We will likely hit G4-levels (Kp 8) putting us at the "severe" storm level. Hp60 has reached even higher. But no worries, this intensity will subside as we exit the sheath region and solar wind density drops. Magnetic field is flipping now too so all is good. Enjoy the #aurora !

The first in a succession of SIX #solarstorms is hitting Earth now! NASA/CCMC's Mary Aronne got this run spot on (see graphic). NOAA/SWPC has the other five hitting in machine-gun fashion starting on the 18th. Magnetic field is northward thus far but expect #aurora to build soon!

More observations of the #SolarPolarVortex reveal it took roughly 8 hours for material to circumnavigate the pole at approximately 60° latitude. This means an upper bound in the estimation of horizontal wind speed in this event is 96 kilometers per second or 60 miles a second!

Some people are attributing cell network outages (AT&T, Verizon) in the U.S to last night’s X-class #SolarFlare . However, flares only cause radio degradation on the *dayside* of the Earth. As you can see below, the U.S was not affected by the event. So it’s just a coincidence!

Yes! This is the expected big filament #solarstorm and it has arrived early! It's a fast mover and stronger than expected. This means the potential for red or rainbow #aurora down to mid-latitudes is high. If the field turns strongly southward, we could see a G3 from this one.

Today's X-1.1 flare is likely only a beginning for this complex set of sibling regions. 2993 & 2994 are already visible. Soon one more (old region 2976) will join them! Expect dayside amateur #radio blackouts, #GPS reception issues & later this week, a potential for #solarstorms !

At long last we have a #solarstorm coming (somewhat) towards Earth. The NASA prediction model run indicates we could have a glancing blow by early February 7. Mild effects to #GPS reception & amateur #radio are expected, but chances for #aurora increase by late Monday evening.

Quite possible. Recent X-flares from Region 3590 are showing radio bursts beyond 12 GHz. This could degrade radio signals way beyond the L-band (e.g. those used by GPS, satellite phones), impacting signals clear up to the X and Ku bands (e.g. those used by Starlink and NASA).
