Do you really want reporters regurgitating only what the government has approved them to say? That's called state-run news. The founders enshrined press freedoms in the 1st Amendment for a reason: a robust, critical & free press informs the People: the ultimate check & balance.

Hochul vetoed this bill. It would've enacted more-stringent deadlines for fulfilling open-records requests. As @NickReisman noted, it was one of a handful of bills she vetoed today -- all sponsored by Sen Skoufis, who ratcheted up his criticism of Hochul this year.

For all the Freedom of Information nerds out there: The NYS Legislature approved a bill that would, in theory, place firmer deadlines on producing records in response to FOIL requests. It's off to Gov. Hochul for her signature or veto.

If you’re a national reporter who is reporting on Nexstar’s decision today and you’re not mentioning the fact that in two weeks the FCC will be voting on ownership rules that will directly impact Nexstar’s proposed purchase of Tegna …you need to do a little more homework.

I'll be interested to see the outcome of the appeal on this case. It's one thing to talk about transparency. It's another thing to actually be transparent.
