I just puked in a trashcan in the middle of an experiment with gloves on & pipette in hand without pause (7mo pregnant, not sick). So to any of you losers who think women aren't tough enough for science careers I invite you to come hold my hair back while I feed my cells
🎉 Congrats to Marissa Scavuzzo (
@marissascavuzzo
), one of our
#HannaGrayFellows
, who has won the 2023 Eppendorf &
@ScienceMagazine
Prize for Neurobiology for her research in how glial cells in the intestine's nervous system operate! Learn more:
I got transfected this morning!
As a developmental biologist who has studied the negative impacts of maternal infection on offspring, getting vaccinated gives me comfort knowing our unborn babe has protection.
If you are pregnant & have q's about the vaccine, feel free to ask!
Did I learn super resolution microscopy yesterday? Yes.
Am I in my 30s? Yes.
Did I send pictures of nuclear proteins to my (non-scientist) mom and dad today from the scope, hoping they’ll hang them on their fridge next to my niece and nephews drawings? ....Maybe..

studies the nervous system – the one inside your gut. Her goal: to understand the many functions of glia cells in a healthy gut and then figure out how they respond to genetic, environmental, & dietary changes.
Mentor:
@TesarLab
,
@CWRU
The incredible mentors I’ve had over the years have inspired me and given me support to get where I am today; the HGF puts me in the position to be that mentor to the next generation of scientists. I'm so thankful to be part of the HHMI community and for this amazing opportunity!
Today, HHMI is proud to announce the new
#HannaGrayFellows
, 21 early career researchers who are taking on some of the biggest challenges in the life sciences.
One of my most unreasonable pet peeves is when someone says “genes” when they mean “transcripts”
Your RNAseq is showing a change in transcript number, not a change in gene copy number.
My first undergrad, Aakash Shah, who helped me set up so many things in the lab is now in medical school and got his white coat yesterday. He is brilliant and extremely accomplished but I am most impressed by his exemplary character. I am so proud!
The 2023
@HHMINEWS
Hanna H Gray Retreat was magical!
I met colleagues who quickly became collaborators and friends.
So thankful for everyone in this community, especially the other HGFs, our scientific officers, and the incredible HHMI staff that organized the meeting
What an amazing weekend at
@AAAS
/
@ScienceMagazine
in DC talking about 💩!
I am nothing without the people around me. So grateful for all of them, for the Eppendorf & Science community, and for new connections!
First full day back at work post maternity leave so instead of staring at my daughter for ~9hrs at home I will stare at pictures of my daughter for ~9hrs in lab. Baby steps
Have you ever wondered how food moves through our small intestine without control from the brain?
In our new preprint (link below), we found evidence of multiple functionally specialized subtypes of enteric glia with distinct molecular, morphological, & spatial identities
🧵1/7
I don’t know what’s more surreal, seeing my face in the NYT or seeing my face between the amazing
@ValeriaMReyes
and
@zurisullivan
. I can’t believe I’m part of this group of stellar scientists!
Apply now, applications are open!
@HHMINEWS
Omg things are so crazy in lab right now that I have pulled up a cart and a chair as “bench extensions” to have more room for samples 👩🏻🔬 🐭
My feet hurt but I’ve never been more excited about my science
We have hit the toddler stage - my daughter claws at my legs crying and screaming every morning when I try to leave for work then throws herself dramatically to the ground.
Any advice on making leaving each day less miserable (for both of us)?
@Momademia
I can do microdissections to isolate subtypes of cells from early embryonic mice without a problem but I can’t clip my newborns fingernails without one or both of us crying
@ivancedric_a
mTOR is a protein at the top of a signaling cascade that interacts* way too much w/proteins lower in the cascade. mTOR is shielded by proteins higher in the cascade and is inside a protective cell membrane. It stands for “man Terrorizing Other Researchers”

“What are your plans for summer break?”
“A PhD is like a regular job, there isn’t a summer break”
“Oh ok. Well, make sure you do something fun for spring break then!”
Omg my lab mates are the BEST!!!!!
Had something today that I’m really excited/nervous about and means a lot to me, and they showed out in support when I had finished 🎉
couldn’t ask for a better lab to be a part of.
Then: “During maternity leave I’m going to work on my paper, do some computational work, get back to painting, get a few new art pieces done, and exercise! That will feel like a win.”
Now: “I left the house today with my shirt all the way on! This feels like a win.”
6 months into this immersive dev bio project and now Lillo the fetus can hear outside the womb, so she will be listening in to every scientific talk I attend
(i.e. don’t be alarmed if you see a headphone in my shirt, it’s just my daughter learning early)
The Tesar lab is so awesome! Surprise baby shower today (outdoors & fully vaccinated) with fun games and treats, including baby food tasting!
They even made us a special “gender is a construct” stick to beat up a gender reveal piñata full of chocolate with 😂
I’ve had three massive experiments fail repeatedly for the last couple of months and in the past week literally all three worked beautifully.
It’s weeks like these that make me fall in love with science over and over again! Failures make the successes that much sweeter.
Today I am doing an experiment using a new technique that I developed that nobody else in the world has yet been able to do, to look at something nobody in the world has been able to look at (or thought to look at), to hopefully/basically pioneer a new field.
Happy Tuesday! 🎉
Four years ago I defended my PhD surrounded by friends, colleagues, and family. I had a blazer on but I was so nervous I sweat through the armpits and had to take it off afterwards. It somehow both feels like yesterday and a million years ago
*goes into lab at 10am and leaves at 7:30pm*
“I’m going to start going in earlier so I don’t stay so late!”
*goes into lab at 7am and leave at 7:30pm*

This morning I woke up to the sound of my husband gently singing me love songs. But then I rolled over and saw he had his back turned to me and was singing them to Omar the cat 😒
What an incredible cohort of scientists and humans!!!!
It is so amazing that
@HHMINEWS
is funding the rare combo of scientific excellence and healthy, inclusive labs. What a great model for us all. The future of academic science is looking better every day and I love to see it

#FHScholars
My husband (
@AndrewScavuzza
) runs a science education nonprofit (
@riseupneo
) and one of the student groups proposed cockroaches as their model organism and now we have over 15 Madagascar hissing cockroaches locked in our 2y/os closet to keep them from our cats and 2y/o send help

4 days, 4 nights, and 4 months pregnant backpacking through the mountains in the desert with my BFF (who carried all the heavy stuff, my deceiving backpack was full of sleeping bags) 🌵
Have a full Saturday of important experiments in the lab and of course nothing has worked
BUT
I just realized that I am due to give birth next week which means next time this happens I can do my favorite post experimental failure tradition and enjoy a glass of bourbon 👩🔬😭🥃
I'm sick of being told that I don't matter as much, I have less value, I'm not as important. Whether it is in large moves like today or in small (potentially subconscious) actions, it happens every. single. day.
For my birthday my husband got my first 3D confocal image (upper embryonic mouse GI tract immunostained) custom printed onto two canvases 😭 best spouse ever
Had such a wonderful time visiting
@UCLA_BRI
. Thank you to the organizers of the SYNCS series for the invitation to share my work and for the opportunity to meet with so many leaders in the field!
🎉 Congrats to
@marissascavuzzo
, winner of the 2023 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology for research revealing how specialized glial cells embedded within the walls of the gut, which operate independently of the brain, fine-tune intestinal function.
It’s the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! To celebrate, I’m doing science all day 🤦🏻♀️
There are so many stellar women scientists, here are a couple of them to follow and watch out for 🧵:
I just spent twenty minutes googling “dark freckles on newborns face” worrying about sun exposure to then wipe the freckles and realize they weren’t freckles, they were coffee spots. I spilled iced coffee on her.
🤦🏻♀️
We
@TesarLab
are excited to be selected as a host lab for the
@SimonsFdn
@SFARIorg
SURFiN Program!
ATTENTION: Undergrad students in the Cleveland area from historically excluded groups (including women): apply to join our lab studying glia in ASD
Please RT/help spread the word
My graduation gift to my advisor was a painting of a light sheet image I took, but with the nucleotide sequence of the targets
Alexa Fluor 555 is mucin, 488 is insulin1, 405 is amylase
My parents grew up in low income houses and worked crazy hours to give their kids a different financial situation than they had. When I was young my mom would say she wanted me to be an orthodontist-a stable low stress job with high pay & regular hours. So anyways, I’m a postdoc
Applications are OPEN through December 1, 2021 for the next round of the
#HannaGrayFellows
Program. Learn more and please spread the word! More info here:
Ugh dealing with an OBNOXIOUSLY good differentiation… it’s going to take me 400 years to split all of these monsters!!!! Currently going from 1 to 15, they all look beautiful so no man left behind. Been an hour and only a fraction done.
..that data gonna look good tho 🙊 👀
@PsychedSN
@emmafriedmann
Someone I went to grad school with was in the clinical trials and got Pfizer, two months later she got pregnant with triplets 😅 (all born now and healthy)
maybe the vaccine impregnates people

a lot of successful PIs forget the names of new lab members or even people who have been in their lab for years... my successful PI knows the name of every lab member, spouse, significant other, their children, and their pets. Be like my PI
I signed up for a 100 mile relay with some friends (my leg is ~13mi) but then got busy and haven’t ran in months. I have the Lord of the Rings soundtrack queued up, if Frodo could make it to Mordor on those tiny hobbit legs then my drumsticks will make it to the finish line
Growing a fetus:

I don’t get why people are so dramatic, this is pretty easy
> 36 weeks and 3 days:
Death lies on me like an untimely frost;
O proud death,
What feast is toward in thine eternal cell
Here I lie in cold obstruction and rot
Thankful to have the opportunity to hear about all the amazing work at the
@HHMINEWS
Cell and Developmental Biology meeting, and also very thankful for
@angiescav
who watched my sweet 6wk old so I could focus on the science (photo credit to her/ 🥛 time)
I’ve been following Gastronauts for a few years and it’s an honor to now officially be part of the gang
What an innovative and inclusive group of gut-brain scientists! Blown away by the work being done in & out of the lab. Thank you
@gutbrainmatters
for building this community
Had a fun morning with
@riseupneo
holding a free community science event. These kids are our future and it sure is looking bright! 🌞
So grateful for
@harborandbridge
for hosting us and all the Rise Up Teaching Fellows who did an amazing job guiding kids in experiments.
Got this email this morning 😂 I forgot that I applied to the astronaut training program as a backup plan to securing a tenure-track faculty position at a med school or research institute
My backup plan says a lot about the academic job market 😬
#givemealabortakemetothemoon
I am holding my screaming naked 1yo while my temporarily disabled husband fishes her poop out of the tub (while we all have the flu), but I cant stop thinking about how grateful I am.
@KateLetai
you are an actual research angel who came to my rescue and saved my mouse work 1/2
@TesarLab
wins the Landis Award for outstanding mentorship!
I couldn't think of anyone who embodies what this award represents better. So glad to call the lab home for my postdoc!
Got my negative rapid test result, masked up, and headed to Montauk!
Will be the first time I’ve ever left these two and longest time away from my baby, but I couldn’t miss the opportunity to soak in all the groundbreaking research going on at the
@nyscf
innovator retreat
Presented at my last
@nyscf
innovators retreat today as a Druckenmiller Fellow, such an honor to be a part of such a remarkable community and so thankful for their support!
Can’t wait to crash the in person retreat next year as an alumni 😝
Excited to share that I am now officially a New York Stem Cell Foundation - Druckenmiller Fellow! I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this great community.
trying to have serious data conversations with
@ArturGev97
via Zoom and get work done on a Friday evening while Omar the 30lb monster cat who takes residence in our home is in full weekend mode
The Tesar Lab is expanding (into a new organ). Thanks to funding from
@SFARIorg
we are investigating how glial cells in the enteric nervous system (in your gut) contribute to gastrointestinal issues in neurological diseases.
#IntestinalOrganoids
@cphbioconf
has been a scientific utopia. A treat to be here in Favrholm to hear about all the cutting edge work by the leading labs in this field and to gain feedback and advice on my own (very early) work in this arena.
Anyone who says
#womeninscience
don’t face more challenges has obviously never done a dozen mouse intestinal dissections in one sitting during their first trimester 🤢
Disappointed I can’t handle our Halloween candy this year! No, not because of COVID, we’re launching candy at kids from the front porch to the sidewalk using tongs. Because I’m a bucket of fried chicken and buckets of fried chicken don’t have arms
I have a great writing regimen to share. First, map out your ideas by pen & paper. Next, quickly eat your body weight in food. Follow this by drinking 2 carafes of spiked coffee. Sulk for 1hr, then take 100 photos of your pet. From 2am to 7am your writing will flourish. Enjoy!
