNYers and NYers. Buffalo is not NYC. The team would have moved without our investment. It's the ONLY NFL team in NY and they are staying.
#NYGovDebate
As I noted during my briefing today, while I'm like others and want to reopen as soon as we can, we have to do it in a safe manner.
Economies recover, dead people don't. The public's health will always be the overriding factor.
If we meet the metrics we reopen. Simple as that.
Honored to join Senate Majority Leader
@SenSchumer
today at Manna's Restaurant in Buffalo to thank him for his dogged determination in getting the
#AmericanRescuePlan
passed. All facets of our nation will benefit from it because it will save our local and national economies.
I don't care what political party you are in, if you believe school shootings, like the Parkland massacre, were faked, a plane did not hit the Pentagon on Sept. 11, and congressional leaders should be shot, you simply should not be in Congress.
I also have to apologize to the neighbors on the street where I used to live more than a decade ago because I've been informed some protesters drove over there and started protesting. A neighbor came out and told them I hadn't lived there in more than 10 years and then they left.
Today will go down as one of the darkest days in US history. The president fomented his supporters to take action and now they are engaging in a treasonous coup d'etat inside the Capitol to stop Congress from performing its constitutional duty of confirming Joe Biden's election.
That hurts. Hurts for every Bills fan. We are all sick of wait until next year. I feel really bad for our older seniors who were hoping this was the year they finally see the Bills win the big one. Having a "wide right" miss on a kick is just an extra kick in the you know where.
We have been told that the White House disaster declaration will be issued within 24 hours.
This will help NYS, Erie County, and municipalities recoup the extensive costs associated with this storm event.
@GovKathyHochul
and I are incredibly thankful for their support.
Having been in the Emergency Ops Center for days, I'm just learning about the many selfless sacrifices and actions of our neighbors to save others. One is Jay Withey, who saved more than 20 by breaking into a school in Cheektowaga. THANK YOU "Merry Christmas Jay!!"
Police have identified 27-year-old Jay Withey as the man credited with saving the lives of two dozen people during the deadly Buffalo storm.
Now, "Merry Christmas Jay" is speaking out.
This is pure malarkey. If he truly cared about out employees' health he would
#WearAMask
in the Rath Building and he hasn't repeatedly. Last week we rode up an elevator together and he was maskless. I told him if he didn't wear a mask he wouldn't be allowed in the building again.
I fight for the health and safety of our hard working union employees. The Rath Building isn’t ready to safely bring workers back. No nurses checking temps. Can’t fit 4 in elevator to safely social distance. A remote workforce is right. Listen here:
Very proud of our democratic team in Erie County. The GOP targeted Erie County heavily to beat our governor and assembly and Senate delagation here. We won EVERY one of those races, proving Erie County is solidly democratic.
For the record, and in regards to the below tweet from the comptroller, I didn't play hockey with my usual mates. I got on the ice about an half-hour before they did to skate and shoot by myself and then left. Nothing wrong with that, though being followed is a bit creepy.
To all Erie County employees: if you have been at home we need your help relieving your colleagues who have been working for 3 days straight. We have rides to get you where you need to be. If your supervisor calls you, we need you to help relieve workers.
Thread: To those who say I should offer my thoughts, prayers or condolences following the Nashville Shooting, I'm sick and tired of offering condolences. I'm disgusted that 6 more families are destroyed because of a mass shooting, including the murder of 3 beautiful children. 1/
In regards to opening up Buffalo's streets, our
@ErieCountyDPW
,
@NYSDOT
and Bflo have major resources out but the snow is NOT plowable. It must be scooped up and put into dump trucks, then dumped elsewhere.
It will take approximately 2 days to open up 1 lane on every city street.
The rest of world now knows the story of what happened to Kim Pegula, how she was saved by her daughter Kelly and what the family has endured this past year. Well done by
@kpegula
for saving your mom's life and
@JLPegula
for your incredible story.
I've walked a lot of parades but today's Buffalo
#Pride
Parade might be the most attended parade and with the largest number of floats/participants I ever saw. It was gigantic!!
Well done
#Buffalo
, Erie County and WNY!
#LoveIsLove
#Pride2022
Very disappointing to hear someone shout
@POTUS
it was his "fault" for deaths caused by fentanyl. Thousands of Americans died from a fentanyl overdose during Trump administration. It wasn't Trump's fault then. This is a non-partisan issue we must solve.
#StateOfTheUnionAddress
There have been a number of protests throughout the day in Buffalo, including ongoing ones in Niagara Square and MLK Park. As has been reported to me all have been peaceful.
We are here with
@PegulaSE
@BuffaloBills
&
@BuffaloSabres
to jointly announce all guests 12 and over will be required to provide proof of at least 1 dose of vaccine at any event starting with the 9/26 Bills game until 10/31 - after that you must be fully vaccinated to enter
This is Route 33, a/k/a the Kensington Expressway. It is one of the major entrance and exit points into Buffalo in the northern part of the city. This is why it is closed and is taking longer to remove than normal.
This is not normal for WNY. It was a once in a generation storm.
This is the problem we have been dealing with across the Southtowns. This is Abbott Road and Lake Avenue in Hamburg/OP. Tractor Trailers that are rarely on this road tried to get around the Thruway closure and got stuck. This is why we can't get to secondary roads/neighborhoods.
