Yes, you can wear an N95 and still get COVID, especially with BA.5. But that doesn't mean masks don't work. You can also die in a car crash wearing a seat belt, but that doesn't mean seat belts don't work. Masks reduce the odds of infection. Be probabilistic, not fatalistic.

Academics study interesting and important things. But we often lack training in how to effectively engage an audience. I hope my advice helps. Because if we want to maximize the impact of our scientific endeavors, we need to keep working on our public speaking skills.

I've been making comics with Auckland kids about how they've participated in Covid-19 public health measures for a new study. Children have been pretty invisible during this pandemic, so I thought I'd start sharing their stories to remind us they're 20% of the team of 5 million.

God bless the students who nod at you while you lecture in class. Most of them look at you like you're a like dead fish, but there is always one, nodding along. A hero.

NIWA air quality scientists have been working with @EducationGovtNZ on advice to keep air safe inside classrooms. This video, made with @fphcare using a CO2 camera, shows what happens to our breath when weβre indoors, with & without masks and with high & low ventilation.

Before 2020, I never wore a mask during flu-season. This is NOT bc I had done an analysis and decided that preventable flu deaths were "acceptable". It is because I didn't know, and if I had known, I would have started wearing a mask during flu season ages ago...

On request, here's a thread version of the mask use flow chart. 1st. Do you have a P2/N95 respirator which fits your face snugly? If so, wear it. After use, set aside for 4 or more days, then reuse.
