Yes, you can wear an N95 and still get COVID, especially with BA.5. But that doesn't mean masks don't work. You can also die in a car crash wearing a seat belt, but that doesn't mean seat belts don't work. Masks reduce the odds of infection. Be probabilistic, not fatalistic.

Academics study interesting and important things. But we often lack training in how to effectively engage an audience. I hope my advice helps. Because if we want to maximize the impact of our scientific endeavors, we need to keep working on our public speaking skills.

I've been making comics with Auckland kids about how they've participated in Covid-19 public health measures for a new study. Children have been pretty invisible during this pandemic, so I thought I'd start sharing their stories to remind us they're 20% of the team of 5 million.

Before 2020, I never wore a mask during flu-season. This is NOT bc I had done an analysis and decided that preventable flu deaths were "acceptable". It is because I didn't know, and if I had known, I would have started wearing a mask during flu season ages ago...
