A great example of community during covid: @Isle20Shop now has over 300 island businesses from Arran to Unst and everywhere in between. There's a huge range of crafts, from soap to glass (to modern Harris Tweed bags...) and your support really helps folk get through.

I've been spending a lot of time exploring human habitation of the Flow Country World Heritage Site this winter. There's 185 shieling sites (mapped) across the area and I've used historical records to find a total of 586 shieling huts. This is only recorded shieling huts.

1/2 I have some thoughts on this "lost village", it wasn't lost or abandoned but cleared of its people, culture, & knowledge. Nestled on the coast of Loch Eynort people were removed by The MacAskills, this event is recorded.. @Forestry_UK
Talk about an incredible find😲 https://t.co/aLDKN36p3N

Carloway FC on Lewis have faced many challenges since 1933, as recorded in a new book by Eachainn and Graeme Miller. But, backed by local stalwarts, former Scotland legend, Ronnie Mackinnon, and visits from Gothenburg Greats, they've survived and thrived! https://t.co/UbQhWpMyDu

If you don’t fix the housing – if you don’t go all in on supporting the vernacular language and culture – then you will drain every last bit of generational crofting and fishing expertise out of the Highlands and Islands. It's me in the @ScotNational 👇

LOOKING back at old photos, the croft seems to be such a hive of activity. Black and white photos show groups of smiling people sitting in the sun,…

I was working on a piece about World Gaelic Week - which is being held in February - and talked to several people about the future of the language. I love the quotes from Donald S Murray and Pat Macleod! #Gaelic #ScottishLanguages

A Gaelic version of Scrabble has been launched and the language can be learned on Duolingo - but is there hope for its survival?

"Experts have recreated the oldest-known piece of tartan ever found, which was discovered in a peat bog after being buried for centuries." The Glen Affric Tartan (1500-1600 AD): The green dye is believed to be made from woad or indigo the other colours - I'll need to read more!
Rather like this new (very very old) tartan design. I thought it would be garish when I heard it described, but it’s nice! https://t.co/e38YcNPgAp

Getting more crofts into the hands of local people... being clear about what is and is not acceptable use of land are all levers we have at our disposal when it comes to addressing depopulation, the housing crisis and imminent death of a minority culture. 🧵
