Spotted this little American kestrel soaking up the sunrise above the fog on Mt. Rincon earlier this week. Kestrels are one of the most commonly seen birds of prey on the ALERTCalifornia network.

This @NOAASatellites view of central California shows the extent of dense fog over the area this evening. The sudden transition from red to pink is showing sunset, with the brighter colors in the image showing the expanse of the fog. #CAwx

People don't always know how bad the air is. Your lungs do. The microscopic particles pass deep into your lungs, pass the blood-gas barrier and lodge in your organs -- including your heart. Early mortality due to this pollution is a big deal in this valley.

Dirty-air cringe time: My granddaughter's soccer game was just called off at Bullard High School in Fresno. Stay inside if you can. And, please, don't burn wood in an open fireplace tonight. https://t.co/uLGPW7150k

You can see where the dirty air is the worst around the Fresno-Clovis area. Tiny specks of dust, chemicals and soot are building in the air every day now. PM-2.5 is the most deadly air pollutant being regulated. Keep your eye on this here: https://t.co/7wpCQwRhuA

The last 12 months of air quality in the central San Joaquin Valley have been better than in the past. Not so much now ... stable weather and fog are creating a PM-2.5 problem for all of us. https://t.co/QbEM2P9IL5

Well, it's now official (per NOAA): Dec (and Nov-Dec) 2025 were the warmest such periods on record for Western U.S. (and also for most individual Western states). It has been an extraordinarily sustained period of winter warmth, and this eerily balmy winter continues into Jan.

For years, the water table has been dropping beneath thousands of acres of Arizona farmland where a Saudi dairy company has been allowed to pump unlimited amounts of groundwater to grow hay. Now, the state is finally imposing limits. https://t.co/0tTQ07rBtN

Arizona's governor says the state will start limiting groundwater pumping in an area where a Saudi farm grows hay and aquifer levels are dropping.

For the first time in 25 years, all of California is completely drought free! Over the past 90 days, precipitation has been up to 600% of normal in spots. The Sierra Nevada, which accounts for ~30% of the state’s water supply, has received several hundred inches of snow. #CAwx

Stop considering lives saved by limiting air pollution? That hits hard in the San Joaquin Valley, which is still among worst air basins in the country. Explore this gift article from The New York Times. You can read it for free without a subscription.

In a reversal, the agency plans to calculate only the cost to industry when setting pollution limits, and not the monetary value of saving human lives, documents show.
